Motivation

Motivation is getting others to do something because they want to do it.

The process which encourages and guides behavior.

The act or process of stimulating to action, providing an incentive or motive, especially for an act.

Motivation is the internal drive to accomplish a particular goal. In a work setting, motivation is what makes people want to work.

INSTINT AND MOTIVATION

The term instinct is now replaced by the term “drive”, almost through out the world.

Current text books use the terms drive or motive for motivational variables.

Instinct and instinctive behavior

Instinct: The consummatory (concluding) phase of a motivated act, in which the ongoing behavior is finally ended.

Instinctive behavior: is the one or more sequences of motivated acts, including initiation (appetitive) , as well as the terminal phase.

According to Lorenz (1903-1989), the instinct is only a fraction of the instinctive behavior.

instinct is described as inborn and it is absolutely unchangeable.

Lorenz and Tinbergen; talked about FAP (Fixed Action Patterns) Examples; Male Peacock Dance, Graylag Goose (bringing back the egg), Humans, Cats (Yawning) etc.

Ethology: “the study of the behavior of animals in their natural habitat, usually proposing evolutionary explanations”

Action Specific Energy: Each instinct is assigned its own energy which is released by the Central Nervous system, only in the performance of the specific instinctive set

The behavior is continued till the goal is reached or the animal is exhausted.

Energy is released in hierarchical form including many upper and lower neural centers; making it a complex process

Release of energy is dependent on: Hormones External motivational impulses & Intrinsic motivational impulses

Sign Stimulus (SS)–Pre-programmed environmental event that will trigger a specific response. Also called “key stimulus”.

Innate Releasing Mechanism (IRM)

Neural mechanism (“hardware”) that is genetically determined.

It triggers behavioral response in the presence of SS. This dependence is however not very strict. In the presence of an additional stimulus, It may be a

conditioning case.

Fixed Action Pattern (FAP)–

If there is enough ASE and the SS is present, the organism will exhibit well-defined, species-specific behavior sequences.

Different individuals in a species produce nearly identical behavior to a SS. Once initiated, FAPs continue until completion. Or until exhaustion of the energy.

MOTIVATE SOMEBODY TO Learn or Earn The person may be a male/ a female of age not below 25 years He/ she should be known to one of the group members for about at least 5

years The presentation:

A written report with dates of sessions conducted with the person (Pictures if possible)

List and details of motivational concepts implied The list of mile stones achieved (learning; in terms of formal school

standards. Earning; in terms of cash income) The proofs of fund raising and providing financial help to the person The value addition of your project to the person’s life The comments of the person, the relatives and the group members A formal presentation in front of audience by all group members on the

motivational concepts

Written expression The report and its physical presentation The confidence and fluency of speakers of each group on each

topic The explanation to the questions of the audience with display of

humility & courtesy The value addition of your project to the person’s life (Did it help
