YOUNG TOWN. San Vicente has a relatively young population. In 1990,nearly 65% of residents belonged to the 0-24 age bracket, according to theMunicipal Planning and Development Office.

SAIL AWAY. A tourist boat sits on the shore ofPort Barton at sunset after a day's workferrying visitors to nearby islands.

SUN, SAND AND SEA. There's white sand as faras the eye can see at Long Beach, viewed herefrom New Agutaya.

PADDLE AND PLAY. Two young boys paddle theirbancas near the mouth of a mangrove riverflowing out to sea in New Agutaya.

GOD-GIVEN HIGHWAY. Fishing boats making their way along the placidwaters of a mangrove river is a familiar sight at the Old Site in BarangayCaruray.

REEF CHECK. SHELL POWER. The tarab or fan shell is one of thecommercially important resources found in the coastalarea of San Vicente.

DOWNSIDE OF DEVELOPMENT. Mining for silica and theconstruction of a pier have caused siltation and beach erosion in sitioSta. Cruz, Barangay Caruray.

SILICA TROUBLE. Development causes pollution from an exposedsilica mine in Naonao, Port Barton.

SEA GARDEN. Staffers of the Technical Assistance Office check outthe seaweed farm in Gawid, one of the sitios of Caruray.

ONE BOAT TOO MANY. Commercial fishing boats, such as this one,have been blamed for the rapid depletion of coastal resources all overthe Philippines.

LOCALS KNOW BEST. Participants help the PCRA team identify thevarious resources they have listed in the barangay maps.

HOMEGROWN LEADERS. Community leaders from various villages taketurns shading the coastal resource map of San Vicente during the municipalPCRA training at the Poblacion.

SOILED SEA. Lack of toilets and pollution from domesticwastes are major concerns in San Vicente, where manymigrants have settled along beach fronts that are notreached by government programs.

THE PLACE THEY CALL HOME. Many fishers live in woodenshacks on the water. This settlement is located in Pagdanan,Barangay Port Barton.
