Discrete time martingalesMartingales a temps discret
In this chapter, we summarize the theory of discrete time martingales. Most properties
will be included in the next chapter, when we shall study the continuous-time martingales.
temps continu.
0. Reminders about conditional expectation.Rappels sur les esperances conditionnelles
Let (⌦,F ,P) be a probability space. Let G ⇢ F be a sub--algebra [sous-tribu] of F .
For any real random variable X with E(|X|) < 1, E(X |G ) is a random variable such that :
• E(X |G ) is G -measurable ;
• E[ |E(X |G )| ] < 1 ;
• 8A 2 G , E(X 1A
) = E[E(X |G )1A
].
There is, for E(X |G ), existence and uniqueness (uniqueness in the sense that if Y is a
random variable verifying these properties, then E(X |G ) = Y almost surely (a.s.) )
• E(X |G ) est G -mesurable ;
• E[ |E(X |G )| ] < 1 ;
• 8A 2 G , E(X 1A
) = E[E(X |G )1A
].

Some properties of conditional expectations :
Throughout the following, E(|X|) < 1, E(|Xn
|) < 1 8n, G and H are sub--algebras of
F .
• E(X) = E[E(X |G )].
• If X is G -measurable, then E(X |G ) = X a.s.
• Linearity. E(a1 X1 + a2 X2 |G ) = a1 E(X1 |G ) + a2 E(X2 |G ) a.s.
• Positivity. If X  0 then E(X |G )  0 a.s.
• Monotone convergence. If 0 Xn
" X, then E(Xn
|G ) " E(X |G ) a.s.
• Fatou’s lemma. If Xn
 0 then E(lim infXn
|G ) lim inf E(Xn
|G ) a.s.
• Dominated convergence. If |Xn
(!)| V (!) 8n, E(V ) < 1, and Xn
! X a.s., then
E(Xn
|G ) ! E(X |G ) a.s.
• Jensen’s inequality. If c : R ! R is convex and E|c(X)| 1, then
E[c(X) |G ]  c(E[X |G ]) a.s.
• Tower property. If H is a sub--algebra of G , then
E[E(X |G ) |H ] = E(X |H ) a.s.
Notation. We sometimes shorthand the left hand side to E(X |G |H ).
• “Taking out what is known” If Y is G -measurable and E(|XY |) < 1, then
E(XY |G ) = Y E(X |G ) a.s.
• Independence. If H is independent of ((X),G ), then
E(X | (G ,H )) = E(X |G ) a.s.
In particular, if X is independent of H , then E(X |H ) = E(X) a.s.
• Suppose ⇠ and ⌘ are random variables taking values in measurable spaces (E1,E1) and
(E2,E2) respectively, and ' : E1 ⇥E2 ! R is measurable such that E(|'(⇠, ⌘)|) < 1. If ⇠ is
G -measurable and ⌘ is independent of G , then
E('(⇠, ⌘) |G ) = h(⇠) a.s., where h(a) := E('(a, ⌘)).
• E(X1 |G )  E(X2 |G ) a.s. , E(X1 1A
)  E(X2 1A
) 8A 2 G .
Notation : When G = (Z) where Z is a random variable with values in any measurable
space, we write E(X |Z) instead of E(X | (Z)).
1. Discrete time martingales Martingales a temps discret 3
Certaines proprietes de l’esperances conditionnelles :
Dans toute la suite, E(|X|) < 1, E(|Xn
|) < 1 8n, G et H sont des sous-tribus de F .
• E(X) = E[E(X |G )].
• Si X G -mesurable, alors E(X |G ) = X p.s.
• Linearite. E(a1 X1 + a2 X2 |G ) = a1 E(X1 |G ) + a2 E(X2 |G ) a.s.
• Positivite. Si X  0 alors E(X |G )  0 p.s.
• Convergence monotone. Si 0 Xn
" X, alors E(Xn
|G ) " E(X |G ) p.s.
• Fatou lemme. Si Xn
 0 alors E(lim infXn
|G ) lim inf E(Xn
|G ) p.s.
• Convergence dominee. Si |Xn
(!)| V (!) 8n, E(V ) < 1, et Xn
! X p.s., puis
E(Xn
|G ) ! E(X |G ) p.s.
• Inegalite de Jensen. Si c : R ! R est convexe et E|c(X)| 1, puis
E[c(X) |G ]  c(E[X |G ]) a.s.
• Propriete de la tour. Si H est un sous-tribu de G , alors
E[E(X |G ) |H ] = E(X |H ) p.s.
Notation.
E('(⇠, ⌘) |G ) = h(⇠) p.s., ou h(a) := E('(a, ⌘)).
• E(X1 |G )  E(X2 |G ) p.s. , E(X1 1A
)  E(X2 1A
) 8A 2 G .
4 Chapitre 1. Discrete time martingales Martingales a temps discret
1. Filtrations and martingalesFiltrations et martingales
Let (⌦,F ,P) be a probability space. A filtration (Fn
)n0 on this space is an increasing
family of sub--algebras of F :
F0 ⇢ F1 ⇢ F2 ⇢ · · · ⇢ F .
From time to time, (⌦,F , (Fn
),P) is called a filtered probability space (or filtered space).
Soit (⌦,F ,P) un espace de probabilite. Une filtration (Fn
)n0 sur cet espace est une
famille croissante de sous-tribus de F :
F0 ⇢ F1 ⇢ F2 ⇢ · · · ⇢ F .
filtre).
A sequence of random variables (Xn
, n 0) is said to be adapted with respect to (Fn
)
if for every n, Xn
is Fn
-measurable.
) si
pour tout n, Xn
est Fn
-mesurable.
Definition 1.1. We say (Xn
) is a martingale [resp. supermartingale ; submartingale] if
(i) (Xn
) is adapted ;
(ii) 8n, E(|Xn
|) < 1 ;
(iii) 8n, E(Xn+1 |Fn
) = Xn
, a.s. [resp., E(Xn+1 |Fn
) Xn
; E(Xn+1 |Fn
)  Xn
].
On dit que (Xn
) est une martingale [resp. surmartingale ; sous-martingale] si
(i) (Xn
) est adapte ;
(ii) 8n, E(|Xn
|) < 1 ;
(iii) 8n, E(Xn+1 |Fn
) = Xn
, p.s. [resp., E(Xn+1 |Fn
) Xn
; E(Xn+1 |Fn
)  Xn
].
Note that if X is a supermartingale, then n 7! E(Xn
) is decreasing. (The origin of the
expression : a function f is superharmonic on Rn if and only if for a Brownian motion B
with values in Rn, f(B) is a local supermartingale with respect to the natural filtration of
B.)
§1 Filtrations and martingales Filtrations et martingales 5
Example 1.2. Let (⇠i
)i0 be a sequence of integrable and independent random variables.
Let Xn
:=P
n
i=0 ⇠i and Fn
:= (Xi
, 0 i n).
It is clear that (Xn
) is adapted, and is integrable. In addition, E(Xn+1 |Fn
) = Xn
+
E(⇠n+1). So X is a martingale if E(⇠
n
) = 0, 8n  1 ; a submartingale if E(⇠n
)  0, 8n  1 ;
and a supermartingale if E(⇠n
) 0, 8n  1. 2
Soit (⇠i
Soient X
n
:=P
n
i=0 ⇠i et Fn
:= (Xi
, 0 i n).
Il est clair que (Xn
) est adapte, et est integrable. De plus, E(Xn+1 |Fn
) = Xn
+E(⇠n+1).
)  0, 8n  1 ;
et une surmartingale si E(⇠n
) 0, 8n  1. 2
It is clear that (Xn
) is a submartingale if and only if (Xn
) is a supermartingale, and
that (Xn
) is a martingale if and only if it is both a submartingale and a supermartingale.
Here are some other properties :
Il est clair que (Xn
) est une sous-martingale si et seulement si (Xn
) est une surmartin-
gale, et que (Xn
) est une martingale si et seulement si elle est a la fois une sous-martingale
et une surmartingale. En voici quelques autres proprietes :
Proposition 1.3. If (Xn
) is a submartingale, then 8m > n, E(Xm
|Fn
)  Xn
, a.s.
Si (Xn
) est une sous-martingale, alors 8m > n, E(Xm
|Fn
)  Xn
, p.s.
Proof. By the tower property and the martingale property, we have
E(Xm
|Fn
) = E[E(Xm
|Fm1) |Fn
]  E[Xm1 |Fn
].
This demonstrates the result we seek with an argument by induction. 2
Preuve.
Proposition 1.4. If (Xn
) is a martingale, and if ' is a convex function such that E(|'(Xn
)|) <
1, 8n, then ('(Xn
)) is a submartingale.
)|) < 1,
8n, alors ('(Xn
)) est une sous-martingale.
6 Chapitre 1. Discrete time martingales Martingales a temps discret
Proof. By Jensen’s inequality,
E['(Xn+1) |Fn
]  '(E[Xn+1 |Fn
]) = '(Xn
).
Hence the conclusion. 2
Preuve. Par l’inegalite de Jensen,
E['(Xn+1) |Fn
]  '(E[Xn+1 |Fn
]) = '(Xn
).
D’ou la conclusion. 2
2. Stopping TheoremTheoreme d’arret
Let (⌦,F , (Fn
),P) be a filtered probability space, and we note
F1 :=1_
n=0
Fn
:=

n=0
Fn
!
is the smallest -algebra containing all the elements of all the -algebras Fn
.
A function T : ⌦ ! N [ {1} is called a stopping time 1 if 8n, {T n} 2 Fn
. It is
clear that T is a stopping time if and only if 8n, {T = n} 2 Fn
. A simple example of a
stopping time is T := n (a constant stopping time).
The -algebra FT
is defined by
FT
:= {A 2 F1 : 8n, A \ {T = n} 2 Fn
}
= {A 2 F1 : 8n, A \ {T n} 2 Fn
}.
Soit (⌦,F , (Fn
F1 :=1_
n=0
Fn
:=

Fn
!
.
Une application T : ⌦ ! N[{1} est appelee un temps d’arret 1 si 8n, {T n} 2 Fn
.
Il est clair que T est un temps d’arret si et seulement si 8n, {T = n} 2 Fn
. Un exemple
simple de temps d’arret est T := n (temps d’arret constant).
1. Throughout the course, N := {0, 1, 2, · · · }. Durant tout le cours, N := {0, 1, 2, · · · }.
§2 Stopping Theorem Theoreme d’arret 7
La tribu FT
est definie par
FT
:= {A 2 F1 : 8n, A \ {T = n} 2 Fn
}
= {A 2 F1 : 8n, A \ {T n} 2 Fn
}.
Proposition 2.1. Let S and T be two stopping times.
(i) Then S _ T and S ^ T are also stopping times.
(ii) If S T , then FS
⇢ FT
.
(iii) If (Xn
) is adapted, then XT
1{T<1} is FT
-measurable.
(ii) Si S T , alors FS
⇢ FT
.
(iii) Si (Xn
) est adapte, alors XT
1{T<1} est FT
-mesurable.
Proof. (i) We have {S _ T n} = {S n} \ {T n} 2 Fn
, and {S ^ T n} = {S
n} [ {T n} 2 Fn
.
(ii) If A 2 FS
, then A \ {S n} 2 Fn
. When S T , {T n} = {S n} \ {T n}.
Then A \ {T n} = (A \ {S n}) \ {T n} 2 Fn
.
(iii) It suces to note that XT
1{T<1} =P1
n=0 Xn
1{T=n} is F1-measurable, and that for
all Borel A ⇢ R and for all n, {XT
1{T<1} 2 A} \ {T = n} = {Xn
2 A} \ {T = n} 2 Fn
,
hence {XT
1{T<1} 2 A} 2 FT
. 2
Preuve. (i) On a {S_T n} = {S n}\{T n} 2 Fn
, et {S^T n} = {S n}[{T
n} 2 Fn
.
(ii) Si A 2 FS
, alors A\ {S n} 2 Fn
. Lorsque S T , {T n} = {S n}\{T n}.
Alors A \ {T n} = (A \ {S n}) \ {T n} 2 Fn
.
(iii) Il sut de remarquer que XT
1{T<1} =P1
n=0 Xn
1{T=n} est F1-mesurable, et que
pour tout A ⇢ R borelien et n, {XT
1{T<1} 2 A} \ {T = n} = {Xn
2 A} \ {T = n} 2 Fn
,
ainsi {XT
1{T<1} 2 A} 2 FT
. 2
We are now interested in processes (XT^n) stopped at a stopping time T .
On s’interesse maintenant au processus (XT^n) arrete a un temps d’arret T .
Theorem 2.2. If T is a stopping time, and if (Xn
) is a submartingale, then (XT^n) is a
submartinagle.
sous-martingale.
8 Chapitre 1. Discrete time martingales Martingales a temps discret
Proof. As |XT^n| |X0| + |X1| + · · · + |X
n
|, XT^n is integrable. It is clear that (X
T^n) is
adapted because, by Proposition 2.1, XT^n is F
T^n-measurable, and the latter is a sub--
algebra of Fn
. Finally, since {T  n+ 1} = {T n}c 2 Fn
,
E⇥(X

which is what we had to demonstrate. 2
Preuve. Comme |XT^n| |X0| + |X1| + · · · + |X
n
|, XT^n est integrable. Il est clair que
(XT^n) est adapte car, by Proposiiton 2.1, X
. Enfin, puisque {T  n+ 1} = {T n}c 2 Fn
,
E⇥(X

ce qu’il fallait demontrer. 2

Corollary 2.4. Suppose that (Xn

E(XT

Soit (Xn

Theorem 2.5. Doob’s inequality Let (Xn

Proof. Exercise at example class. It is clear that the second inequality is a consequence of
the first and the monotone convergence theorem. 2
Preuve.
10 Chapitre 1. Discrete time martingales Martingales a temps discret
3. ConvergenceConvergences
We assume the following result :
If (Xn
) is a submartingale such that supn
E(X+n
) < 1, then X1 := limn!1
Xn
exists a.s.
[In the TD, we will prove that E(|X1|) < 1.]
On admet le resultat suivant :
Si (Xn
) est une sous-martingale telle que supn
E(X+n
) < 1, alors X1 := limn!1
Xn
existe p.s.
[Aux TD, on va prouver que E(|X1|) < 1.]
Theorem 3.1. If (Xn
) is a positive supermartingale, then X1 := limn!1 X
n
exists a.s.,
and E(X1) E(X0).
Si (Xn
) est une surmartingale positive, alors X1 := limn!1 X
n
existe p.s., et E(X1)
E(X0).
Proof. The existence of X1 is proven from the fact that (Xn
) is a submartingale such that
(Xn
)+ = 0 and thus supn
E[(Xn
)+] < 1. Since E(Xn
) E(X0), Fatou’s lemma tells us
that E(X1) lim infn
E(Xn
) E(X0). 2
Preuve.
(Xn
)+ = 0 et donc supn
E[(Xn
)+] < 1. Puisque E(Xn
) E(X0), le lemme de Fatou
nous dit que E(X1) lim infn
E(Xn
) E(X0). 2
Theorem 3.2. If (Xn
) is a martingale such that
E✓supn
|Xn
|
◆< 1,
then there exists a random variable X1 such that Xn
! X1 a.s., and in L1.
In addition, Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
).
Si (Xn
) est une martingale telle que
E✓supn
|Xn
|
◆< 1,
! X1 p.s., et dans L1.
De plus, Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
).
§3 Convergence Convergences 11
Proof. We have E(X+n
) E(|Xn
|) E(supn
|Xn
|), and therefore supn
E(X+n
) < 1. As a
consequence, X1 := limn
Xn
exists a.s.
The convergence in L1 follows from the dominated convergence theorem.
It remains to prove that Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
). By the martingale property, if m > n and
A 2 Fn
, then E(Xm
1A
) = E(Xn
1A
). On taking m ! 1, and given the convergence in L1,
we have E(Xm
1A
) ! E(X1 1A
). Therefore E(Xn
1A
) = E(X1 1A
) = E(E(X1 |Fn
)1A
) for
all A 2 Fn
. In other words, Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
), a.s. 2
Preuve. On a E(X+n
) E(|Xn
|) E(supn
|Xn
|), et donc supn
E(X+n
) < 1. Par consequent,
X1 := limn
Xn
existe p.s.
A 2 Fn
, alors E(Xm
1A
) = E(Xn
1A
on a E(Xm
1A
) ! E(X1 1A
). Donc E(Xn
1A
) = E(X1 1A
) = E(E(X1 |Fn
)1A
) pour tout
A 2 Fn
. Autrement dit, Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
), p.s. 2
Corollary 3.3. Suppose (Xn
) is a martingale. If T is a stopping time, and if E(supn1 |Xn
|) <
1 (in particular, if (Xn
) is bounded), then E(XT
) = E(X0).
Soit (Xn
) une martingale. Si T est un temps d’arret, et si E(supn1 |Xn
|) < 1 (en
particulier, si (Xn
) est bornee), alors E(XT
) = E(X0).
Proof. Let n  1. Then T ^n is a bounded stopping time. Then by Corollary 2.4, E(XT^n) =
E(X0). It then suces to note that XT^n ! X
T
a.s., and apply the dominated convergence
theorem. 2
Preuve. Soit n  1.
E(XT^n) = E(X0). Il sut alors de constater queX
T^n ! XT
p.s., et d’appliquer le theoreme
de convergence dominee. 2
Theorem 3.4. If (Xn
) is a martingale such that
supn1
EX2
n
< 1,
then Xn
! X1 a.s. and in L2. In addition, Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
).
Si (Xn
) est une martingale telle que
supn1
EX2
n
< 1,
alors Xn
! X1 p.s. et dans L2. De plus, Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
).
12 Chapitre 1. Discrete time martingales Martingales a temps discret
Proof. From Doob’s inequality, supn
|Xn
| 2 L2, and is a fortiori integrable. By the preceding
theorem, we have a.s. convergence and Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
).
Since |Xn
 X1|
2 (2 sup
n
|Xn
|)2, the dominated convergence theorem implies that
E(|Xn
X1|
2) ! 0. 2
Preuve. D’apres l’inegalite de Doob, supn
|Xn
| 2 L2, et est a fortiori integrable. D’apres le
theoreme precedent, on a convergence p.s. et Xn
= E(X1 |Fn
).
Puisque |Xn
X1|
2 (2 sup
n
|Xn
|)2, le theoreme de convergence dominee implique que
E(|Xn
X1|
2) ! 0. 2
4. Doob’s DecompositionDecomposition de Doob
Let (⌦,F , (Fn
),P) be a filtered probability space.
Soit (⌦,F , (Fn
),P) un espace de probabilite filtre.
Definition 4.1. A family (Yn
, n 1) of random variables is said to be previsible if for all
n  1, Yn
is Fn1-measurable.
Yn
est Fn1-mesurable.
Theorem 4.2. (Doob’s Decomposition) All submartingales (Xn
) can be written Xn
=
Mn
+ An
, where (Mn
) is a martingale, and (An
) is previsible such that A0 = 0.
This decomposition is unique. In addition, (An
) is increasing.
(Decomposition de Doob) Toute sous-martingale (Xn
) s’ecrit comme Xn
= Mn
+An
,
ou (Mn
) est une martingale, et (An
) est previsible telle que A0 = 0.
Cette decomposition est unique. En plus, (An
) est croissante.
Proof. (Uniqueness). If (M,A) satisfy the conditions of the theorem, then
E[Xn
|Fn1] = E[M
n
|Fn1] + E[A
n
|Fn1] = M
n1 + An
= Xn1  A
n1 + An
.
So we necessarily have An
An1 = E[X
n
|Fn1]X
n1. The condition A0 = 0 implies that
the choice (An
) (also that of (Mn
)) is unique.
(Existence) Take (An
) such that An
 An1 = E[X
n
|Fn1]  X
n1, and that A0 = 0.
Since (Xn
) is a submartingale, one has An
 An1  0, and (A
n
) is therefore increasing.
Furthermore, An
=P
n
i=1{E[Xi
|Fi1]X
i1} is Fn1-measurable.
§4 Doob’s Decomposition Decomposition de Doob 13
To show that (Mn
:= Xn
 An
) is a martingale, we note that Mn
is integrable and
adapted, such that
E[Mn
|Fn1] = E[X
n
 An
|Fn1] = E[X
n
|Fn1] A
n
= Xn1  A
n1 = Mn1.
Therefore (Mn
) is a martingale. 2
Preuve. (Unicite).
E[Xn
|Fn1] = E[M
n
|Fn1] + E[A
n
|Fn1] = M
n1 + An
= Xn1  A
n1 + An
.
Donc on a necessairement An
An1 = E[X
n
|Fn1]X
n1. La condition A0 = 0 implique
que le choix de (An
) (dont aussi celui de (Mn
)) est unique.
(Existence) Soit (An
) telle que An
An1 = E[X
n
|Fn1]X
n1, et que A0 = 0. Comme
(Xn
) est une sous-martingale, on a An
 An1  0, et (A
n
) est donc croissante. De plus,
An
=P
n
i=1{E[Xi
|Fi1]X
i1} est Fn1-mesurable.
Pour montrer que (Mn
:= Xn
An
) est une martingale, on constate que Mn
est integrable
et adapte, tel que
E[Mn
|Fn1] = E[X
n
 An
|Fn1] = E[X
n
|Fn1] A
n
= Xn1  A
n1 = Mn1.
Donc (Mn
) est une martingale. 2
A martingale (Xn
) is said to be square integrable if E[X2n
] < 1 for all n. In this case,
(X2n
) is a submartingale. Let X2n
= Mn
+An
be its Doob decomposition. Moreover, the proof
of the preceding theorem tells us that
An
=nX
i=1
E[X2
i
|Fi1]X2

Une martingale (Xn
) est dite de carre integrable si E[X2n
] < 1 pour tout n. Dans ce
cas, (X2n
) est une sous-martingale. Soit X2n
= Mn
+An
An
=nX
