Mountain Topics Algonquin Chapter ADK February-April 2019
Greetings and Best Wishes for The New Year,
As we begin 2019 please note that the Algonquin Chapter membership numbers over 300 strong. We can accomplish a lot together with this much talent, diversity and energy. Please let any of the “Algonquin Chapter Leadership 2019,” noted in the “Mountain
Topics” newsletter, know what you are thinking. What ideas do you have to better serve your interests? What ideas would you like to express, sugges-tions for places to explore, hikes to take, museums to visit and so on? What can we do to bring more children and young people into our programs? All suggestions will be considered by the Leadership of your Chapter.
Let’s have a good year working together. Think snow.
Ray Johnson

ADK Board of Directors ReportDecember 1, 2018 in Lake George by Steve Baker1. National Election: Changes coming as well as halting of efforts to undo possible
crippling of environmental legal regulations and laws.
2. DEC: There is a need for more forest rangers; hope is for 40 additional rangers as well as classes to train them. ADK is in support of this.
3. The rail car issue appears to be dead. The line is to be used to ship stone for con-struction purposes.
4. The pro-trail crew bides to the state were rejected due to “mistakes” in the bids. This was due to the state requiring appropriate pay rates for specific jobs (stone work; mason wages), and workers compensation, all at differenct rates (wage scales). There is hope the crews will be working for other parties such as The Na-ture Conservancy, etc. whom will not require the wage rates.
5. Previous employees of ADK Loj, Chefs Dan Winkler and Kevin Seligmann have returned.
6. Education: The school outreach program is continuing to be a success. Schroon Lake was added to the list. ADK received another grant for the 46ers for continued work and educational videos in support of the program.
