Blessing Our NationRev Dr Suresh Rajan

I come from a family of patriots. When I was young I have heard many heroic stories, my mother told me about her brother who fought against the British to attain Independence. There were many who gave their lives for our country to become a

sovereign, independent and a republic nation. But as a matter of fact, India stands at 85th position out of 175 countries in the Corruption Perception Index now. There is no justice to marginalised and eco-nomically weak communities. The infamous presidential order signed by the then President of India on 10th August 1950 says that “No per-son who professes a religion other than Hinduism shall be deemed to be a member of the Scheduled Caste” which is against the very fabric of the constitution of India. So much of protests and representations were made in all these years, but no President had ever had the guts to withdraw that demonic order back till date. Rather irrational and barbaric attacks are made against peace loving innocent communi-ties. Churches are ransacked, Christian women raped, mass murders orchestrated by fanatic fascists in Orissa, Gujarat and other places and the list goes on. What can we do as a minority in this country? How can God bless this country? When I was pondering over these thoughts, my eyes fell on the scripture verse as found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble them-selves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land”. Our God wants to bless His people. The sole reason for this is: He is the creator. He created mankind in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). We can see many examples of his care and concern for us, from the first to the last book of the Bible. When Adam and Eve committed sin, he came in search of them. When Abraham obeyed God, He said “I will bless you and you shall be a blessing (Genesis 12.1-3).” And down the memory lane you will find that God kept his own people to be a blessing to many. The scripture verse for our medi-tation this month is also one among his many promises to bless us as a nation. If you look at the context of this verse, it was given to Solo-mon during the dedication of the Temple. God had warned the people that their disobedience to His Word and commands would result in dire consequences. To receive God’s blessings and to stay in it requires

for us to follow some basic principles. God does not promise blessings unconditionally. We may have done great exploits for God, conducted prayer meetings, donated liberally for missions, visited mission fields, built churches, but this is no guarantee that you will be a blessing to others. God did not give a blank statement to Solomon since he built a beautiful temple that He would bless their land without any condition rather he told the condition how His people should behave. I don’t believe in receiving blessing by following shortcut formulas. There are steps to follow in Christian life to be closer to God and to receive his favour. God has called us to be salt and light of the world. It is our closeness with God which is going to flavour this world. Sadly we who are called Christians have given a wrong signal to the world and ripped our reputation by failing to walk in God’s ways. We have taken our salvation experience for granted and clung on to cheap grace. In short we do what we are not supposed to do and do not do what we are to do. God calls us for a complete overhauling at this crucial hour. Let us examine as to what God expects from us in this passage to be a blessing to our nation.

1. A Call To Humility - When we humble ourselves to the Lord, we are acknowledging His Lordship and headship in our lives. We are admitting our weakness and reaching out for His power. In Joshua 5:13-15, Joshua was told to remove his shoes. This was an ancient way of symbolizing the relinquishing of control to another. Those who willingly humble themselves under the hand of the Lord open their lives to His blessings. It is not the same as telling in prayer ‘Lord I humble myself.’ It comes primarily by realising who we are and who God is. No one can force humility upon another and our humility is to be voluntary out of our self-realisation.

2. A Call To Prayer - Prayer is nothing but humility in action. The praying person realises his own inability and recognizes God’s ability. Prayer is an essential ingredient in the mystery of revival. In fact, our praying may seem weak, but it will yield far more fruit than the effort demands. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says ‘pray continually’. Therefore, let us determine that we will pray for revival till we see it in our lifetime. Pray in your homes, in your workplace, in your travel, in the prayer rooms and in the altars. Let us determine that we will take every moment of life as an opportunity to pray. We have covered a little about prayer in our last issue. We can say many things about prayer, but instead of talking about it, we should just do it. In NMS we have started a new department for ‘prayer mobilisation’ realising the need for prayer in our churches and institutions. Let us pray with fasting to

move the hands of God.

3. A Call To Pursue - A.W. Tozer said, “If we yearned after God even as much as a cow yearns for her calf, we would be the worshiping and effective believers God wants us to be. If we longed for God as a bride looks forward to the return of her husband, we would be a far greater force for God than we are now”. How true! We have been told to “seek His face”. The word ‘seek’ means ‘to desire something’. The idea here is that we come to a place where God is the number one priority and desire of our heart. Nothing in life is more important, more precious or more needful to me than having God and all He has to offer. Mar-cus Aurelius once said “The true worth of a man is to be measured by the objects he pursues”. Often we have many pursuits in life and are so fragmented in our devotions that we have no place for God in our lives. What is your ambition? Our priority in effect becomes our God. May we determine that we will have no other gods before Him (Exo-dus 20:3). May we decide that our love for Him will drive us to pursue Him with every fibre of our being.

4. A Call To Purity - The phrase “turn from their wicked ways” is self-explanatory. Our God is a holy God and no one can approach him without holiness. Therefore He wants His people to stop their sinning life style. Repentance is not basically a religious word. It comes from a culture where people were essentially nomadic and lived in a world with no maps or street signs. It’s easy to get lost walking through the desert. You finally say to yourself, ‘I’m going in the wrong direction.’ That’s the first act of repentance. The second act of repentance is to go in an alternate direction. Dearly beloved, we are to examine our lives, identify anything that does not please the Lord and eliminate that from our lives. The fact is, before revival can come to a nation, there must be repentance at every level. This is God’s command. “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). It is still God’s will for you and me today to become like Him and we should repent from our old lifestyle of sin. When we subject ourselves to follow the principles that God has laid down in His scriptures no wonder our nation will be healed by the Lord from all kinds of plagues that sickens and destroys the society. Let us seek God’s constant favour so that there will be justice and equality in our nation. May the Good Lord bless every one of you and bless our mother land. Happy 69th Independance Day to you all.

General Secretary’s Letter

Dearly Beloved in Christ, As I write this letter my heart is filled with joy for the great many things God is doing through NMS to bless the churches in In-dia. We have been received warmly by CNI, Lutheran and Methodist Bishops to have an active partnership with them in the life and minis-try of the church in the recent past. Please pray for the ministries of NMS. For the past 110 years we have by God’s grace functioned as a missionary arm of the Indian church and not as a para-church organi-sation.

Please pray that a revival will break out in our country. Let us not get disheartened with what we apparently see and hear every day about the problems that our missionaries and believers are facing in the form of opposition. While we pray for their safety, we hold on to the truth that our God is almighty and can do all things, and none of his purpose can be restrained (Job 42:2). It is our desire that every single solitary person in our nation will come under the saving knowl-edge of our Lord Jesus Christ and there will be a worshiping commu-nity in every village of our country.

We also need your helping hands as the ministries are expand-ing in spite of odds. All of a sudden like a boom our expenses have gone up. We are prayerfully planning to dedicate 110 missionaries during the 110th anniversary celebrations in November. We are work-ing hard to revive and renovate our hospital in CK Ashram, Tiruppat-tur. Prayerfully we are also planning to start a residential school with international standards there. We have appointed some highly quali-fied personnel in the headquarters to take care of the increasing work-load. I invite you to organise regular prayer meetings in your area for NMS and also raise money from your friends and relatives apart from your regular donations.

The following are some of the highlights of our ministerial journey in the last month:Executive Committee: We had our fifth Executive Committee Meeting in this trien-nium 2013-2016. Many decisions pertaining to the current develop-ment of NMS ministries were taken under the dynamic leadership of

our President Rt.Rev.Dr. Phillip Silas Masih, Bishop in Lucknow of MCI. We need your prayers to execute all the vital decisions taken.

Fasting Prayer: NMS, understanding the need of strategic prayer has opened the ‘Prayer Mobilisation Department’ to educate the Indian churches on the need of strategical prayers. Rev S B Chittaranjan is re-designat-ed as Prayer Co-ordinator. During 3rd and 4th July we had two days of ‘Prayer Summit’ to equip our staff and partners in Chennai and to pray for our nation at YMCA, Vepery, Chennai. We are thankful to Bro. Patrick Joshua, Rev. Raj and Mr. Joel for facilitating this summit. We are also grateful to Er M M Selvakumar, the President and Mr Asir Pandian, the General Secretary of YMCA for allowing us to conduct the summit in their premises.

East India Visit: We visited Mornai Tea Estate in Assam. We looked into the possibilities of starting some new ministry initiatives in this part of our country where tribes like Santali and Mundari live predominantly. These innocent people in this region are marginalised by the society. The Government has failed to recognise them as Tribals and thus they don’t get any legal rights in education and employment. God has placed a great burden in our hearts to do something for these voice-less people through some projects that can help the boys and girls in this area be benefited. We covet your sincere prayers as we seek God’s wisdom to decide on this.

Bengal Regional Conference of Methodist Church in India: My wife and I had the joy of participating in the BRC-MCI in the 32nd session of our annual conference. I shared about the current works of NMS in North India and our dreams and plans for the future. The pastors and delegates were very much impressed and promised to support the cause of NMS. God willing we will be involving in many joint programs to evangelise the East and North-Eastern India and to plant churches. We appreciate your prayers and involvement.

NMS Sundays: NMS Sundays were celebrated in the following places. We thank the Pastors and the Pastorate Committee members for their kind help and support to the ministries of NMS.1. CSI Santhoshapuram, Selaiyur, Chennai - 5.7.20152. CSI Good Shepherd Church, Coimbatore - 5.7.20153. CSI St. Paul’s Church, Chrompet, Chennai - 12.7.2015

Tables Turned!– A Reflection from the Life of Queen Esther

Dispatches were sent by couriers to all the king’s prov-inces with the order to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews….on a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods. … The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was bewildered. (Esther 3:13-15) …..Nearly an year later…..A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so that the Jews would be ready on that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. ….. And the city of Susa held a joyous celebration. For the Jews it was a time of happiness and joy, gladness and honor (8:13-17). On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the edict commanded by the king was to be carried out. On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but now the tables were turned and the Jews got the upper hand over those who hated them. (9:1)

The book of Esther explicitly does not have the name of Yah-weh written in it. But the implicit content of the book is the power of the Yahweh God. What I am undertaking here is a puny perspective of a gold mine and treasury of God’s wisdom in the whole of the book of Esther. There were three prime characters involved in this powerful story most of us are familiar with. One was not alive when the climax scene happened. It is he who I am going to bring out first because it was he, who gave a supreme climax to the story!

Problematical Haman Though superficially the problem brought forth by Haman looked like it was against a man at the gate of the place named Mor-decai, intrinsically it was against a nation, a people group. (3:5-6, 4:1-3). Even today our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. This month we celebrate the independence our nation enjoys from foreign rulers. But truly there is an upper-hand attitude of the major-ity-faith-believers of our nation against us. The Christian minority remains foreign to the present rulers of our nation. Like Paul, how

are we going to fight a good fight for our faith in the Indian context?

Resourceful Mordecai The resourceful person for bringing freedom for the Jews was Mordecai. His counsel at the right time to Esther was like golden apples in settings of silver (Proverbs 25:11). He told Queen Esther, his adopted daughter (who had come to that position by obeying his counsel), “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?” (4:13-14). When people faces crisis with regard to faith, we need to listen to the coun-sels of God. Out of the many, one counsel stands out: “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chron-icles 7:14) Interestingly Esther did exactly this.

Prayerful Esther If at all there could be one word for the turn of events in the struggle for lives in this historic Jewish event, it was “prayer.” Read her reply to Mordecai: “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” (4:16) Esther initiated a prayer movement. She mobilised a prayer cell in her women’s domain. She could do this boldly in a place, a palace, where Yahweh’s name was prohibited. Esther believed in prayer and that too corporate prayer. What is your excuse for prayer today?

The spiritual culture of fasting for nation is slowly weaning in the Christian context today and that is why we have an upheaval of problems in our churches and our country. To fight a good fight for our faith, to turn the tables, we need to turn to the Bible and increase our prayer initiatives. Powered by prayer, Esther received favour in the eyes of the King. We too will receive favour in the eyes of our King of kings and our local rulers and authorities through our prayers. In Esther’s story, not only the problematical Haman, even his family, his supporters paid the cost for scheming against the people of Yahweh-faith. They had a tragical end. Haman fell into the same pit which he had dug for the Yahweh-worshippers. The stone rolled back on him (Proverbs 26:27). He was hanged to death on the same

gallows which he had erected to execute Mordecai (7:10). The key is our dependence on God through prayer. The wailing of the Yahwistic Jews turned into dancing; HE removed their sackcloth and clothed them with joy (Psalm 30:11), HE gave Esther and Mordecai crowns of beauty instead of ashes, oil of gladness instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair (Isaiah 61:3). God still can turn the tables upside down in our situations. Let us bless our families, churches and nation through our upright living and prayers. Happy Independence Day!

Maharashtra Visit – A Report I started my journey to Maharastra on 15th June 2015. The same day I had planned for a meeting with our missionaries, Mr. Umancharan Singh and Mr. Ashish Kumar Suna at Pune. Both of them came and we had a brief fellowship. They shared their testimo-nies and our Lord’s doing in their ministry fields. Mr. Ashish Kumar said that he is conducting prayer meetings in three places and overall 230 baptized believers are gathering together for worshiping our Lord. He shared his concern to help him to construct a church. The village head man is willing to offer his land as donation for NMS. This he does in reciprocation for a great miracle God has done in his family. He also mentioned that he has identified three persons who are willing to work as missionaries in Maharastra.

Mr. Umacharan Singh said that in his place nearly 40 to 65 persons are gathering every Sunday to worship our Lord Jesus Christ. He said that the people who found Jesus through his ministry are now worshipping in various congregations. So he expressed his need to have a church building in Shiroli. Mr. Umancharan also told that the land value is increasing because of many industries developing in the town. Many labourers migrate here. So there is tremendous opportu-nity for ministry.

I had the privilege of meeting with the Bishop of Pune dio-cese, Rt.Rev. Andrew B. Rathod, the Bishop of Marathwada diocese, Rt.Rev. M.U.Kasab, the Bishop of Nasik, Rt. Rev. Pradeep L. Kamble and the Bishop of Nagpur. All four bishops keenly listened to the ministry of NMS. They expressed their willingness to lend their hands to support NMS, to build God’s kingdom in their respective dioceses. Praise God!

Missionary Diary

I am Jacob Dayanandan. My father is a retired Head Master. In 1983, I was suffering from a mysterious fever. Due to that I was not able to sleep and eat. My father admitted me in the CMC hospital, Vellore. I was not healed even after the treatment given by the doctors. Doctors said that only God can help me in my situation. My parents prayed to God earnestly with tears for my healing. During my college tenure at Voorhees Col-lege, Vellore, I was living an ungodly life. My parents were thinking that God had punished me because of my sins and were praying to God for my salvation. God forgave me and healed me in September, 1989. I accepted

Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour immediately after reaching home from the hospital. I committed myself to the Lord to live single, without mar-riaging like missionary Sadhu Sundar Singh and Apostle Paul. I as-sured to my Saviour that I was willing to carry his cross. I did ministry, faith-based for seven months in and around my native village. After that I joined as a missionary in NMS through Rtd.D.E.O, Mr. Albert in 1984. My first mission field was Basai near to Jhansi im North India. I could bring six people to Christ during my brief stay there. I then came down and worked in Kolli Hills, Jawadu Hills and Naickanur. I could win many more souls for Christ. However my tenure as mission-ary in Pondicherry was all the more fruitful. I worked for six years in and around Pondicherry and was able to baptize eighty-nine people. My present mission field is Kavalur. Kavalur is a village in the Jawadhu Hills in Tamil Nadu. The village hosts the Vainu Bappu Observatory. It is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. As per the 2001 census, Kavalur had a total population of 1010. The literacy rate is approximately 50 percent. In such a strategic place, by God’s grace I was able to lead five families to Christ already! I have a target to win 1000 souls for Christ before I retire from NMS. Till my last breath I would remain as an evangelist. Christ is my Life! Death is my Gain!!

NMSI NEWS Aug-2015 30

ReporterSanctity is the only Strategy! In the recent Prayer Summit held in Chennai, the former General Secretary of Friends Missionary Prayer Band (FMPB), Patrick annan started off saying that priority for prayer should be above our food, dress, rest and even ministry. Prayer depicts our dependence on God and so he said that we have to take it seriously. It is the fabric of our society. God preserves people’s lives through prayer. A tithing concept in prayer could be followed. In that case we need to spend 2 hours and 40 minutes purely in the presence of God daily. Joel Annan awakened the audience on the following issues: Idolatry, Prostitution, Guruism, Terrorism, Corruption, Addiction to Alcohol and Drugs, Mass media pollution which enabled every one to pray with burden and tears. Rev Raj while he spoke about holiness in a minister of God he said, “Sanctity is the only Strategy”. He explained the life of Asa, the King of Judah. Out of the many useful insights, one was that God was not pleased in success through human strategy in the life of Asa without his true dependence on him (2 Chronicles 16).

Jesus is truly God! Our missionary, Bro Ravichandran reports two incidents: “Venkataraman Reddy was a devotee of Saibaba. He was filled with pride because of his status in the society. He had bitterness towards Christians. He hated them and had a biased opinion about them. I had a chance to converse with him for an hour about Christ. He replied to me saying that if Christ is a big God whether He would be able to bring rain in their drought-hit place. I challenged him to accept Christ and said that He would give rain. The next day there was a great out-pour of rain! He rang to me to say that Jesus is truly God.” “The second one is about the healing God gave to Ludhiam-ma’s father who was suffering from TB. The family members took him to many hospitals, worshipped many gods, and finally gave up. While he was in the grip of death, I happened to meet him. I asked them to place faith in Jesus. After four fasting prayers in the month, we could see a healing in him. A man who did not eat for long, started to eat! A man who was bed-ridden started to walk! He also made a promise a live a new life in Christ.”

NewsLONDON: A diet rich in fruits and vegetables packed with vitamin-C will substantially cut the risk of heart attacks and early death, says a study. Vitamin C helps build connective tissue and is also a potent antioxidant that protects cells and biological molecules from the damage which causes many diseases, including cardiovascular disease. The human body is not able to pro-duce vitamin C, which means that we must get the vitamin from our diet, said the study that appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. “Eating a lot of fruit and vegetables is a natural way of increasing vitamin C blood lev-els. You can get vitamin C supplements but it is a good idea to get your vitamin C by eating a healthy diet,” added Boerge Nordestgaard from University of Copenhagen. (The Hindu, July 8, 2015)

WASHINGTON: Spending more leisure time sitting is associated with a high-er risk of multiple myeloma, breast cancer and ovarian cancer in women, a new large-scale study led by an Indian-origin scientist has found. The study, how-ever, found no association between sitting time and cancer risk in men. While extensive research links physical activity to cancer prevention, few studies have examined the link between sitting time and the risk of specific cancers. (The Times of India, July 15, 2015)
