Activity for today: Prepare a speech

• Choose one of the following topics, and step-by-step prepare an outline for it.–Appropriate time for getting marriage.–Ways to get your ideal job.–How to plan a wonderful trip.–Ways to overcome stage fright.

Step 1. Prepare the Body

• First, list subtopics that you might include in your speech. brainstorming

• Second, narrow the list of subtopics. Rewrite the list and select 3 or 4 subtopics that best develop the speech.

• Third, order the subtopics logically. coherence • Fourth, develop each subtopic with factual

information, logical proof, and visual aids. outlining

Brainstorming

• Take a piece of paper. Brainstorm and write down every idea popping up in your mind for 3 mins. Then narrow down the lists to 3 to 4 ideas.

How to write a good outline (p.47)

• Each supporting point relates to the main point.

• Each supporting point contains only one idea.• Supporting points are not repeated or

Outlining the Body

• Order the remaining ideas logically, and add some details to each idea. Then write an outline for the topic.

Step 2. Prepare the Conclusion

• To summarize the speech.– Briefly reviews your purpose.– Repeats or restates the main ideas.

• To give final remarks – End the speech gracefully.

• A memorable concluding remarks would leave your audience thinking about what you said.

Step 3. Prepare the Introduction

• To give an attention-getting opener– Capture the listeners’ attention immediately.– Make the listeners interested in the rest of the

speech.• To preview the body– Alert the listeners to what they can expect to hear

in the presentation.– Help them to follow the information easily.

• Tell a story. Ask questions. Provide a startling fact.

Outlining Introduction & Conclusion

• Add a conclusion (a summary & final remarks) and an introduction (attention-getting opener & preview) to your outline.

Transitions between Parts

• Transitions tell your audience that sth new or important is about to happen in your speech.

• Transition after the introduction– Signal that the main part of the speech is about to

• Transition before the conclusion– signal that the speech is about to end

Write for the Ear

• Speech delivery style are different from cultures to cultures.

• The language and style used when making an oral presentation should NOT be the same as the language and style you use when writing.
