Irrigation is the process of supplying water to areas of land to make them suitable for growing crops.

In the US, more water is used for irrigating farmland than any other single purpose.

Industry (factories)

Water is used to produce most objects. Water may not be part of the final product but it is part of the industrial process. (ex. Paper)

Power plants and steel mills need huge volumes of water to cool down hot machinery.

Food processing industry uses water to clean fruits and vegetables.

Water and Living Things

Water makes up nearly two thirds of your body.

Plants use water to make food in a process called photosynthesis.

Water is home, or a habitat, for some animals; both fresh and salt water.

Water on Earth

Oceans cover nearly 71% of Earth’s surface.

97% of Earth’s water is salt water while only 3% is fresh water.

Of that 3%, most is frozen in ice or in the atmosphere.

Water vapor is the gaseous form of water, it is found in the atmosphere.
