Last RiverDogs Game: June 5 Two of Charleston’s All-Star selections were on full display as first baseman Mickey Gasper clobbered a solo homer to tie the game with two outs in the seventh and left fielder Canaan Smith drove a fly ball out to deep right-center to take the lead in the ninth as the RiverDogs snuck away with a series win, taking a 2-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at First National Bank Field. In a tight pitchersdule, Charleston All-Star Alexander Vizcaino went just about pitch-for-pitch with Grasshoppers righty Osvaldo Bido, turning in seven strong for the fourth time this season. A pair of back-to-back two-out singles allowed in the second were nearly enough for the ‘Hoppers in the contest. Vizcaino was bailed out on a tremendous defensive play by Brandon Lockridge when the Charleston centerfielder leapt at the wall to rob Rodolfo Castro of a home run to right-center in the third, a drive that would have made it 3-0 Grasshoppers. Doggie Bites Hey Now, You’re an All-Star: The South Atlantic League announced the rosters to the 60 th Annual All-Star Game, tabbing six RiverDogs to the Southern Division squad, including LF Canaan Smith and RHP Luis Gil who will each start the game for the Southern Division, joined by teammates RHP Alexander Vizcaino, OF Josh Stowers, C Josh Breaux, and INF/C Mickey Gasper. The six selected are the most RiverDogs voted in on the initial ballots since the 2005 season, the Dogs’ first year as a Yankee affiliate. Defensive Coach Francisco Leandro will also join the players on the Southern Division coaching staff. Locked In: Charleston center fielder Brandon Lockridge crushed his team-leading ninth home run of the season on Monday, continuing to flash his newfound pop from the leadoff spot. The Florida native’s recent power stroke has been a continuing trend for the Troy University product, marking his seventh home run in his last 23 games; Lockridge notched just one homer in 26 games in his pro debut last season and had never hit more than 6 in a single-season in three years at the collegiate level. The Pensacola native is hitting .326 (43-132) since May 1, which ranks 6th among qualifying hitters in the league in that stretch. His 29 XBH are the 3 rd -most in the league. After batting just .169 (13-for-77) over his first 19 games of the season in which he struck out at a 38 percent rate, Lockridge has hit .307 (46-for-150) in 35 games since, having cut his strikeout rate down to 20% over that span (34 SO/168 PA). He had reached base in 22 consecutive games until going 0-for-4 Wednesday. Two Way Threat: Brandon Lockridges impressive first-half also has him chasing history as he looks to become just the 21 st RiverDog and the 33 rd player in Charlestons franchise history (circa 1980) to post a 10-and-10 season, needing just one home run to eclipse double-digit homers as well as stolen bases on the season. Charlestons most recent 10-and-10 campaign came in 2017, when now YankeesNo. 1 prospect Estevan Florial swiped 17 bases and popped 11 homers over 91 games with Charleston; it took the 19-year-old standout until June 24 to accomplish the feat when he hit his 10 th homer in his 64 th game at Greenville. Tyler Austin (2012) was the quickest to accomplish the feat in the past seven seasons for the Dogs, crossing the 10 stolen base threshold 41 games into the season on May 21. Holding Steady: After a 15-5 stretch from April 25-May 16, the RiverDogs have gone 8-10 over their last 18 games since to maintain their first-place position in the SAL Southern Division, led by an improved lineup top to bottom. After ranking among the bottom four in the league in runs scored (3.4 per game) over the first 20 games of the season, the RiverDogs have scored 204 runs over their last 39 games (T2nd in the SAL in that span, 5.2/gm) with 174 allowed over that stretch. Charleston also leads the league in total hits (346) are T-2 nd in doubles (87), and are second in the SAL in hitting (.259), total bases (564), OBP (.336), SLG (.423), and OPS (.759) since the hot streak started on April 25. The club’s staff ERA is also 3.72 in that span, ranking sixth in the league. Land of Canaan: Add Charleston outfielder Canaan Smith to the list of sizzling-hot RiverDogs hitters, as he owns a .336 (43-128) average in his last 32 games since the beginning of May, T-3rd in the SAL in that span. During the hot streak, Smith has 19 extra base hits, 23 runs scored, 70 total bases and is slugging .547 with an OPS of .965. During his torrid stretch, he hit for the cycle in the 13-5 win on May 12 at Hickory, the first for the RiverDogs since 1997. Pinstriped Prospects: The RiverDogs will again tap into a deep farm system in the New York Yankees. Losing some of their organizational talent due to promotions and trades in the last year, the Yankees’ farm system fell from the second-best system in the game to 20 th on the Baseball America rankings heading into 2019.
