The Institution Population Characteristics report reflects prison population as of the date they were posted to the Offender Based Information System (OBIS).Report categories that are not self-explanatory are defined as follows:

INSTITUTION POPULATION

Age Groups Grouping of age into year intervals for summary statistical purposes.

California Department of Corrections (CDC) The state agency which has jurisdiction over the California prison and parole system.

California Youth Authority (CYA) The state agency which has jurisdiction over juvenile offenders who are wards of the juvenile, municipal and superior courts.

Camps Facilities that house 60-160 minimum custody inmates to work on conservation projects or fight fires.

CNA A Civil Narcotic Addict offender civilly committed to CDC for treatment of narcotic addiction per W&I Code 3000 et seq.

Commitment Type Type of legal consignment to a penal institution such as Felons, Civil Narcotic Addicts, County Diagnostic Cases (under Penal Code Section 1203.03), some Youth Authority commitments, federal prisoner and prisoner from other states.

Diagnostic Case An offender placed by the court in CDC custody for a pre-sentence diagnostic evaluation (Penal Code § 1203.03).

Escape Return Escapee returned to institution custody to finish their commitment (ESCTFT) and escapee returned with a new felonycommitment (ESCWNT).

State/Federal/CYA Inmates committed to federal, other states or California Youth Authority institutions, who are being housed in a CDCinstitution.

Felon A person convicted of a felony offense and sentenced to state prison by the court.

New Admit The first commitment from the court for felons, civil narcotic addicts, safekeepers, county diagnostic cases, and thosereceived for the first time from other jurisdictions.

PV-WNT Parolee violators returned with a new felony commitment.

Racial/Ethnic Groups Grouping of racial and ethnic origins into four major groups, White, Black, Hispanic (Mexican), and Other, for summarystatistical purposes.
