CHANGING RELATIONS AT WORKPLACE
PRESENTATION BY :
SH. D. BHATTACHARYYA, ADVISOR (L&D), IFFCO LTD.
Lord Macaulay’s address to the British Parliament on 2nd Feb. 1835

“I have travelled across the length and breadth of India
and I have not seen one person who is a begger, such
wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral
values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we
would ever conquer this country, unless we break the
very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and
cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we
replace her old and ancient education system, her
culture, for if the indians think that all that is foreign is
good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-
esteem, their native culture and they will become what
we want them, a truly dominated nation”

ETHICS IN INDIAN CULTURE
NON-VIOLENCE – Not harming other people, being tolerant even for that which we dislike. Not speaking that which, even though truthful, would hurt others.
TRUTHFULNESS – Not intending to deceive others in our thoughts as well as in our words and actions.

ETHICS IN INDIAN CULTURE

ABSTENTION FROM GREED – Not coveting that which is not ours. Avoidance of unnecessary acquisition of objects.

ON INTELLECT, REASON V. HEART/ EMOTIONS/ FEELINGS
‘And certainly we should take care not to make the intellect our God; it has, of course, powerful muscles ,but no personality. It cannot lead; it can only serve; … The intellect has a sharp eye for methods, and tools, but it is blind to ends & values.’ …Sir Einstein
11
ON INTELLECT, REASON V. HEART/ EMOTIONS/ FEELINGS
The intellect is blind & can’t move of itself… It is an inactive, secondary help; the real help is feeling, love. Intellect is like limbs without the power of locomotion. It is only when feeling enters & gives them motion that they
move & work on others… It is the heart that takes one to the highest place, where intellect can never reach. It goes beyond intellect & reaches what is called inspiration’.
.…Swami Vivekananda
12
ON INTELLECT, REASON V. HEART/ EMOTIONS/ FEELINGS
• Even more important than knowledge is the life of emotions. Given knowledge and competence combined with folly, there can be no certainty of survival. It follows that unless man increase wisdom as much as knowledge, increase of knowledge will be increase of sorrow.
…Bertrand Russell

Wisdom Leadership Says Swarat Samrat Bhavati
(i)Swarat means who can exercise leadership on his own
(ii)Samrat means who can exercise leadership on others
Those who can exercise leadership on his own can exercise leadership on others.
In action what we see in them
(i) Priority to Role over self
(ii) Abiding by Cosmic rhythm
TRANSFORMING LIVES

Leadership Values 1. The real test of a leader lies in holding
widely different people together, along the line of their common sympathies. And this can only be done unconsciously, never by trying.
2. ‘It is selfishness that we must seek to eliminate’. I find whenever I have made a mistake in my life, it has always been ‘self’ centered into the calculation. Where ‘self’ has not been involved, my judgment has gone straight to the mark.’
TRANSFORMING LIVES
15
Leadership Values (continued)…
3. It is a very difficult task to take on the role of a leader. One must be a servant of servants, and must accommodate a thousand minds. There must not be a shade of jealousy or selfishness, then only you are a leader.
4. ‘Know partiality to be the chief cause of all evil.’
TRANSFORMING LIVES
16
Leadership Values (continued)…
5. ‘It is absolutely necessary to the work that I should have the enthusiastic love of as many as possible, while I myself remain entirely impersonal. Otherwise jealousy and quarrels will break up everything. A leader must be impersonal…..’
6. Do not try to lead your brothers, but serve them. The brutal mania for leading has sunk many a great ship in the waters of life.’
TRANSFORMING LIVES
17
Leadership Values (continued)…
7. ‘Be the servant of all, and do not try in the least to govern others…. Nobody will come to help you if you put yourself forward as a leader…. Kill ‘self’ first if you want to succeed.’
8. He who is the servant of all is their true master. He never becomes a leader in whose love there is a consideration of high or low. He whose love knows no end, and never stops to consider high or low, has the whole world lying to his feet.
TRANSFORMING LIVES
18
Leadership Values (continued)…
9. Not a single one of Lord Krishna’s deeds was done for himself. Every one of them was for the good of others. A true leader should follow the path of Lord Krishna.
Swami Vivekananda

Rituals and Dandaniti Rituals • It is a practical process of developing people’s
behaviour for collective consciousness. Dandaniti • It implies the provision for reprimand or
punishment for acts of indiscipline by followers. • It is like when the hand is beating, heart is
weeping • This is like Mother-Child relationship when the
child is beaten by the mother for doing wrong cause.
22
Charisma – Charisma of the Leader binds the followers.
Destructive Constructive
Hitler Mahatma Gandhi

1. A cause at present must produce an effect in the future.
2. An effect at present must have had a cause in the past.
3. The effect returns to the source of the cause.
4. Each cause produces its own effect, there is no mutual cancellation.
5. Like cause, like effect.
6. This law of cause and effect applies as much to a whole nation, a community, an organisation, a family as to an individual.
