02 | Changi Beach Club

At the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 26th June 2011, we were disappointed at the dismal attendance of merely 46 members. AGM is an opportune time for members to get a feel of the well-being of the Club and to seek clarification (if any) on matters concerning the Club.

Particularly at that Meeting, we addressed a member’s concern on our affiliation with The Grassroots’ Club (TGC). The main concern was the influx of TGC Members visiting our Club. We clarified that from our records, their visit per month is quite sparse and on average only three to four TGC members at any one time. However, there are still murmurs among our members in and outside the Club.

Our Land Lease will be expiring in Dec 2016 and we are already working very hard to secure an extension. While we are trying to reach the appropriate authority to negotiate positively to obtain the extension, we need to prepare our cause and one of them is a community outreach. We see this affiliation with TGC as another good avenue to increase the exposure of CBC since TGC’s membership of 3000+ comprises of grassroots leaders who are professionals and businessmen who have given much of their voluntary time serving the communities. We wish to reiterate that TGC members do not automatically mean just any member from any of the Community Clubs across Singapore. They must be a registered member of TGC. Hopefully with this explanation our Members can understand the rationale of the affiliation and would take kindly to visiting members from TGC. Their spending in our Club helps to increase our revenue as already evidenced especially in our chalet utilisation.

Immediately after our team took office in July 2010, our Chairman introduced “VISION 5000” whereby we embarked upon a membership drive by offering attractive discounts to entice new memberships, conversion from Junior to Ordinary members and giving an opportunity window for those who have missed out to convert at the age of 21 years old. We have not reached the eventual target of VISION 5000 as yet but we have had reasonable success. Regrettably, during

the same time, many members have resigned, resulting in a small nett increase of membership. The positive point is that our membership numbers are stabilised thus avoiding a dip in subscription income which may otherwise compel us to take other drastic measures to raise funds, for example increasing subscription fees like what a number of clubs have done. We are now promoting “Term Membership (Convertible)” at a very special price with an option to convert to Ordinary Membership at a later date. We came up with this idea in view of the limited time left of our current Land Lease. We look forward to your support to introduce members (member-get-member). For more information, you may contact our General Manager.

We have to raise funds for the lease extension! The drastic drop in Jackpot takings has adversely affected our bottom-line. Therefore, if every member can recommend a new member, we would have a great result.

By the time you read this message, the Club’s restaurant, Sea Bliss, would be in operation by the new caterer. As you may already know, Sea Bliss is operated by the Gim Tim Group of Restaurants who operates several other outlets including the Imperial Court located in TGC. This, I am sure have raised a few eyebrows. However, I wish to reassure all members that due processes were taken in our selection. In March this year, following our notice to the previous caterer to terminate their agreement, notices were posted on the Club Notice boards and members were invited to recommend operators and also an open invitation to outside operators to tender. As a result, three operators were short listed and after much deliberation and consideration, the Management Committee awarded Gim Tim Group of Restaurants. Besides being well known and reputed for their quality food, they expressed much keenness to take on the challenge. They have in fact taken pains to try to establish their outlet in our Club with unique signature dishes. We hope you have or will make an effort to try it out.

We have received complaints/feedback from our members and we have, and will continue to take serious steps to rectify

to our best ability but at times financial constraints may hinder our desires. We have also received compliments though in smaller numbers. For these, we thank them for the encouragement.

We are fully aware of our responsibilities when we took on the challenge. By assuming the Management Committee office, it does not mean that we are higher mortals than our general Members. We are sure there are many more capable people among our members who can do a better job. We are all volunteers and did not assume office for glory nor monetary gains. But we dare say that we have the passion for the Club and keen to see the viability and continuity of our Club beyond 2016. To this end, the top priority occupying our minds is how to get the extension of our Land Lease. We urge all our fellow members to bear with us and support us in whatever way you can, for example like introducing new members to take up the attractive “Term Membership (Convertible)” special offer.

On the brighter side of things, 2011 is fast coming to an end and our Social Chairman and staffs are now busy putting every effort in organising our CBC Annual Dinner & Dance on 31st December 2011 to usher in the New Year 2012. We are looking forward to your support for this main event of our Club and hope we can have an enjoyable evening together.

Taking this opportunity, The Management Committee and all staff of CBC would like to wish all members and families “Happy Deepavali”, “Merry Christmas” and “A Happy & Better 2012”.

Yours trulyTan Kia KamHonorary Secretary

“Caring for My Eyes” workshop by Dr Steve Seah (Optimax)On a relaxing Sunday afternoon, 17 July 2011, a group of 18 health-mindful participants attended an informative sharing session on how to take care of one’s eyes. The guest speaker, Dr Steve Seah shared with the participants on his vast experiences on eye related diseases and the possible solution for it. Though it was a short session, participants gained valuable information and have a better understanding of health of their eyes. The consultants also provided free optical eye tests and evaluation for the participants Interested in taking a more pro-active role in caring for your health? Look out for more up-coming workshops and talks.

1 Day JB Tour with Farm Visits and Durian FiestaOn 23 July 2011, a refreshing Saturday morning, 39 participants set-off at dawn for a day of action packed excursion. Nothing beats starting the day off with a hearty breakfast – Traditional Nasi Lemak. The first destination was an organic mushroom farm where our chirpy tour guide brought us around the farm for a short educational tour. Some of us even bought mushrooms and their special recipe flour.

The next destination was a newly opened bee farm specialis-ing in breeding local bees. We were told that these local bees do not have stings and were friendly to the people. We were amazed when the farmer demonstrated how the pure honey was able to generate energy to light up a light bulb! Great sales pitch as many of us bought jars of honey, not for lighting up our home but for the nutritional powers!

Finally, it was the much anticipated main highlight of the trip – Durian Fiesta Lunch. Baskets full of different grades of durians were made available for us to savour and we made fast work on them that many rounds of replenishment was made to satiate our cravings.

After the hearty meal of durian, it was time to burn some calories so we went on a shopping spree at the biggest shopping mall in Malaysia – Jusco Aeon.

The workout was satisfying as most of the shops were covered and many of us were carrying weights (loaded shopping bags) back to the bus! Now we were hungry again and we proceeded to a restaurant for a scrumptious seafood delicacies dinner which of course included the all-time favourites like chilli crabs, black pepper prawns and lots more. With stomach filled, it was time to head home and looking forward to the next trip.

Look out for the next trip and join us for a gratifying time!

National Day SwingOn 8 August 2011, a total of 47 patriotic participants gathered together and celebrated the Nation’s 46th birthday. Everyone was dressed in the colours of the National Flag. The participants danced their way all night long, played fun games such as ‘Chapteh’ and guessing the places and buildings of past and present Singapore shown on a screen. Cake cutting was done when the clock struck twelve midnight, 9 August – Singapore’s Birthday! The National Anthem was played and the participants sung along with gusto and recited the National Pledge with patriotism. The night ended with some lucky draws.

Aqua Aerobics Introductory Session With her qualifications & years’ of experience, Eunice Ler conducted the Aqua Aerobics introductory class for our members in CBC Swimming Pool. By incorporating some of her Yoga and Pilates teachings into the water exercises, she was able to provide a more holistic exercise routine as compared to other instructors.

On 20 August 2011 morning, ten participants tried out the routines for an hour. Feedback from the participants was that it was fun and most importantly, they found it beneficial.

Keep a look out for more of these events.

Social Tea Dance HOT FAVOURITE among members! On 21 August 2011, Social Tea Dance was held at the usual venue at the Chan Ah Kow Hall. It was a full house drawing a total of 150 participants. The participants danced to the music played by none other than the professional DJ Jason Tan. Besides dancing to the different genre and rhythm of the songs, participants got to gather with their friends for an afternoon of laughter, dancing, relaxation and catching up.

Due to the overwhelming response, some of the members were rejected and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the continuous support. Do register early to avoid disappointment for the next tea dance.

A combination of two in one event, the Autumn Festival Lantern Walkabout & BBQ Night was held on the evening of 10 September 2011, Saturday. The event drew about 120 party participants. Being a family event, small and big families, some with three generations gathered for the evening.

There was a thunderstorm in the late afternoon and continued to drizzle into the evening. But the drizzle stopped when it was time for the Lantern Walk! The children, who signed up for the walk, some with their parents excitedly lighted up their lanterns, which was included in their goodies bags. Once all were ready, they led to the main entrance to the Boardwalk. From there, they proceeded along the boardwalk gingerly with lanterns in their small hands, afraid that their candles may be extinguished and left in darkness. The walk took them all the way to the sailing point walk via cliff walk. It was a new, exciting and scary experience for some but most enjoyed the peaceful night sea breeze and listening to the night jungle life. Once all were back to the Club, the cloudy sky started to open again.

Those who registered for the BBQ night, gathered together at the Beer Garden and Beach Deck. But because of the on and off drizzle, most of them decided to seat themselves at the café. Everyone waited patiently for their portion of BBQ food like satay, stingray, chicken wing & squid. Despite the long wait for food, majority was understanding and enjoyed the evening with their family and friends.

The organisers would like to apologise for the delay in serving the food and will definitely improve for similar events in the future.
