Chapter 2MEASURING, PERIMATER, AREA, GRAPHS

By: Rain E. Burton and Alexia A. Bayer-Snyder

Review of Chapter

0Review Words-• Perimeter• Area• Data• Bar Graph• Line Graph

0Prerequisite Skills1. The area of a figure is measured in

square units.2. In a line graph, your connect the

data points with line segment.3. Need to find the perimeter of a

triangle with given side lengths.4. Need to be able to estimate on a

bar graph.5. Need to evaluate the expression

when x and y mean certain numbers.

2.1Measuring Lengths

Vocabulary

0 Inch0Foot0Yard0Mile0Millimeter0Centimeter0Meter0Kilometer

Review of Content0Using a ruler you can measure

the length of a segment. If a segment is 4 1/5 centimeters long it would be 42 millimeters long.Twelve inches are in one foot. Three

feet are in one yard. Thirty-six inches in one yard. 1760 yards are in one mile. 5280 feet are in one mile.

10 millimeters are in one centimeter. 100 centimeters are in one meter. 1000millimeter are in one meter. 1000 meters are in one kilometer.

0 A scale drawing is the same shape as the original object but not the same size. The scale tells how the drawing’s dimensions and the actual dimensions are related.

2.4Frequency Tables and Line Plots

Lesson

0Vocabulary-0Data0Frequency Table0Line Plot

0You can organize data, or information by using a frequency table. A frequency table lists the number of times each item occurs in a data set. A line plot uses X marks above a number line to show the frequencies.

0Bar Graph0Double Bar Graph

Review of Content

0 A bar graph uses the lengths of the bars to represent and compare data. A numerical scale is used to find the lengths of the bars.

2.6Coordinates and Line Graphs

Vocabulary

Review of Content

• A graph shows a point on a coordinate grid. Each point is described by an ordered pair of numbers. The numbers are the coordinates of the point. The grid is formed by two number lines, one vertical and one horizontal, called axes. The axes intersect at the origin.

• A line graph represents data using points connected by line segments. Line graphs are often used to show change over time. You can make a break at the begging of the scale to focus on the interval where the data fall.

2.6Circle Graph

Lesson 2.6

0A circle graph is a graph that represents data as parts of a circle. The entire circle represents all of the data. You can make conclusions about the data in a circle graph based on the size of each section.

2.8Mean Median Mode

(MMM)

Lesson 2.8

0Vocabulary-MeanMedianModeRange

0 Mean- The mean of a data set is the sum of the values divided by the number values.

0 Median- The median of the data set is the middle value when the values are written in numerical order.

0 Mode- The mode of the data set is the value that occurs most often.

0 Range- The range of a data set is the difference between the greatest value and the least value.
