IN

It is interesting how language is used. We speak of something being “in” style, or we say I’m in Cincinnati, I’m in the hospital, a star is “in the house,” I’m in trouble, I’m in love, yes I’m in. The list goes on and on. As parents we want our children to be in good groups in school, we want them to be successful in life, live in a good neighborhood, and get in a good college. Most of all a parent wants to always protect their child from suffering. The fact of the matter however is that we can’t protect our children from everything. We try but life happens. This truth helps us to realize that it is most important that our children know in their deepest identity that they are in God. They are never alone. This will help them through everything they are in. In this truth is the meaning of all we do and all we are. It is not surprising then that the first prayer we teach our children in Catechesis is the Sign of the Cross – In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Church is more than something we sign up for. God invites us into the biggest reality that there is, into the very life of God in the Trinity. We live and move and breathe in God. Therefore the truth the child learns through practicing faith and attending Catechesis is that church is not another thing to do. We are not members of a club whose activities and gatherings interest us. In the deepest level of our being we are the faithful who are in the Body of Christ – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Trinity inspired and invited us into participation in the Church, a living organism, the Body of Christ. This is the reality we live in. This is the foundation for all our sacraments, worship, prayer, and for all we do in our lifelong faith formation programs whether it be in Catechesis, school, or adult formation and for all we do in helping each other foster dignity for all. We are blest here at St. Paul with a strong community. Strong seniors that have endured all the hardships of life with grace, fortitude, and model discipleship. Strong young families that are committed to passing on and practicing the faith with their children. In Mass God calls us together during all the times of our life, joyful, sorrowful, and glorious to worship God and participate in the mysteries of God’s life. It is a simple act and the most profound. We are in the Body of Christ. It is from that reality that we invite the children in to Catechesis. Here is a small sample of a few of the things going on in Catechesis. We have 1271 children in catechesis with over 100 volunteers and fantastic involvement from our priests. Our catechists attend lesson planning meetings plus faith formation opportunities are offered. We are one of the largest programs in the diocese. We have 6 different options or learn-ing styles to choose from, 3 of which center in family participation. We offer Communion and Confirmation retreats plus parent meetings. Our Catechesis classes offer fun and serious opportunities to become closer to Jesus through Scripture, Worship/Prayer, Service, and teachings of the Church. Our children have performed and participated in over 4,000 acts of service each year. We have over 200 - 1st Reconciliations, over 200 - 1st Communions, and over 200 Confirmations. Each grade has a class Mass yearly and participates in Reconciliation. During the summer we have a fun packed week in Vacation Bible School. In an effort to support young families we also offer a lively music class with parents and children 5 and under. To keep the parents in the know there is an informative web site and a weekly newsletter. Most weeks we highlight through photos in the bulletin and on the website and newsletter all the interactive learning activities that are going on in the classrooms. The Spirit moves St. Paul community and gathers and invites people to journey through life together as the Body of Christ – In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen, Anna Mae Parkhill – Director of Catechesis

Collecting Palms

We will be collecting old palm branches to be burned for the ashes we use on Ash

Wednesday. There will be collection boxes located in the Upper and Lower Churches for

three weekends, January 27-28, February 3-4 and February 10-11.

Parishioners may also bring their old palm branches to the rectory

during the week as well. Palms will be burned on Monday, February 12th, weather permitting.

This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend.

Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, “Come, Follow Me” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to

share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of

many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Liam J. Conlon was honored for achieving Boy Scouting’s highest rank on January 6th

when he was sworn in as an Eagle Scout.

A 2014 St. Paul of the Cross School graduate and a senior at Maine South, Liam was joined by present and former scouts, leaders, and family from SPC’s

Troop 24 at the Kinane Center ceremony.

His service project, one of many requirements for the rank, was reconstruction of a sizable number of raised planting beds in the St. Paul Parish Vegetable Garden

to allow for greater depth & increased food production for the needy, accomplished last spring with sawing, drilling, shoveling and support from nearly two dozen

fellow scouts and adults.

Troop 24’s history dates to 1931 and it has helped shape hundreds of boys, more than 40 of them Eagles. Troop 24 meets most Mondays at 7 p.m. in Duffin Hall. St. Paul of the Cross has an active Cub Scout Pack as well.

“YOUR FAITH HAS MADE YOU WELL”

We see in today’s Gospel, Jesus telling his Apostles that His purpose for coming was to preach to the people, and Mark said,

“So He went into their synagogues preaching and driving out de-mons through out the whole of Galilee.”

We have heard of the many stories of healings done by Jesus when He was preaching here on earth. Why did He heal so many, no

matter what the illness was? Pope Benedict XVI wrote, “This showed that the Kingdom of God, God Himself, is at

hand. Jesus Christ came to defeat evil at the root and instances of healing are an anticipation of His triumph, obtained with His Death and Resurrection. The Word of God teaches that there is a crucial basic attitude with which to face illness and it is that of faith in God in His goodness. Jesus always repeats this to the people He heals, ‘Your faith has made you well.’ ”

Many of the faithful come to our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel for different reasons. The thread through all of this is their faith in Jesus. They come before His Body and Blood, present in the Monstrance, to pray and adore Him in an intimate way. Through the ages, Jesus has said to us, “Trust in Me.” He has invited us to visit Him and talk with Him about our needs, worries and troubles. He will listen and always helps us in some way. It is then that you will hear Him say, “Your faith has made you well.”

Are you looking for something to “Give-up” or “Give” for Lent?

How about “Giving-up” one specific hour a week, and “Give” that hour to Jesus by visiting His Real Presence at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel.

“Your faith will help you realize that it is Jesus Himself Who is present in the Blessed Sacrament, waiting for you and calling you to spend one special specific hour with Him each week.”

St. Pope John Paul II

This Lent answer the call. Choose the same day and hour during the Lenten week to visit Jesus. Sign-up sheets can be found in the vestibules of the Church and Adoration Chapel and at the exits of

the Holy Family Chapel, or you may email your day/hour selection to [email protected].

Anticipation

Have you ever thought that Jesus anticipates your arrival? That He is waiting for you and looking forward to your visit with Him with great expectation at the Adoration Chapel? When this thought hit home to me, I became a Committed Adorer. For twenty plus years I have been blessed to be in parishes where Eucharistic Adoration was available, yet it was not until a few years ago that I realized the impor-tance of becoming a Committed Adorer. Often I dropped in at my convenience without feeling the need to make a commitment. On occasion I was asked to become a Committed Adorer. Then I reflected on the many times in my life when others have been there for me on a particular day and a particular time making that day and hour available for me. I remembered looking forward to my Sunday afternoon phone visit with my mother who lived in another state. When I had children, I couldn’t wait for every Wednesday when my sister would visit and provide support and companionship. When my father-in-law moved into an assisted living home I visited him every Thursday. It was something he and I anticipated. As grandchildren arrived, I visited them on a particular day each week, a day we all anticipated. These instances helped me realize how much joy there is in waiting for a dear one to arrive: the excitement, the looking out the window, checking the clock, and having thoughts and plans to share with a dear friend. We all enjoy and appreciate a drop in visitor. But I came to know the beauty and value of anticipating a weekly visit with a treasured loved one, same time, same day each week. And to think that you are that person that Jesus is waiting to see! He is looking forward to seeing you and sharing time with you, loving and consoling you. He can’t wait until you arrive so you can share all the joys and sorrows of the past week. Thank God for all the Committed Adorers, and those who drop in. Perhaps you can commit to your special day and time to be with Jesus; He is already anticipating you!

The Adoration Program is required to have Committed or Substitute Adorers scheduled for each hour the Blessed Sacrament is exposed.

Could you help us reach the goal of having 3 Committed Adorers at each hour Adoring, Glorifying, Praising and Thanking Jesus for His Generous Blessings?

St. Paul of the Cross Parish Educational Endowment Fund Maureen McCambridge Scholarship Event

Maureen McCambridge wished for an endowment fund to help St. Paul of the Cross students and teachers. She began this concept in 1999 and it became a reality a few years later. After her passing in 2005, the endowment received several donations and a scholarship was created in her name. Every year since then, the Maureen Kelly McCambridge Scholarship has been awarded to an outstanding 7th grade student based on leadership, character and service. This is a great tradition, and her family would like the

scholarship awareness to keep growing. Today, the Endowment funds a total of eight annual scholarships, provides stipend awards for our dedicated teachers, as well as financial support to after-school enrichment clubs and mission trips for our youth group. The Endowment also provides a yearly grant to education. The grant is applied towards operating expenses and has allowed St. Paul of the Cross School to keep tuition increases to a minimum SPC and Maureen’s family would like to spread the word about the great work of the Endowment and encourage every 7th grade student to apply for her wonderful scholarship. There is no better way to do so than by gathering together as a community and celebrating her legacy. This event will honor Mo’s favorite things – family, children, leaders, teachers, students, food and friends. It will be a family event on

March 3rd, 2018 after 4:30pm Mass in the Parish Life Center.

Tickets can be purchased here: https://spcsch.ejoinme.org/maureenmccambridge

All questions & volunteer inquiries can be directed to Meghan McCambridge at [email protected].

NURSE’S NOTES………. Hello everyone! We’re at the beginning of another American Heart Month and I’m certain that we’ll see and hear advice on how to keep our hearts healthy. This is a good thing, but happily, what helps to keep our hearts healthy can also help to keep our brain, kidneys, liver, etc., in good shape. For instance, peanuts, and tree nuts like walnuts, pistachios

and pecans help to bolster HDL levels, (the good cholesterol, high density lipopro-teins), while helping to lower the bad LDLs, (low density lipoproteins). These nuts can help to keep arteries clear and our heart rhythm stable. When arteries are clear around and to the heart, they can likewise be clear to the brain and other organs, thereby bringing needed oxygen and nutrients. Steel cut oats and rolled oats can also be helpful here and these are just some examples of how consuming a healthful diet can benefit the heart and the body in general. Congestive heart failure or CHF or just heart failure, is a challenging heart problem that can sometimes sneak up on us. Here are some early warning signs which, if recognized, can prompt treatment and lifestyle change which can help to slow the progression of this condition. Known as ”FACES”, here are these early signs of CHF: F is for fatigue, (we become tired easily), A is for activity limitation, (our normal day to day activities may become overwhelming), C is for congestion, (not the nasal kind experienced in a cold, but a build up of fluid caused by an inefficient heart), E is for edema, (swelling in the body, especially in the ankles), and S is for shortness of breath: we “huff and puff” easily during normal, not excessive, activity. Some newer research suggests that having a thyroid problem, (over-active, hyperthyroid or under-active hypothy-roid), may be a possible contributor to arterial fibrillation or “A-fib”, a heart rhythm disorder predisposing people to a higher risk of stroke, and as well to hypertension, (high blood pressure). So if we experience either a-fib or hypertension, investigating the health of our thyroid is a good thing. The following foods are reputed to be power foods for women, but men’s health can also benefit from this group of nutritious foods as well because they can help to lower the risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes. They are: nuts, tomatoes, berries, quinoa (pronounced “keen-wha”, an ancient grain), leafy greens, fatty, cold water fish like wild caught salmon and low-fat yogurt. And, there’s speculation that cottage cheese may become the “new yogurt”---we’ll stay tuned. Cooked tomatoes become a power food, more so than when consumed raw. They contain a powerful antioxidant, lycopene, which helps to lower the risk of stroke; and for men, prostate cancer. Cooked tomatoes may help to reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure levels and if we add olive oil we increase the benefits. By the way, if we taste a small amount of olive oil and experience a scratchy or funny sensation in the back of the throat, it’s a good thing because that’s the “anti-inflammatory compound” in olive oil.. FYI: though counter-intuitive, foods containing chili peppers are helpful against chronic inflammation in the body, even though our mouths may sting some, when eating them. Until next week, let’s remember that, “every life has its dark and cheerful hours. Happiness comes from choosing which to remember.” Be kind to your heart.

Fondly, Linda Burk, Your Parish Nurse
