What is Chaparralʼs mission? Simply put it is, “Seeking and saving the lost.” We still believe that people without the love of Christ are lost. Christ admonishes His followers to go into all the world and make disciples among all the nations. Are we doing that?

The world without Christ is a world without hope. Even without earthquakes, tsunamis and out-of-control nuclear reactors, people without the direction of Christ are without hope. The Church is the singular community in the world that offers lasting, eternal hope. We must never forget that.

Chaparralʼs mission statement is, “We exist to be the presence of Christ.” What did Christ do while He was on earth? He proclaimed the good news to the lost. He cared for the sick, the hungry and the poor, called people to repentance, and condemned ungodly behavior. How is Chaparral carrying out Christʼs mission?

Our first and highest task is to proclaim the good news to the whole world. We do that in our preaching and teaching. We do that in bringing up our children to know the Lord. We do that by supporting missionary efforts in the United States and around the world. We do that through publications, publicity and outreach to all people. Every man, woman and child in the world deserves to hear the good news brought by Jesus.

Our children and youth are our first priority. Teachers and leaders in our Church family provide the best Bible

School and Youth Ministry of which we are capable.

Un-Churched people in our community are a priority. We open our buildings to people who need to know what the love of Christ really means. Musical groups, other communities of faith, and other worthwhile organizations experience the presence of Christ in our hospitality.

We provide activities that draw un-churched people to our campus. Our Healthcare Ministry, Wellness Center and Crossfit are out-reach activities that demonstrate Christʼs love for all. Our hope is that participants will be drawn to our Church family.

We respond to the needy by supporting House of Refuge and House of Hope, ministries to the homeless. A food pantry is maintained for the hungry. We support our Cityʼs programs to help the poor.

World Missions. On the Indian reservations, in Brazil, Southwest Asia, Mexico, Haiti and other places around the world we support people who witness to the good news of Jesus Christ. In April a group of our people will travel to Haiti to work with our mission there.

In short, everything we do as a Church is for the purpose of proclaiming the good news of our Lord, Jesus Christ, to the whole world. We must never forget that the truth of the love of God is the only hope our world has. We are not only the guardians of that truth, we are the ones who share it with all. Chaparral offers Christʼs hope to the world.

What is Chaparral’s Mission? Are we doing it?

Working with kids is not for the fainthearted! It is a wonderful active experience for men and women alike. If you ever have the opportunity to sit in one of our classes, you will be amazed at what our kids know about God and his stories! Mike Bolar is one of our amazing teachers who has been working with kids here at Chaparral for 9 years! One of the things Mike has said to me often is, “ I love to teach these kids - and I will do it as long as you want me to!” He believes it is part

of his calling to serve the Church this way. And really, what better way to serve than to teach the little ones about God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit? In today’s society there is so much that vies for our attention making it essential to remind our kids WHO is most important and who it is that loves us so much to give us this wonderful life.

Men working, teaching and playing with kids is important for a balanced program. Boys often identify with male leaders in a way that is different from how they identify with our women leaders and vice versa for our girls. When asked what he would tell other men and women considering working with the kids, Mike said, “We have made being a teacher very easy because we have built in flexibility with three leaders in each class, use a good curriculum so our lessons are prepared ahead of time, and have the availability of resources to enhance our classes.  Leading our kids is as much about letting them know they are loved, valued and important as it is teaching.  I believe it is important for men to be involved in leading and teaching alongside women in our kids classrooms as it adds another voice and perspective to what they learn.”

Our kids are the future of the Church!! If you are interested in finding out more about being a part of the Children’s ministry, come try it out! We will train you, give you the tools you need as well as the

flexibility to manage your schedule as needed! I promise it will be a job you will love! - Stacy Shirvinski

Men who currently serve in children’s ministry are Matt Armistead (3 & 4-year-olds), Dave Hinnant (1st grade), Mike Murphy (3rd grade), Mike Bolar (Club 45) and Kenny Bump (worship - camp and First Sunday!) These men serve alongside our many STELLAR women in the Children’s Ministry!

Especially for the little ones...When you think back to being a child, what was your favorite outdoor place to play? What did it look like and smell like and feel like? Many times adults remember natural play areas the most - a place by a stream, a muddy puddle, a fallen tree or even a big pile of dirt.

Unfortunately, our children may not have the same opportunities we did to play in natural areas because city living has become so prominent. With this in mind, we “playscaped” the southeast corner of the preschool building into a beautifully landscaped area with natural materials for the children to experience! It is not there just to look pretty, but it was specifically designed for the kids to play there and experience the natural materials with all of their senses.

Feel free to walk around, smell the plants and herbs, listen to the wind chimes, walkover the bridge or under the trellis. While you are at it, share with your child that special outdoor play place you just remembered.

Teen Musical 25th Anniversary

Friday & Saturday April 15 & 16 at 7:00 p.m.Sunday , April 17, at 1:30

(luncheon matinee) and 6:00 p.m.

When Chaparral produced its first teen musical, Jackie Huber, the current teen choir director, was in 7th grade. The musical was “A Christmas Carol” and it was the first in a long line of musicals presented by Chaparralʼs talented teens. Gilbert and Sullivanʼs masterpieces have long been favorites of our teens, including “Pirates of Penzance” and this yearʼs “Trial by Jury.” Come join the teens as they carry on the tradition of fantastic musical entertainment. Become a part of Chaparralʼs rich history as it unfolds in this hilarious and clever musical, starring our very own talented teens. Directed by Lucy DiGrazia, Marion Hostetler, Jackie Huber and Diane Wilson-Merle.

Jr Fine Arts Day Camp....Almost 30 Years!

June 13-17 - 2010/2011 school year 1st - 5th-graders

Much as I would like to take the credit for one of my favorite summer events, Jr Fine Arts Day Camp, it is my pleasure to share with you that the history goes back much earlier than 2008, when it first appeared at Chaparral. Back in 1982, when I was but a girl of 10, I attended my first Jr Fine Arts Camp, a “sleep-away” camp at UCYC in Prescott. It will not surprise you to know that, after that first year of camp, my mother, Marion Hostetler, became the Dean of this favorite summer week. She, along with many of her friends and acquaintances from the fine arts world (many still at Chaparral today), would volunteer their time and talent to organize this week filled with music, dance and visual arts, alongside camp skits, hikes in the wilderness and singing around a campfire. The week was always magical.

In resurrecting a form of this camp in 2008, I hoped to offer some of this magic to the children of Chaparral. Our dedicated and talented staff of volunteers love this week as much as I do. They pour their hearts, extraordinary skill and countless hours into preparing for, as well as teaching the myriad of classes we offer. Donʼt miss the opportunity to offer your child the magic that is Jr Fine Arts Day Camp! Be a part of the tradition!

Haiti Mission Team in Our Prayers!

As our team from Chaparral heads to Northwest Haiti Christian Mission in a few weeks, please keep several items near to your heart and daily prayer.

In preparation for this upcoming trip, pray for those from Chaparral who have been making diligent plans. Our team includes: Dr. Del Worthington, Wayne Worthington, Cres Worthington, Dr. Larry Hostetler, Gene and Maggie Haugen, and Bob Hicklin. Many others from across the United States will also be joining on this medical mission trip, so pray for the many doctors, nurses, and others who are also volunteering their time and having to make multiple arrangements to be in Haiti for this trip. Keep in mind those in Haiti who have been awaiting the arrival of the team. There are so many in search of healing and a helping hand. This is an answer to prayer for many of them.

The actual trip will be from April 15 through April 24. The majority of our Chaparral team will be there only the first week. Pray for safe passage to and from the mission which is in a remote area and difficult to reach. Following the trip, continue to keep the recipients of the surgeries in prayer as they recover and heal. May the people of Haiti and the medical team see the hand of God at work as they come together.

BBQ & Games in the Park, April 10, 4-6 p.m.

Come join us for a great afternoon at Desert Horizon Park (56th St. and Paradise Ln.) to play

games and have a cookout. Burgers and hotdogs provided, bring a side and/or drink, and your family and friends! Join us for playing some

flag football, ultimate Frisbee, basketball or volleyball! The weather is beautiful so come

enjoy it with us!

A note from Travis..."I would like to say thank you to Chaparral for

your continued support for the youth. Your prayers, your kindness, and your leadership do

not go unnoticed by the youth or youth ministry. It is an honor to serve and to grow alongside the

many wonderful teens here.  And believe me, this is a great group of teens! They are a real joy, and a

blessing to this Church as well as others.  I would like to mention the Stained Glass Teen Choir which,

as of the printing of this newsletter, has just returned from it's annual spring tour where students were welcomed and shown great hospitality by the Saints of St. Alban's Episcopal Church.  The students were so well-mannered and so well-received by the people of St. Alban's.  I will join in their appreciation for the talents of this great group of teens! In a Saturday night concert

and during the Sunday morning liturgy, the choir was a blessing."

Men's Retreat 2011: "Beyond Drill & Ceremony"

April 29 -  May 1 in Sedona, AZ

New recruits in boot camp, police academies, border patrol agencies, and many others, begin their training with drill and ceremony.  Drill and ceremony force the group to work together.  Everyone walks in step; everyone sings cadences in one voice.

After drill and ceremony comes the real training.  After drill and ceremony each recruit learns how to do the specifics of their job, and their commitment is put to the test.

The 2011 Men's Retreat is going to focus on discipleship - being a disciple of Christ while living neck-deep in the reality of life.  We're going to explore ancient practices of our faith that were used by earlier Christians in their attempt to serve Christ in their daily living.  We're also going to explore new practices to accomplish the same task for guys living in the 21st century.

Here's what you can expect:• Outstanding food brought to you by our team of Chaparral chefs• Quality discussion-driven teaching• Comfortable cabins nestled beside a calm river, deep inside a red rock canyon• Rest and relaxation for no extra charge • Hiking, horseshoe games, break-out classes, and naps included

Join the men of Chaparral on the 2011 retreat and move "Beyond Drill and Ceremony," and dive into the costly, yet rewarding, path of discipleship.

Chaparral’s Welcome TeamI am prejudiced, but I think one of the best ministries the Church has to offer is that of being an usher or greeter. Combined we call them the “Welcome Team.” The greeters began over twenty years ago. Early team members wore large badges with their names and “ASK ME” in big bold letters. Some of the original folks are still greeting after all these years. I think it is because they love people and know the importance of making others feel welcome. We formalized our ushers later to stand at the entry doors to greet and pass out the morning bulletins. Some of these folks do both on alternating months!

There are some really good things to be said about being on the Welcome Team. Those folks have the privilege of noticing new people when they come on our property. They make lasting first impressions as they assist families in finding classrooms for their children. They become the recognized “friendly faces” to those who are hoping to fit in to a new faith community.

Who can be a greeter or usher? Anyone! Adults and families with young children are encouraged to consider serving in this important ministry. Traditionally, there are groups of people who serve for a month at a time before one of the services with a two-month break in between. There is not a lot of training involved. Basically, you need a big smile, a welcoming manner and a commitment to be in place when you are scheduled to serve. Even our newest people can volunteer in this ministry.

Let us know if you would like to fill one of these important positions. We would love to welcome you on the team! Contact Mary Cartwright through the Church office or feel free to email her!

Mother’s Brunch Coordinator

Birthplace: Fargo, ND

School: ASU, B.S. Business Admin

Family: Don and I have one grown daughter, Kathryn

Hobbies: I have two hobbies that take up a majority of my

free time - the first is enjoying my husband's cooking. The

second is working off my husband's cooking by working out

at the Y!

Involvement at CCC: Joined CCC 14 years ago. I'll never forget

our first Sunday visiting - the people were so friendly and the music so good, we

knew this was the place for us! I've been involved in teaching Sunday School & women's bible study.

I also have a freshly earned "Certificate of Awesomeness" from Chaparral Crossfit!

Favorites: My very favorite thing in the world is teaching the CCC 2nd grade Sunday Schoolers -

past, present and future!

If you could be an animal, what would it be and why? I would want to be my cat - he's got it

made. He sends Don and I to work every day, then enjoys having the whole house to himself with

nothing to do but wake up from one nap just to take another!

Christian Family Care Agency's (CFCA) mission statement is, "Serving vulnerable

children and families in the name of Jesus Christ," and they are committed to doing so with

compassion, integrity and a sense of community. Over the years CCC has provided its

congregation with a number of CFCA volunteer opportunities such as hosting foster parent

appreciation dinners, providing foster children with Easter baskets and Christmas gifts and

honoring women who place their children for adoption with a Mother's Day brunch.

Several years ago I served at a Mother's Day brunch and was particularly touched in

observing an adoptive mother sharing photos of the adopted child with the birth mother.

The birth mother had arrived first and seemed a bit nervous. As you can imagine it takes

courage to show up at an event like this. She told me since placing her child for adoption

she had married and had a family of her own. However, as soon as the adoptive mother

arrived and they began to talk, it was priceless to witness how kind and caring they were

toward each other and how enthused they were about "their" child.

I'd like to thank all those who have volunteered to help with this event from designing and

creating nearly 200 handmade invitations to those who will be decorating, entertaining and

serving. Please know many will be blessed by this event and your service.

Our People in Our Community...Wayne Wertz, MDIf you’re looking for a “joke of the day” just ask Dr. Wayne Wertz. Every Sunday morning in the OK

Corral class, Dr. Wertz is assigned the task of relating a funny story. We all need to smile more and Dr. Wertz, an Elder of Chaparral, makes sure that we have some cheerfulness in our day of worship.

Dr. Wertz is a “retired” surgeon, i.e., he’s supposed to be retired but, at age 84 he still assists in surgery at Banner Thunderbird Hospital! During his service in the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII, he was distressed at seeing the suffering of soldiers, both foreign and American. Wayne wondered why there couldn’t be more medical help available for their recovery, both physically and spiritually. He, therefore, set himself firmly on the course to become a medical missionary.

Wayne wanted to serve in China, but Mao closed the borders to foreigners. Thus, his mission board sent him to a rural hospital in the foothills of the Himalayas. His two terms of service in north India from 1959 to 1969 turned out to be challenging, at times fun, and at times exhausting. A biography was written about his life and he hopes that readers will come to understand what led him to this calling and why he subjected his wife, LeAnn, and his children to a stressful life.

Wayne’s professor of surgery at Northwestern Medical School in Chicago told him that he was crazy to go on a medical mission. Why would a physician spurn a lucrative surgical practice in the United States for hard work in the northern hills of India where working conditions were unsanitary and infectious diseases abounded? The reason … Dr. Wertz was determined to answer the call of Jesus … to go and help people.

Near the end of his mission work, Dr. Wertz asked the biblical question, Do you really want to be healed? He asked that of his ailing patients and the ailing Christian church in India. The question has its basis in the profound words of Jesus, recorded in John 5:1-15, where Jesus asked a lame man, paralyzed for 38 years, if he wanted to get well. The lame man gave his excuse that no one would help him get into the healing waters and every time he tried, someone else would get in first. This prompted the question – Do you really want to be healed? – both physically and spiritually? The Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists in India have welcomed the medical expertise that many Christian doctors have provided over 150 years but, for the most part, they have rejected the proselytizing that naturally comes with evangelism.

Dr. Wertz continues to pose this question for each of us. Using his words, “In your own communities and churches, in your own families, and in your own lives, pray that you and others will be driven by the amazing power of our Savior and Healer to make men whole.” – Larry Gettman 7

In May, the Preschool is going to hold a used book sale to raise money for the American Indian Christian

Mission School in Show Low. If you have any children’s

or adult books in good condition that you would

be willing to donate, we will start taking them on April

4th. Thank you!

Thank you for all the prayers from our Church family during our

illness. Jack & Connie Jensen
