Changing Perceptions
At the APA, we are working diligently to
change those perceptions. Even though they
don’t have a place to call home yet, our pets
are not sad. They are not
damaged, defective or sick.
They are happy, healthy,
adoptable pets who receive
top-notch care from staff
and volunteers.
From daily enrichment activities,
such as frozen peanut butter
Kongs® for the dogs and cat-
nip-filled toys for the cats, to
individualized attention and a
good, steady diet, you can see
the pets look and feel great.
The APA is currently
showcasing our pets
and our mission in a
happy, positive way.
We are taking better
photographs of
adoptable pets,
writing upbeat bios
on the animals and incorporating
social media in our outreach efforts.
We hope that by changing perceptions
we can increase adoptions, continue
to bring people and pets together
and eliminate the negative stereotypes
of shelters and shelter pets. •
How do you feel when you see images of homeless pets behind kennel
bars? Does your heart break when you see their pitiful eyes? As animal
lovers, those pictures are hard for us to see too, and we’ve discovered that it
does not help pets get adopted. Instead, it gives people the false perceptions
that shelters are sad, dreary and depressing places to be.

The APA is
often asked
to speak to local
civic organizations
about what we do.
I really enjoy
speaking with
these groups
because they give
me such a great
perspective on the
current viewpoint of the modern pet owner.
In the last year I have visited with Rotary
Clubs, Kiwanis’ Clubs, religious organizations
of all faiths, even college and high school
community service groups. It is always so
much fun to talk to these groups and hear
the stories of how pets have affected their
lives. The meetings usually run long, and in
the end, no one cares. The members stay
late, telling stories and reliving memories of
their best friends of here and past. None of
the standard barriers such as race, religion
or politics ever comes into play when talking
about pets. It is the universal friend-maker.
The consistent theme among the members is
that they all express great support for what
we do, but so few of them actually adopted
their pet from a shelter. While the perception
of our mission seems to be very positive, with
support crossing all the traditional barriers
that seem to prevent other agendas from
succeeding, the fact still remains that
less than 20% of all owned dogs and cats come from animal shelters.
Shelter pets are too often represented in the
media as unhealthy or behaviorally unsound.
These images fuel the negative perceptions
and hinder our ability to place these pets into
new homes.
It is time to start changing that perception.
As supporters of the APA, you know that all of
our pets for adoption are friendly, healthy and
just looking for a little love and commitment.
They arrived here by no choice of their own,
and they can only find a home if you give
them a voice. Summer is upon us and we are
once again bursting at the seams with dogs,
cats, kittens and puppies. If you cannot
provide a home for one of our homeless,
then please provide a voice for our voiceless.
Help us spread the message that shelter
pets make GREAT companions. They need
you now more than ever! •
Sincerely,
Steve Kaufman

Now in its third summer of use, the APA’s
PerPETual Motion Dog Parkcontinues to be one of the most exciting
improvements the APA has made to our
facility. Our volunteers and staff spend hours
every day working with our canines in this off-
leash environment to assure that they are well
exercised, well trained, and well mannered.
Potential adopters also love using our park to
allow their current pet to meet their future
new best friend in a neutral environment. All
of these features are important resources in
our ability to place our dogs into permanent,
loving homes. Need more proof of how well it
works? In 2011, less than 1% of all canines
adopted from the APA were returned!
This summer we were thrilled that the employees
at Swank Motion Pictures assisted in
adding 5 tons of pea gravel to re-grade our
play areas. We were also excited about the
lighting, ceiling fan, and electrical outlets
donated to our gazebo by Mid-America
Electric. Pet-friendly companies play
an important role in our success!
As with all physical improvements to the
APA, this too was a product of the huge
hearts of our pet-loving community. This
park was built entirely through donations
from the Gutzler family, the Peters family,
the Jouris Family Foundation and our
friends at Nestle Purina Pet Care! Future
additions include covered areas in the
exercise pens, adding a water source to
allow for sprinklers on hot days, and
additional agility equipment. If you would
like to learn about donating to this or
other exciting projects at the APA, please
contact Eileen Musial at [email protected] at 314-645-4610 x115. •

At the APA, we are always looking for
ways to improve our adoption areas.
We want our pets to feel comfortable
in their space and to have as much fun as
possible. Recently, we have made improvements
in the cat room and the changes have made a
huge difference!
With help from the M.L. ShannahanFoundation and John LeigersConstruction we built a "cat walk" that
extends the entire length of the cat room.
Our feline friends can climb stairs, gaze out
windows, perch on ledges and nap on shelves.
They love it!
While they still have access to plenty of food, water
and litterboxes, the cats are able to interact with
everyone who enters the room. They are able to
show potential adopters their personalities, which
increases their chances for a speedy adoption!
It’s already proven to be a success – several
cats that had been long-term residents have
been adopted because they won over visitors.
Maybe one day we will let them all run free!
Just kitten. •

The Future
The APA of Missouri is looking to a future filled withadvancing our technology and educational programs. With your help we will be able to complete our buildingrenovation which includes a remodeled front lobby, updated visiting rooms and a more spacious clinic. Our Educational Room will be expanded with greatertechnology to reach more kids and adults than everbefore with messages of kindness, safety and animalwelfare. No other shelter in the St. Louis area devotes
so much time and effort to strengthening thehuman/animal bond. Having these fundswould allow us to grow our Domestic ViolencePet Assistance program and our PetREACHanimal-assisted activities, it would allowus to reach more at-risk children andteens, offer counseling for pet owners and implement more programs tohelp pet owners in times of crisis.
Background
Investing in Bringing
People and Pets Together
Pics of the Litter
When the Clayton-based marketing and
advertising firm Brighton Agency told us
they wanted to help find homes for the dogs
who had been at the APA the longest, we were
thrilled! Working with professional photographer
Lynn Terry, 15 dogs got the star treatment.
Lynn’s photographs of the dogs were featured
on a website created by Brighton staffers to
highlight the dogs’ best traits. The campaign
was a huge success. All 15 dogs got adopted!
Home Game PSA
Rams Offensive Lineman Rodger Saffold may
look tough, but he’s really quite a softy when it
comes to pets! Last fall, Rodger filmed a Public
Service Announcement for the APA promoting
pet adoption. You can see the video and the
hilarious outtakes on our website:
www.apamo.org.
Pooches in the Ballpark
This was the fourth year the APA has participated
in Pooches in the Ballpark. The event, which is
sponsored by Nestle Purina and Schnucks,
allows ticket holders in a specific section to bring
their dog to a baseball game. We were on-hand
with adoptable pets who, before the game, were
escorted to the field where they played with
Cardinals’ players. Photographs were taken and
displayed during the game.
Magic House
On Saturday, March 3, The Magic House in
Kirkwood invited the APA to lend a “paw” at the
Grand Opening of their brand new Pet Clinic for
kids. We rolled up to the event with adoptable pets
on Homeward Bound, our mobile adoption unit.
The APA Humane Education Department provided
activities for the kids including microscopes for
learning about parasites and proper pet care,
and a giant board game about dog safety.
Three APA animals found their
forever homes that day, and
hundreds of kids learned about
the wonderful world of pets.
Thanks to The Magic House for
including us in this special day!
Cardinals/Cubs Rivalry Went to the Dogs
Recently the APA
challenged the
Anti-Cruelty Society
of Chicago to a
friendly rivalry. We
wanted to know
which city had the most love for shelter pets,
and asked everyone to show their loyalties by
donating to our organizations. The stakes were
high; the loosing shelter would be forced to name
its next 9 stray or unnamed pets after the winning
team’s starting lineup. It turns out St. Louis loves
its shelter pets most! We raised the most amount
of money, and it was great seeing pictures of
dogs in Chicago named Yadier Molina, Matt
Holiday and David Freese! •
It’s been an exciting year at
the APA! Here are just a few
ways we continued our
mission while shining a positive light
on shelter pets!

Thank you in advance for considering a
partnership with the APA and assisting in our
mission to help animals in the St. Louis area.
Being a sponsor of one of these events not
only supports our organization but provides
the following benefits to organizations
and corporations:
• Shaping consumer attitudes. Often
organizations are looking to improve
how they are perceived by their target
demographic. By sponsoring an event, the
sponsor can potentially influence the buying
attitudes of the guests and increase sales.
• Networking opportunity. Not only do
sponsors have the opportunity to build
awareness of their brand through effective
event sponsorship but the events also
provide a great networking occasion
for businesses.
• Creating positive publicity. Most events
achieve a lot of publicity, which is beneficial
for sponsors as they too are mentioned in
editorial and listings. They may also appear
in photos/images used for post event
coverage. This will also achieve visibility as
a good community citizen.
• Heightening visibility. Through all the
publicity; pre and post event, as well as
displays of logos and specific involvement
during the event, sponsors brand will not
be forgotten.
• Sales. The overall purpose of sponsoring
any event is to increase business and drive
sales of sponsor’s products and/or services.

HONORS AND MEMORIALS CONTINUED
IN HONOR OF:
Norman, a 12 year old Pug, and his 10 year
old friend Audrey, were dropped off at the
APA together and went home together just a
week later! Their new owner came in looking
for one, but fell in love with both. Norman and
Audrey are now running around their new
condo in Florissant! Mom says they act just
like puppies. Old and young, purebred
and mixed, the APA is sure to
have a new friend (or two!)
to warm your heart.

Launching spring of 2013 and on display
throughout the St. Louis area, these sculptures
consist of 10 dogs (Hanley) and 10 cats (Harry)
designed by local artists and installed in
prominent locations. This
amazing opportunity
to work with Harry Weber
will not only bring
awareness about
animal welfare but
will beautify our
community and help
send the message of
the adoption option!
A partnershipbetween localsponsors and artists
will transform this publicart project into reality. Weare looking to corporationsand individuals to give back to the community in a
creative way and to help raise money for theAnimal Protective Association. It also is an
opportunity for people in our community to take action. We hopepeople will view the sculptures, visit
our website and learn about petadoption and responsiblepet ownership. Any awareness we raise withthis project will help our
broader goal of promotinganimal welfare. For more information please contactEileen Musial @ 314-645-4610 ext. 115or [email protected]. •
Harry & Hanley Art Project
Measuring 4 feet tall and donning a coat
designed by local artists rather than fur,
we are fortunate to be working with
Harry Weber on a spectacular public art project. We
will launch these incredible one of a kind pieces of art as
part of celebrating our 90th year of bringing people and
pets together.
