Woodbury Rotary Lunch Club President Roger Jonesthanks Past President and fellow Rotarian Warren Carrwho presented a program at the club’s weekly meetingyesterday. Warren’s topic was focused on the Economicsprior to World War 1 and events leading to the war toend all wars.

The war officially ended when Germanyagreed to lay down its weapons onNovember 11, 1918. In 1919, thevictorious Allies, led by Britain, France, and the United States, met in Paris todecide the fate of the empires they haddefeated. Their decisions transformedEurope's borders. The Austro-Hungarianempire was carved up into six newcountries. One of these, the awkwardlynamed Czechoslovakia, would split intothe Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1992.The former Serbia was combined withterritories annexed from Austria-Hungaryto form Yugoslavia, a national home forSouth Slavic peoples. It, too, disintegrated in the early 1990s,

producing several small nations that exist in the Balkans today. The Soviet Union lost some of the RussianEmpire's former territory to the new Baltic states and to Poland. Poland, along with France, got chunks ofGermany. Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia are gone, but the other new states persist today, so it's fair to saythat World War I set the contours for the modern European state system.

Changes to Europe after World War I

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heirpresumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wifeSophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, happened on 28 June 1914 inSarajevo.

Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28. On August1, after hearing news of Russia's general mobilization,Germany declared war on Russia. The German army thenlaunched its attack on Russia's ally, France, through Belgium, violating Belgian neutrality and bringing Great Britain into thewar as well.

Over the next four years, the Great War (as World War I wasthen called) would grow to involve Italy, Japan, the MiddleEast and the United States, among other countries. Morethan 20 million soldiers died and 21 million more werewounded, while millions of other people fell victim to theinfluenza epidemic that the war helped to spread.

Warren’s Brief Summery of World War I.
