• May 1301
• The Archbishop of Esztergom, Gregory, crowned Charles Robert as Hungarian king, however Charles Robert wasn´t crowned with St. Stephen´s crown.
• He was crowned with an occassional crown.
• The magnates of Hungary didn´t accept him as king and didn´t consider his coronation valid.
• They claimed that the Hungarian king can only be crowned with the Holy Crown of St. Stephen.
• Charles Robert was crowned for the third time.• With the Holy Crown as Charles I. on 27 August 1310
in Székesfehérvár.
ATTACK OF BUDA
• September 1302
• Charles Robert attacked Buda, however he was unsuccessful.
• Because of this, the papal legate imposed a curse on Buda – interdiction, but it was not valid.
WAY TO THE THRONE• 1305
• King Václav II. died and his son, Václav III. became king of Bohemia.
• The young king had many enemies so he signed a peace treaty with Albrecht and renounced the Hungarian throne.
• It happened in the summer of 1305 so the way to the throne of Hungary opened for Charles Robert.
• The decisive battle between Charles Robert and Amade Aba´s sons happened on 15 June 1312 at Rozhanovce.
• Charles with the help of the citizens of Košice defeated the Amade clan.
• After the battle the situation changed in favour of Charles and he became a sovereign monarch.
• He confiscated the properties of the Amade clan and gave them away to the nobility.
• With this act Charles found favour with most of Hungary´s middle aristocracy.

• At first Charles reorganized the Monetary Chambers. • On the example of Florence, they started minting
Hungarian gold florins in 1325.
• Gold coins – florins• Silver pennies• Denars
• Besides the economy Charles reorganized the Hungarian military system too.
• He allowed his magnates to have their private troops – bandérie.
• Those together with the Royal Army formed the basis of the military forces of the Hungarian Empire.

• 1335• Charles was also a good diplomat. • In Visegrád he organized a meeting for the three
kings – the king of Hungary, John Luxemburg of Bohemia and Kazimir III. of Poland.
• Through diplomatic ways he secured the throne of Neaples for his son Andrew.

• 1327
• Freedom of mines – the mine owners were allowed to mine ore but they had to pay taxes – urbura.
• Two Mining Chambers were established in Kremnica and Smolník.
