OUR SERVICES FOR YOU IN 2016 The Trustees routinely review the activities of GLMCC to ensure they continue to reflect the objectives and aims of the charity and provide an overall benefit to the public. In carrying out this review the Trustees continue to consider the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit and in particular its supplementary public guidance on the advancement of religion for the public benefit.

RELIGIOUS SERVICES AT A GLANCE: Fundamental to Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre is the worshipping of Allah Almighty, the Lord of the Worlds. GLMCC is proud of its wide range of religious services.

Prayer Facilities: GLMCC is open for congregational prayers every day of the year. The five daily prayers, Friday prayers and Tarawih prayers during Ramadan helped thousands of Muslims within the local community and beyond fulfil a fundamental obligation within the Islamic faith.

This last year saw the completion of a prodigious refurbishment of the prayer facilities, washing facilities, lobbies and roof. Improving the facilities for the service users, was of paramount importance. Underfloor heating, glass bi-folding doors, TV Screens, lighting, modern washing facilities, and the main focal point of the Masjid, the Mihrab and Mimbar were all redesigned and modernised. This has created a more comfortable, accessible and welcoming place of prayer.

Ramadan: The month of Ramadan was, as is every year, the most eventful time in the GLMCC calendar. Thousands partake in prayers each night. Meals to break the fast (iftar) were provided every evening and breakfast (suhoor) was provided in the last ten nights.

The prayers were accompanied by beneficial reminders, short lectures and opportunities for the congregation to donate towards various causes. I'tikaf (seclusion) was again offered in 2016 (40 people across the UK) for those who wished to dedicate their time to worship.

Eid: Our flagship event of the year is Eid in the Park celebrating the important festival of Eid ul-Fitr marking the end of the month of Ramadan. Eid in the Park 2016 was attended by over 88,000 congregants who joined the prayer, many of whom attended the day-long activities on offer in the park, including a funfair, Animal Man, a host of food outlets as well as stalls and other activities. The event is the largest of its kind in Western Europe and received extensive press, TV and radio coverage by local, national and international news agencies. The event continues to grow year on year and we are grateful to our partners, including Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Police as well as our sponsors Human Appeal.

Structured classes: Education and training has always been a priority at GLMCC. Making good use of our floor space resource, GLMCC can hold general classes for the duration of the day, at night, both weekday and weekends, including languages and different Islamic education courses for all levels.

GLMCC, as a pioneer in religious education and propagation, held a series of popular structured classes. Education is vital in building a self-assured Muslim community who add to the more extensive society as well as grasp their British personality.

Some ofthe structured classes include: Class Average

Sisters Education and Sisters Tarbiyyah: Our objective at GLMCC is to educate and promote true Islam, catering to the needs of all members of our community. With this in mind, it is imperative to have women only classes. Each subject contains distinct levels to suit all capacities. These structured classes were open for all adult females of all ethnicities and backgrounds. GLMCC plays a key role in educating and developing women from the Birmingham community.

Madrasah Salafiyyah ~ Evening Supplementary School: Madrasah Salafiyyah, an evening school during the week aimed at educating Muslim children in the fundamentals of the Islamic faith, continues to grow from strength to strength. The number of classes held and the length of the waiting lists pay testimony to the reputation and quality of the teaching.

The continuous development ofthe core curriculum has provided the pupils with a learning technique, which they are already accustomed to through their secular education at school.

The approach to learning incorporated Islamic Studies, Hifdh (memorisation) and Qur'an recitation into a comprehensive syllabus designed for each age group, has been a huge success. All staff are subject to a rigorous training and development programme that takes place every other Friday evening to ensure that they are up to date with latest social, teaching and engagement techniques, as well as being up-to-date with child protection, safeguarding and other compliance obligations.

Each month the madrasah holds separate 'chill out days' for pupils that have been recognised by their teachers for their hard work, enthusiasm and excelling in a number of areas.

With the implementation of the pure Hifdh (memorisation) programme, 2016 saw 6 students complete the memorisation ofthe whole Qur'an.

The end of 2016 witnessed a spectacular Celebration Ceremony, an evening of awards, certificates and trophies for an impressive number of students for their achievements.

Due to popular demand GLMCC continued to host its bi-monthly school visits. School children enjoyed a two-hour session exploring the masjid, learning basic concepts of the Islamic faith. They also enjoyed small treats iike colouring books and sweets.

The success of these visits is transparent, with some schools incorporating the visit to GLMCC into their Religious Education syllabus.

Looking forward, GLMCC has schools booked to visit in 2017 and we hope to build stronger relationships with more schools across Birmingham.

Knife Bank: In an effort to keep the streets of Birmingham safe and free from crime, GLMCC teamed up with Birmingham Empowerment Forum to place a Knife Bank in the GLMCC car park. This bin is located in a prominent position where people can dispose of weapons in a safe manner. This bin is safely and securely emptied by the Birmingham Empowerment Forum team twice a year, along with a designated representative at GLMCC and the contents are then disposed of safely.

Zakah Service: Zakah, unlike any other Sadaqah (charity), is an obligatory form of worship. Like Salah (prayer) it has conditions which must be met, responsibilities which must be discharged and crucially - to have the correct intention of undertaking this great act of worship. If a person has saved up money above a certain amount, and a whole year passes, he / she must pay 2.5% ofthis in Zakah. At GLMCC we provide a Zakah service that has enabled Muslims to fulfil this obligation. We encouraged Muslims to give locally to aid locally as per prophetic tradition. GLMCC has been holding a Zakah service since 2011.

The majority ofthis money has been given to local people, and sometimes we receive cases nationally who we are obliged to help and assist. In short, GLMCC collects Zakah funds, processes applications and distributes to those eligible to receive Zakah.

GLMCC also works with external organisations based in the UK and abroad which are specifically setup as Zakah services, and with other charity organisations. GLMCC works with these service provides to refer cases, to receive financial support specific to Zakah, or to distribute Zakah that GLMCC has received as part of the Zakah process. \

People want to give to their own communities so GLMCC has a dedicated and committed team to ensure that we are providing a first-rate service that is also carrying out its duties responsibly.

GLMCC, working with the Department for Work and Pensions to help local people get back into work. This free service is delivered weekly by a professional DWP Advisor offering support with CV building, job searches, interview preparation and planning, careers advice service, training workshops, benefits advice and supporting self-employed people. Our aim has been to improve the quality of living standards of our community by offering services, which develop individuals in all spheres of their lives. Job Club has seen a steady increase in people using the service.

Coffee Morning: Social activities at GLMCC is imperative to strengthening community spirit.

Our Coffee Morning provided a relaxed socialising environment for women. Furthermore, it enabled women to get involved in other areas of the Masjid. Over the last year those who have attended baked cakes, delivered workshops and seminars using their own skills and experience such as general health checks, diabetes awareness, crochet and knitting. This has provided a regular time to relax, unwind and get creative. In 2016 Coffee Morning volunteers also introduced Story Corner for the kids where each week a story is read out to all the children. The vision for 2017 is to introduce a social hour for men too.

IVIorning Pure Match - Matrimonial Service: Pure Match Introductory Marriage Service was setup by GLMCC as a response to demand from our community. Marriage is a challenging process so Green Lane Masjid has arranged an on-line introductory service where an individual may register his or her details and search user profiles for a suitable match.

With over 6000 users the service demands have increased over the last year. GLMCC has a plan for a complete website change and relaunch starting in 2017 in an attempt to improve the service for its users.

GLMFS - Green Lane Masjid Funeral Service: The Green Lane Masjid Funeral Service (GLMFS) provides a necessary service to the Muslims of our community. The funeral service was initially setup to provide burial advice and support. The expanding congregation and therefore demand has led to GLMCC providing a service that strictly adheres to the rules and regulations of the local council and in accordance with authentic guidelines stipulated in Islam.

Imam Question and Answer Service: We have a regular Q & A service where our Imams are ready to answer and/or advise on Islamic questions/matters. The service is either through face to face meetings, via telephone or email. These enabled users to have direct access to qualified people pertaining to religious questions/matters. On average throughout 2016, Imams were dealing with 30 calls and 12 emails per week.

TFGLM -Taskforce Green Lane Masjid - Humanitarian Relief: Taskforce Green Lane Masjid are the humanitarian team that identify areas most in need of aid. Working in partnership with humanitarian charities, Taskforce GLM will undertake activities, which not only deliver aid, but also empower local people to support themselves over a longer period.

Throughout 2016 Taskforce GLM worked tirelessly to raise funds to aid projects both nationally and internationally.

Donations were raised through various means and a huge £1.2 Million was raised. TFGLM held a number of events throughout the year, to raise funds for humanitarian relief and each event and fundraising opportunity was a great success. Events included fundraisers in GLMCC, Charity Dinners, Cake Sales, and Food Stalls afterthe Friday prayer.

The events held by TFGLM proved very popular and the response left GLMCC very humbled by the community spirit and compassion shown. Whilst this is an essential service to those suffering overseas, this service provides a necessary and practical opportunity for those who wish to participate and help the affected people in disaster zones such as Syria. This is a transparent, reliable and effective service helping those in need and thus allows people to channel their efforts through correct sources and avoid the danger of attempting to get involved in travelling to conflict zones and getting involved with the wrong people and ending up in trouble.

The turnout was fantastic and the spirit amongst everyone was vibrant. Teams working together, encouraging each other, persevering and finally reaching the peak! Remembering how fortunate we are, being grateful for everything we have and being inspired by others tp always do better.

Bread Distribution: Task Force GLM and Human Appeal distributing bread to the Syrian Refugees in a camp that is located at the top of a mountain in a remote area which is very difficult for the charities to get to, however with our partner charity Human Appeal we are able to get bread to these people all year round.

Winter Project:

Aid trip to Lebanon

Distribution of Winter Clothing

£100,000 raised.

o TFGLM started a new Emergency Winter Appeal in 2016, with the aim of providing winter clothing to 25 Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon. Although the appeal is still on going, the response so far has been overwhelming. The TFGLM volunteers visited the camp to distribute items such as coats, hats, gloves and scarves.

Cakes 4 Syria: A seasonal favourite where people get the chance to give money to charity. Cakes are sold via social media and a website and donors purchase the cakes and the money is then donated to the Syria Bread project. TFGLM use a dedicated network of unpaid volunteers and partners who work tirelessly to hand deliver the cakes anywhere within the West Midlands. The total amount raised through this initiative was £18,000.

Volunteers: Since its establishment in 1979, the volunteers at GLMCC have been the backbone. Many of the services that we operate today are staffed by people who are volunteers. The various teams require different skills and experience therefore all of our volunteers bring something new to the organisation. We value the contribution of all individuals irrespective of age, skills, background or experience. Each role is different and as such every volunteer is different.

2016 saw an influx of core volunteers that were ready to give time to GLMCC whenever needed. We also saw an increase in people wanting to volunteer at various events throughout the year. Volunteer meetings and development meetings took place in 2016 ahead of big events. They were rewarded for their level of commitment and hard work with a volunteer's meal and retreat. The commitment of volunteers remains unparalleled and all have worked tirelessly throughout the year empowering GLMCC further.

Ali have worked tirelessly throughout the year Empowering GLMCC further.

Budding Believers:

Methods used in teaching | Numbers of Teachers and Children

The vision at Budding Believer's Club is to nurture within our young children a love and passion for authentic Islam, and to equip them with the social skills and the Islamic etiquettes to be successful individuals.

We do this by holding sessions that are engaging, fun and interactive. This teaching style captures the minds of the children so they see the beauty of Islam and learn good etiquettes that shape their character and daily conduct.

In 2016 the children from Budding Believers held a bake sale after Friday prayer, to raise money for Birmingham Children's Hospital and raised just over £300.

Kickboxing: In house kickboxing sessions for ages 7-19 years continues to be very popular and demand is always high. With a trained professional instructor, the sessions include various aspects of kickboxing. A contact sport which helps

promote fitness, confidence, and self- defence.

Currently the kickboxing is open to boys only, with plans for the future for girls' kickboxing.

Scouts:

Work commenced on setting up our own Scouts group at GLMCC for both boys and girls. Meetings are ongoing with the Scouts Association and the process of setting up has started. We believe this is an invaluable activity for our youth gaining essential skills for themselves and to serve the community. Watch this space!

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2016

GREEN LANE MASJID REFURBISHMENT Extensive refurbishment work has been undertaken at GLMCC to upgrade the Wudhu and Prayer facilities for the benefit ofthe congregation.

Entrance Lobbies The men's entrance lobby has been extended to increase space and flow of people especially during peak times. The works carried out in the lobby area include:

An extension to the lobby area increasing capacity

Introduction of extra entrances to the exterior as well as from the lobby into the Masjid

New doors and windows, allowing more natural light and ventilation to the area, and improved insulation in

the winter months

Introduction of underfloor heating, which is far more effective in heating the area and also helps with heating

the floor during wet days. Increased shelving for shoes and a nicer tiled finish to the floors and wall which is

easier to keep clean in one ofthe heaviest used areas in the masjid.

The sisters have also benefitted from increased space for shoe storage, new doors and windows and a nice

finish.

New LED lighting has also been introduced to make the area a brighter place which is hugely cheaper to run.

A dedicated seating area for sisters who find it difficult to climb the stairs to the 1 s t floor has been introduced

next to the lobby entrance, which has seating for approximately 20 sisters which is connected by audio and

video by means of a TV screen which enable sisters to see the speaker during Friday Khutbahs as well as other

programmes.

New Wudhu Facilities The previous wudhu facilities suffered from numerous problems including defective drainage resulting in foul smells and blockages. Inadequate ventilation and poor flooring which caused standing water and slippery surfaces. Problems also existed with the restricted water flow, which on occasions resulted in loss of water supply to taps, especially at peak times.

The entire wudhu facility was completely gutted out and new works included:

• Complete brand new drains installed

• Underfloor heating

• New boiler and hot and cold water tanks

• Ventilation System

• New toilet cubicles

• New sanitary ware

• New wudhu troughs and free-standing wudhu stations

• New sinks

• New LED lighting

• New doors, windows and roof lights

• New tiling and redecoration throughout

• New disabled toilet and shower

These works resulted in a brand new wudhu facility for both men and women. 30% increase in WCs for brothers, more wudhu place especially with the introduction of the new free-standing wudhu troughs. The underfloor heating helps in keeping the floor dry and no standing water. The sisters previously only had 3 WCs. Now they have 12 toilets and more sinks, wudhu troughs and a baby changing facility.

Additionally, it is a cleaner, better, brighter and more spacious facility with more efficient heating and lighting.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND EVENTS Celebrate Eid 2016: Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha Eid in the park 2016 was a phenomenal success. Congregants joined the prayer and people enjoyed the festivities throughout the day. The Eid prayer was the largest hosted in Europe. Held in Small Heath park with a host of activities available, suitable for the diverse age groups.

A valuable collaboration with various masaajid (mosques) within the community, getting together, planning a bigger better event than the previous year.

The Salah (Prayer) was the highlight and inspiration of the outdoor event. The event saw an increase of almost 20% from the year before. The prayer was an amazing spectacle bringing together over a third of Birmingham's Muslim population.

The festivities were a main attraction for the event incorporating more family fun including mini golf, rodeo bull and a larger selection of soft play. The sheer number of people in the fun fair area post-closing time showed how the festivities added to the experience of the day. The bazaar, particularly the diverse range of food that added to the festival atmosphere.

It was an opportunity to showcase the importance of Eid to the greater population. The reporting coverage was a marked success with an audience reach spanning over 19.3 million people.

We believe this will empower GLMCC to fortify its conveyance through utilising its Islamic ethos to profit Muslims and Non-Muslims.

TFGLM - Task Force Green Lane Masjid: TFGLM are consistently researching and documenting the needs of people all over the world. One of the many aims of TFGLM is to help alleviate poverty and suffering of people wherever they may be. 2017 will see the discussion, planning and launch of a new project that will focus on helping as many people as possible.

TFGLM will also continue in its efforts with the recently launched Emergency Winter Appeal throughout 2017. Hoping and striving to reach more and more people and to impact as many lives as possible.

Celebrate Eid 2017: After the monumental success of 2016, work for Celebrate Eid 2017 started many months ago. Our aim is to have a bigger and better Celebrate Eid event, attracting everyone from far and wide. A community event for all, regardless of ethnicity or religion, a place for family and friends and community cohesion.

FINANCIAL REVIEW Investment policv and performance

GLMCC has various purpose-built rooms accessible to let with shared kitchen and WC. This is solely aimed at single males. Every so often, GLMCC procures out its Community Hall and different regions of the site. Rental income from these facilities for the period added up to £35,299 (2015: £33,795) and was utilised to subsidise the charities activities.

Principal funding sources The charity's main source of income is voluntary donations. During the year £2,339,597 (2015 - £1,686,034) was raised through such donations. Ofthis source of income, £1,717,940 (2015: £1,169,393) were restricted funds to be applied for in specific areas of the charity's work. Details of the restricted funds and their purpose can be found in note 19 to the financial statements.

Reserves policv Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre recognises the importance of having reserves. These funds are freely available to spend on any ofthe charity's purposes - and hence exclude restricted funds. They will be used to mitigate significant falls in income or to take advantage of new opportunities.

Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre faces a number of risks that may result in the need to use the charity's reserves. Some of these include:

- Reduction in donations from congregation / members of the public. - Unexpected refurbishment costs in relation to the listed building from which the charity operates. - External factors impacting the charity, such as National Living Wage increases or increasing utility bills.

Green Lane Masjid and Community has set its reserves at £120,000. This covers approximately four month's operational expenditure. It is the Trustees view that this amount means the charity has a balanced approach between having funds available to run the charity on a day to day basis and keeping funds aside in case any of the risks mentioned above materialise The Trustees also believe this level of reserves provides the charity with adequate financial stability and the means to meet its charitable objectives for the future.

The level of reserves will be reviewed annually to ensure alignment with risks the charity faces. They will be kept in a bank account that does not have bills / expenditure paid from it. Reserves will only be used with prior agreement from Board of Trustees via agreement in a trustees meeting.

Going concern After making appropriate enquiries, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. For this reason they have continued to adopt the going concern basis concept in preparing the financial statements.

GREEN LANE MASJID AND COMMUNITY CENTRE

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FORTHE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2016

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES GENERAL INFORMATION SECTION AND BASIS OF PREPARING THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS The financial statements ofthe charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention with the exception of investments which are included at market value.

The Statement of Financial Activities (SOFA) and the Balance Sheet consolidate the Financial Statements ofthe charitable company and its subsidiary undertakings. The results of the subsidiary undertakings are consolidated on a line by line basis.

No separate SOFA has been presented for the charitable company alone as permitted by section 408 of the Companies Act 2006.

These financial statements are the first financial statements of Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre prepared in accordance with FRS 102, "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland". The date of transition to FRS 102 was 1 January 2015. The reported financial position and financial performance for the previous period are not affected by the transition to FRS 102.

INCOME All incoming resources are included in the Statement of Financial Activities when the charitable company has entitlement to the funds, certainty of receipt and the amount can be measured with sufficient reliability.

Gifts in kind donated for distribution are included at valuation and recognised as income when they are distributed to the projects. Gifts donated for resale are included as income when they are sold. Donated facilities are included at the value the charitable company where this can be qualified and a third party is bearing the cost. No amounts are included in the financial statements for services donated by volunteers.

Donated services or facilities, which comprise donated services, are included in income at a valuation which is an estimate of the financial cost borne by the donor where such a cost is quantifiable and measurable. No income is recognised where there is no financial cost borne by a third party.

Income tax recoverable in relation to donations under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.

Investment income is earned through holding assets for investment purposes such as holding cash on deposit and the letting or rooms for hire. It includes interest and rent. Interest income is recognised using the effective interest method and rent income is recognised as the charity's right to receive payment is established.

EXPENDITURE Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount ofthe obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year-end date are noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure.
