Task 1: CharactersRelating to Q1 in the Exam

Action Adventure films have stereotypical characters in them and your task is to define the characteristics of these characters.• First you must choose a film scene that demonstrates

a stereotypical hero and villain character within the genre and explain why they are stereotypical.

• Now you must choose a film scene that demonstrates a stereotypical female character within the genre and explain why she is stereotypical.

For a higher mark refer to Propp’s theory of character types

In this scene Superman is portrayed as a stereotypical character because he is being a hero by being brave challenging his enemy and saving the day. In the fight he also evidences that he has special powers, is very strong and is skilled at fighting which are all common stereotypes for the hero. Finally, Superman’s physique is stereotypical because he is good looking and very muscly (hyper-masculine). The villain in the scene is also stereotypical because he represents evil, is fighting the hero and presents a challenge because he is also strong and skilled too.Higher MarkThe characters within the scene link to Propp’s theory as there is evidence of a hero and a villain however some of the other character types are not evidenced.

The events in this scene are stereotypical for action adventure film because the scene takes place in the dangerous setting of a busy motorway, there is a chase happening involving lots of dramatic stunts and because there is physical violence when the protagonist fights the antagonist. Higher MarkFurthermore, regarding Todorov’s theory there is a disruption in the equilibrium that is restored as the end of the scene when the hero protagonist saves the day.
