The Boys & Girls Club of Manchester had its original start in 1902 and was incorporated in 1907. The Clubhouse at 555 Union Street was constructed and occupied in 1957 and underwent a complete renovation in 2010. The Club, along with Camp Foster, has grown and changed with the times to evolve into the Club of today with a membership of 2,126 boys and girls, serving over 40,000 meals per year, servicing 120 kids at two school-based sites, and providing summer fun to 367 campers a day at Camp Foster. That legacy, and that level of commitment and impact to the youth of Manchester, couldn’t exist without your support.

The need for the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester is as great now as it ever has been. Average daily attendance is up 7% over last year and the Club operates at full capacity. Our theme this year is “CHANGING TIMES, CHANGING LIVES.” As we evolve to meet the changing needs of the youth we serve, our basic mission of changing and saving lives has remained constant...

“To reach out to all youth, especially those who need us most, inspiring them to realize their full potential as

productive, responsible and caring individuals.”

Under the leadership of our CEO, Diane Fitzpatrick, the Board of Directors is actively engaged and focused on key areas that include:

• Resource Development. Ensuring the fi nancial health of the Club by advancing philanthropy through individual giving, corporate outreach and alumni development.

• Community Impact. Taking a leadership role in the community to drive collaboration among other organizations that serve the community; particularly those that focus on youth.

• Staff Development and Infrastructure. Ensuring our staff has the training and resources to effectively accomplish our mission.

The Club is positioned to continue to succeed in its’ mission. We have strong visionary leadership, a fantastic staff, a healthy, engaged Board, and supporters that care about our success. From my perspective, our future couldn’t be brighter.

Our discussions and planning for the future of the Club are centered on our desire to serve and impact more youth through a necessary Camp Foster renovation, increased staffi ng to support more programs and addressing our capacity issue. There is still much to do and we cannot rest on our laurels.

Manchester is facing the current day challenges of a growing city. Investing in our youth today will provide the best possible return for our future. I am honored to be part of such a great organization that provides such a positive impact to our community.

As the conclusion of my fi rst full year leading this remarkable organization approaches, I am humbled by the generosity of the Board of Directors, Trustees, staff and so many other caring members of our community. This amazing family has positively impacted the lives of 2,126 Boys & Girls Club members, in ways we may never know, this year alone.

Although we live in a world of constant change, there is one thing that will always remain the same; children need love and guidance to help them reach their full potential in life. Today’s children will be the ones who determine the direction of change in the communities in which they live, work and raise their families.

Even in the 21st Century, our Club members face a host of barriers, much like what the children of the Industrial Revolution and the Amoskeag Mills faced decades ago.

What challenges are 21st Century kids in Manchester experiencing?• 53% of our city school children receive free and reduced lunch; 90% of those

children come from a family with an income 130% below the poverty line.• 40% of city children live in a single parent home. • 5% of the total student population is homeless.

Single parent families and dual income families are working longer hours and struggling to maintain the basic necessities of food, shelter and clothing for their families. Parents have fewer hours available to help their children with homework or participate in leisure activities that serve as a bonding agent for the family. In many cases, older siblings are denied opportunities to develop the social skills they need to navigate adolescence because they are acting as surrogate parents caring for younger siblings.

Although the Boys & Girls Club cannot completely eliminate the challenges facing the children of our community, we can provide a wide range of programs and services that give our kids the skills and confi dence they need to rise above their challenges and achieve their dreams.

So many children need help to thrive and grow. The Boys & Girls Club provides that support with homework help, mentoring, sports and recreation, art programs, access to computer technology, service and leadership clubs, and so much more. Each Club member is served a healthy afterschool snack and offered a hot, nutritious meal every day. Food insecurity is a challenge in our city, and we know without this meal, many of our members would go hungry.

Over time, one thing hasn’t changed. We are committed to the youth of Manchester and continue to provide a safe and positive place that inspires them to realize their full potential. Our vision for the future is to increase impact on the youth we serve by creating more programs and increasing our staff-to-member ratio; enhance Camp Foster to serve more kids; increase awareness of the Club’s mission within our community; and strengthen fi nancial resources to ensure that future generations have a quality Boys & Girls Club experience.

There are two things we can guarantee in the future. One, the scope and needs of our members will to continue to change with time; and two, we will continue to unlock the potential of our kids – regardless of where they come from and the barriers they face – by providing the best opportunities possible. The best way to predict the future is to create it. At the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester, we will continue – with your help – to create new and brighter futures for hundreds of young people each and every year.

Program ReportChanging Times, but Still Changing Lives!

In 1980 we were the Manchester Boys Club; now we are proudly the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester. In 1980 our average daily attendance was in the 200 member range; this past year the Club’s average daily attendance was 568. In 1980 the Club would close from 5:00-6:00 p.m. and send all of our members home for dinner; now we serve dinner to 200 members most nights. In 1980 we were open Tuesday through Saturday for members; now we are open Monday through Friday and focus on the latchkey child. As times have changed, so has our program to meet the needs of Manchester’s families and youth, but we are still changing lives.

The Boys & Girls Club of Manchester proudly provided the following services for Manchester families in 2014/2015:

Though times have changed, ask any alumnus – from 1980 or 2015 – and the response is always the same: “The Club was my second home, my family, and it changed my life.”

Youth of the Year

Luis Ortiz2015 Young Man of the Year

Luis is currently a junior at Central High School. He has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for the past seven years. The staff at the Club describe him as a respectful, self-motivated and hardworking peer leader. Outside of the classroom, you can fi nd Luis on the soccer fi eld serving as captain of Central’s soccer team. And if you don’t fi nd him there, then he’s probably at the Boys & Girls Club working in the games room, coaching in the gym or telling jokes in the cafeteria. Luis’ ultimate goal is to attend the University of New Hampshire to study physical therapy or sports management. In his essay on what the Club means to him, Luis said:

“The Boys & Girls Club has showed me how to become a leader and role model. Leadership has become a key role in my life, especially becoming soccer captain two years in a row. The Club has showed me that I can be anything I want to be.”

Arielys Liriano2015 Young Woman of the Year

Arielys is currently a junior at Manchester High School West where she serves as a member of the student council. She has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for eight years. Her teachers describe her as highly respected, hardworking and determined. Arielys is an avid fi x-ture in the Club’s learning enter and in the radio station, either doing homework or helping the younger members learn something new. With her dedication to the Boys & Girls Club through the Keystone teen leadership program, and her involvement in extracurricular activities at school, Arielys devoted more than 300 hours to community service last year. Her ultimate goal is to attend Yale, Dartmouth or Boston University to study education, business or law. In her essay on what the Club means to her, she wrote:

“Any time that I have needed advice or some kind of help, the Club has been my safe haven. The Boys & Girls Club of Manchester is the backbone that keeps me standing when life gets hard.”

The Heritage ClubMaking a Generational Difference

The Boys & Girls Club of Manchester’s endowment fund provides critical annual operating dollars for the organization in perpetuity. Heritage Club members are individuals who have informed us they have included the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester as a benefi ciary in their estate plans. Their kindness today sends a powerful message of hope to the children of tomorrow. In 2015, the Boys & Girls Club’s endowment fund increased by $667,000 due to realized gifts from Heritage Club members. Our sincere thanks to the following members of The Heritage Club…

Treasurer’s ReportFor the fi scal year ending June 30, 2015, total unrestricted revenues, gains and other support totaled $3,293,000 which includes $(173,000) of unrealized losses and approximately $707,000 of bequests (Heritage Club gifts and others). Expenses for the same period were $2,624,000, resulting in an increase in unrestricted net assets of $669,000. Unrestricted net assets in our operating fund decreased by $148,000, which excludes the investment returns and the bequests. The Club obtained diversifi ed sources of public support to ensure our programs and services will be available to our kids. Most notable is the continued generous support the Club receives from the Foundation of Friends annual campaign, our most signifi cant fundraising activity. Of our total expenses of $2,624,000, $2,004,000 (or 76% of the total) was spent directly on programs benefi ting our kids. The remaining $620,000 provided support services to sustain and fund our quality programs and the safety of the facility.

The Club remains fi nancially secure. Our endowment fund increased $838,000 for the year ended June 30, 2015 and totaled $5,584,969 as of June 30, 2015. Our Board of Directors prudently designates all bequests, whether or not donor restricted, as an addition to the Club’s endowment to sustain our future. Total outstanding debt was $572,000 at June 30, 2015. Our net assets totaled $11,074,000.

The Club’s management and staff continue to be great stewards of your fi nancial investment in the Club and your community. We appreciate the generous support we receive from the community in support of the young people who need us most. The return on your investment is seen in the more than 500 smiling faces served each day at our three locations during the school year and at Camp Foster during the summer months.

A Culture of PhilanthropyChanging Lives

It has been said that we each need at least one person in our life whom we simply cannot disappoint. It may be a parent, a teacher, a member of the clergy or a coach. This is the person we rely on to guide our moral compass and infl uence decisions that positively impact our life and the lives of those around us.

As a Boys & Girls Club donor, you bring this life-changing person to the children of our community. Your philanthropy creates a warm, safe environment where Club members learn and grow. Your generosity offers a broad range of programs and services that shape the mind, body and soul of children. Your support of the Club enables lifelong friendships to blossom between children and caring adult role models and mentors.

The Boys & Girls Club continues to be blessed with a remarkable family of individuals, corporations and foundations that care deeply about impacting the lives of children. The “Culture of Philanthropy” we seek to create throughout our organization is based completely on the individual relationships we build and the Boys & Girls Club mission. Inviting and welcoming the community into our Union Street Clubhouse is the most effective way of connecting to those who want to change the lives of youth in a positive way. Our Discovery Hour presentations continue to introduce the Boys & Girls Club to the community at large. The April Foundation of Friends Breakfast is the catalyst from which new donor relationships are born and then nurtured over time.

Members of our Heritage Club, who have included the Boys & Girls Club in their estate plans, and those who have joined our Jeremiah Milbank Society, annually supporting the Boys & Girls Club at a level of $10,000 or more, confi rm that our “Culture of Philanthropy” is growing and will continue to provide children at the Club with the one person in their life that they cannot disappoint.

Every individual, at every level of support, impacts the lives of our children. Thank you.

This report acknowledges, with gratitude, those who have

invested in the lives of the young people of the Boys & Girls Club

of Manchester through their fi nancial and in-kind support from

July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. We apologize for any

omissions or errors in listing or spelling. Please call the

development staff, (603) 625-5031, ext. 246, with any corrections.

Foundation of Friends Annual CampaignThe Foundation of Friends Annual Campaign raises unrestricted operating dollars to support the programs and services we provide to the children of greater Manchester. As part of this campaign, the Champions for Kids Society gives donors the opportunity to make a fi ve-year pledge to the Club at the $1,000, $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 level annually. Donors are also encouraged to support the Club at a level of their own choosing for a period of time that best suits their philanthropic wishes. As you can see, our friends continue to respond in a remarkable way...Thank you!

Grant PartnersGrants play a vital role in enabling the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester to provide programs and services that would otherwise go unrealized. Financial assistance, performing arts, special events and a wide range of education, leadership and character development programs would not exist without the support of grant funds. We are extremely grateful to these generous partners...
