Today’s Purpose
The district’s technical assistance meeting provides applicants with guidelines for completing and submitting the FLDOE charter application to Brevard Public Schools.
Legislation
•See attached sheet for specific statutes and laws that are applicable to charter schools.
New Legislation
•Pay attention to this year’s legislative platforms.
•You are responsible for any that are applicable to charter schools.
Charter Application Due Date
Brevard Public Schools accepts charter school applications received on or before 4:00 p.m. on February 1st
◦ To be opened at the beginning 2019-2020 school year
◦ Charter applicant may defer opening per statute
Application Requirements
•The district utilizes the state’s application template, AND
•Requires additional information as outlined in the “Application Instructions” which is located on our website under the “Links” button on the left.

DOE Evaluation Instrument
•Brevard Public Schools will review all applications utilizing an evaluation instrument developed by the Department of Education
Application Review Time•School Board must vote approve or deny an application no later than 60 calendar days after the application is received.
•Brevard Public Schools asks each applicant for an extension of time to review their application.
•Written 30 day extension letter of agreement upon application submission.
Communication Via Electronic Mail
A letter outlining the District’s intent to communicate electronically is included as part of Brevard Public Schools charter application.
◦ Letter requires signature acknowledging use of electronic communication
◦ Submit letter with charter application by February 1st
◦ Important to provide accurate electronic mail contact information
2019-20 Application Timeline
• November 13 – Technical Assistance meeting for interested applicants
• February 1 – 4:00 pm – Deadline for Submission of Applications
• February 22 – Time TBD – Interview Applicants
Application Due DateThe Application Packet Must be Delivered to the Division of Equity Innovation and Choice
By 4:00 p.m. on February 1st - No Exceptions
1. Submit one (1) online, electronic copy via Charter-Tools (www.Charter-Tools.com)
2. Submit Five (5) Hard Copies of a Complete Charter Application

All charter applications, regardless of type submitted to Brevard Public
Schools, must include additional components required by the
District, as permitted by charter law
Brevard Charter Application –Additional Requirements
In addition to the state required application and attachments, Brevard School District requires each applicant to include the following modifications and Addendums:
• Modify Attachment W to include a Revenue Estimating Worksheet for each year of the requested charter term.
• For Attachment X, use Brevard's 5-Year Budget Spreadsheet
• Add Addendum GG, Brevard's 50%75%100% Contingency Budget Spreadsheet
• Add Addendum HH, Letter - Extension of Time to Review Charter Application
• Add Addendum II, Letter - Notice of Electronic Mail Correspondence

Remember the two key underlying concepts:
•A charter school is a significant business.
•A charter school is also an educational entity, subject to
many of the same federal and state requirements as a
district, and some additional specific charter school
requirements.

The purpose of the interview is for clarification of any section within the application. • Applicant can bring anyone to the interview; however,
individuals should be prepared to answer any question pertinent to the application

◦ Interview Will Include the Governing Board Members of Applicant Submitting Application
DOE Technical Assistance
A charter school applicant must participate in the training provided by
the Department of Education after approval of an application; but at least 30 calendar days before the first day of
classes at the charter school
