A Message from the Principal:What a year to be a Cleveland sports fan. I am writing this before the outcome of the fall classic between the Chicago Cubs and our Cleveland Indians.

So, is there something to 2016 in the 216? As we change our clocks back one hour, it is essential we continue our forward progress at Chardon Middle

School. As we start the month of November, it is evident our learners at CMS are meeting our expectations with great success. I want to thank our PTO

and all the exceptional volunteers for yet another phenomenal Move-a-Thon. Our students truly enjoyed the activities and the opportunity to enjoy the

outdoors with their peers. This endeavour would never be achieved without the help of others. CMS is so appreciative of the support received from our

students, staff, parents, and community. Our Halloween Dance, sponsored by Chardon Middle School student council was a great success on Friday,

October 28th. Thank you to all for supporting a memorable moment for our students.

The next principal’s coffee will be November 29th, at 8:15 a.m. This is a casual setting to share ideas, concerns, and gather additional information about the happenings at CMS. Please plan to join me for coffee!

Team 8B

Leaves fall, seasons change, and Team 8B continues pushing students to learn and experience new things. As the weather gets colder, studies in all classes will heat up as students continue to strive to acquire new skills in all subject areas. Don’t worry! Americans once again won the American Revolution. Students will be Studying the United States Constitution. They will learn how the government was and is organized.

In science we are studying earthquakes and volcanoes. Please keep up with your child’s Google Classroom to find out the day to day lessons, activities, and assignments. In language arts students are reading suspense selections. They are analyzing setting, characterization, and mood in suspense and horror stories. Students will then use these skill to write their own suspense narrative. Along with this, good writing skills are being studied. In Honors English I students are in the process of reading The Odyssey and analyzing traits of epic heroes. Students will then write their own odyssey narrative.

October was a busy month for our 8th grade Pre-Algebra students. They have been hard at work simplifying, evaluating, comparing expressions and equations using both the Algebra tiles and algebraically. They have been creating a table of values, graphing linear and nonlinear equations and writing a rule for the patterns. Science is all about understanding plate tectonics, the modern versus old theory, and how tectonic plate boundaries impact the shaping and changing of the earth’s surface through volcanoes, earthquakes, faults, folds, and ridges.

Band Notes:

Thank you all for a successful Cheese and Sausage fundraiser AND a great night

at DQ after our October band concert!

Our next concert is December 19 at 7 PM in the MS gym! 6th, 7th, and 8th grade

band will play, as well as our Jazz Band! Holiday and secular songs will be

enjoyed by all!

Food Service News

Don’t forget to start your day with a healthy breakfast. Breakfast is available daily at Chardon Middle School.

Breakfast cost is $1.50 for full pay or $ .30 for reduced pay. We have included some of your child’s favorite foods for

breakfast…. Cereal, Bagels, Nutri Grain bars, Banana Bread, Muffins, Fresh Fruit, Breakfast Sandwiches, Milk, Juice and

Yogurt. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 440-286-0425.

Application Information

If a student was approved for free and reduced meals in our school district last year, he/she may retain that carryover eligibility for the

first 30 operating days of school. We treat free and reduced status in a confidential manner. Families may apply at any time throughout

the school year. If approved for free or reduced meals, take advantage of this valuable benefit to help stretch the family budget.

Although we are allowed 10 operating days to process applications, we will process the applications as quickly as possible. Parents must

pay full price for meals, until the application is approved. APPROVAL OF YOUR APPLICATION CANNOT BE RETROACTIVE

TO MEALS ALREADY SERVED.

Student Personal Hygiene ………...………….Lori Strickland, RN

Once a child reaches middle school age, he or she is usually responsible for their own personal hygiene practices. Some students are very diligent about their hygiene, but many need parental supervision at home. Poor hygiene is noticed by other students and often becomes a potential source of teasing. Students with poor hygiene are often ostracized by their classmates. They may begin to suffer from lack of self esteem which may lead to other emotional problems.Please promote the physical, social and emotional health of your child by closely

monitoring their hygiene practices at home. Insist on daily shower or bath, frequent shampooing, frequent trimming and cleaning of nails, daily use of

deodorant, wearing clean clothes and shoes, daily dental flossing, and brushing teeth before coming to school, after meals as much as possible, and before

bedtime. Instilling good hygiene behavior in your child now, will help to create healthy lifelong hygiene practices.

We are pleased to announce that our school counselors were awarded the Kinetico Teen Education Grant to help support their efforts to provide a proactive school counseling program that reaches all students at CMS. The money provided from this grant will be used to create a transition program for students new to Chardon Middle School.

Our school counseling program covers three main areas that we will highlight each month. Academic: After school help sessions start this week! Students from NJHS and NHS will be in the media center from 2:30-3:30 pm every Tuesday and Thursday to provide extra help for students. Social/Emotional: The school counselors worked with a few 7th grade classes to proactively address bullying concerns and brainstorm ways to be upstanders. The Chardon Kind Club attended a Kindness Rally at Mentor High School to kick-off school-wide initiatives promoting a culture of kindness. Finally, discussion groups have begun during advisory and lunch times. Career & College Readiness: All students have completed career inventories within Naviance and were encouraged to share their results with their parents and guardians. Next month will kick off our Geauga Growth Partnership field-trips for 8th grade students. These are designed to teach students about various careers within Geauga County.

6th Grade Math Fact Challenge!C.M.S. 6th grade students recently competed in a Moby Math Fact Challenge both as individuals and teams to improve their math fact fluency! At the end of the 6 day contest, in a close contest Team 6B (Mrs. Dragar) prevailed over 6A (Mr. Francis) & kept the ‘Moby Trophy’. The great news is that the two teams combined to correctly answer over 30,000 math facts last week!

Congratulations to the top 5 individuals from each team, who each won some fun prizes from their teachers!
