Our MissionWe mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS.

Annual Message 2013

For our MS Awareness Week campaign this past year, we used the phrase “Chances are Someone Close to You is Living with MS.” Approximately 20,000 individuals across Illinois are living with multiple sclerosis, but the impact stretches so much further. MS touches us all, whether you are personally living with an MS diagnosis or have a family member, friend, neighbor or co-worker who is affected by the disease.

At the Greater Illinois Chapter, we are addressing the needs of all people affected by MS, from our “Meeting the Challenges” program, which helps those who are newly diagnosed, to our “Success with MS” series, which is geared to assisting caregivers. Through our Financial Assistance program, we are assisting those most in need through supportive services, including transportation and home modifications. Our open houses, family day programs and youth summer camp are bringing people together from all walks of life for socialization, information sharing and to provide support to one another.

We continue to be leaders in the area of MS research, with 30 Society-funded projects currently taking place right here in Illinois. Chapter fundraising efforts through special events, including our signature Walk MS and Bike MS, brought in nearly $4.5 million in FY2013, which supports critical research being used to develop new therapies and treatments in our labs and clinics throughout the state.

In the past year alone, so many new faces have joined together in the movement to end MS — fundraisers, event participants, activists, legislators, medical professionals, staff members and volunteers. Through these dedicated and collaborative efforts, we are moving ever-closer to a world free of MS.

Chapter Highlights

Bike MS: Tour de Farms, which took cyclists through the rolling hills of northern Illinois, ratcheted up its gears in 2013, with more than 2,200 riders raising $1.62 million.

The Chapter announced its newest fundraising event, MuckFest MS, a fun-filled 5K romp through mud and obstacles, will take place August 23, 2014.

The 35th Annual Carol Cohn & Margie Weil Memorial MS Outing hosted by Chapter Board member Joseph Weil topped $1 million for the first time in the event’s history. More than 500 attendees participated in the all-

day event in Highland Park, which featured 18 holes of golf, mahjong, live and silent auction and dinner program, honoring Renée Crown for her leadership and generous support over the outing’s 35 year history.

Justine Fedak, Senior Vice President and Head of Brand, Advertising and Sponsorships for BMO Financial Group, brought the capacity crowd at the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Chicago to its feet at the seventh annual Women on

the Move luncheon, presented by BMO Harris Bank and Walgreens. The event raised a record $154,000 and was highlighted by a visit from Chicago Bulls’ mascot Benny the Bull.

Northern Trust’s Chairman and CEO Rick Waddell was honored at the Chapter’s annual Dinner

of Champions gala at the Four Seasons Chicago, which raised $650,000.

MS support groups, more than 50 statewide, led by a diversity of volunteer peer facilitators, helped hundreds of individuals living with

MS and their care partners connect with others facing similar challenges related to MS.

Nearly 1,300 individuals volunteered their time with the Chapter by staffing fundraising events, facilitating support groups and peer support programs, lending their professional talents to special projects and office work, chairing their own fundraisers, lobbying elected officials, and providing leadership as members of the Board of Trustees.

Do-it-Yourself fundraisers held 39 third party events across Illinois, raising over $147,000, including the Habing Family who

hosted their inaugural “Run in Dress for MS” in downstate Teutopolis, which brought in a whopping $21,000.

Multiple Solutions, the junior board of the Greater Illinois Chapter, comprised of young professionals dedicated to creating a world free of MS, hosted three signature fundraising events: Slugfest, Soirée and Pub Crawl.

More than 40 volunteer MS activists and Chapter staff met with legislators in Springfield for MS

Action Day. State capitol triumphs included passage of legislation that created an Illinois MS Task Force, only the second of its kind in the nation, to identify and concentrate on the unmet needs of individuals living with MS.

do it yourself

“Cutting edge remyelination research and potential treatments could revolutionize my future and the futures of people with more present symptoms than I have.”

Heather Daigle Xu, Diagnosed in 2002

Legislation increased allocations from the Illinois Lottery Fund to $2 million annually (from $1 million) for pilot grants awarded to statewide MS researchers focused on rehabilitation and nervous system repair.
