When you have malaria you have fever: you sometimes feel cold and shiver, and you sometimes feel hot and sweat. You feel pain in the body, and you have a headache. Sometimes people with malaria vomit and have diarrhoea, but not always.

Chapter 6: Lesson 2
Malaria is a very dangerous disease. It makes you sick. It can take your time and your money. Malaria can kill. It kills a lot of people, especially little children.
But it can be cured. When people have malaria, give them plenty of drinks, and take them to the health centre for medicine immediately. Little children can die in a day if they do not get treatment.

Malaria is caused by a tiny invisible living thing, a parasite. It lives and grows in people’s blood. If you have the para-site in your blood, you get malaria. The parasite is carried from sick people to healthy people.
Only one thing can carry the parasite from a sick person to a healthy person. This is a special kind of mosquito, the anopheles mosquito. It is very dangerous.

There are many ways of avoiding mosquito bites. We can:- spray rooms with insecticide- light a mosquito coil- rub our skins with special lotion- sleep under treated mosquito nets- put oil onto pools of water- � ll holes and pools of water- bury empty tins or turn them upside down- wear clothes which cover us well- cut long grass near the house- put screens on windows.
