Chancellor’s Graduate and Professional Student Advisory Board

Mission StatementThe UC Davis Chancellor’s Graduate and Professional Student Advisory Board (CGPSA) works closely with the chancellor to improve the experiences of graduate and professional students on the UC Davis campus. The board provides the chancellor with meaningful insight into the lives of graduate and professional students and develops specific recommendations for actions the chancellor can take to enhance campus community, diversity and educational opportunities. CURRENT PROJECT

The Interdisciplinary Graduate and Professional Student Symposium (IGPS) is an opportunity for graduate and professional students to share their work with each other, the campus, and the wider community. The primary goals of IGPS are:

• To showcase the scholarship of UC Davis’ exceptional graduate student population for the UC Davis campus community, and the broader community at large – the Davis community, the Sacramento region, and the broader University of California.

• To foster interdisciplinary interactions and collaborations among UC Davis graduate and professional students.

• To provide a space for graduate and professional students to learn about graduate student resources on issues including (but not limited to) mentorship, work/life balance, diversity and cross campus connections.

Sessions will include talks, posters, art and performance exhibitions, and graduate student organized sessions. The IGPS will take place from April 21 through April 23, 2011 and all are welcome! For more information visit our website: http://gradstudies.ucdavis.edu/about/igps.html

SPOTLIGHT

Graduate Ally CoalitionMissionThe UC Davis Graduate Ally Coalition (GAC) was formed in 2008 with the central purpose of training members of the graduate student community to serve as resources for their peers. GAC seeks to enhance access, awareness, and availability of campus resources and information to students and groups who may experience oppression, harassment, or isolation due to race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, ability, age, language, nationality, socioeconomic status and/or religion/spirituality. GAC works to facilitate a process for graduate students to empower themselves and their colleagues to have a more successful and positive graduate school experience.

Goals• To facilitate an annual training for a Cohort of graduate students representing a wide

array of departments and graduate groups each year. In this training students will begin to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to provide informational support and resources to their fellow grads

• To continue the process of ally development with each Cohort through a series of campus trainings and conversations.

• To put on programs and events that empower, inform and educate graduate students.

PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Fall 2010 - conducted training of graduate students for every department and professional school so that they can be a peer resource to others in their fieldFall 2010 - facilitated follow up event to get trainees involved in the discussion on how to better continue becoming allies to one another as grad and professional studentsWinter 2011 - hosted Community Potluck to establish connections across disciplines and differences to build a stronger and more allied graduate student community

Spring 2011 - Currently organizing "Grad Meet Ups" to invite grad and professional students to meet up together and attend various culture weeks events with one another, and concurrently organizing next Fall Training.

A Message From UC Davis’ New Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

I'm Ralph Hexter, and I have the privilege of serving as UC Davis's provost and executive vice chancellor. I began my service in this position, and indeed my membership in the UC Davis community, on January 1, 2011. The University of California, however, is not entirely new to me, for from 1995-2005 I was a professor of Classics and Comparative Literature and then successively chair, dean, and executive dean at UC Berkeley. I am enormously pleased to be returning to California and to one of its greatest institutions, UC Davis. Every day I feel I get to know the campus and our community a bit better, learning ever more about the rich resources of our university.

As provost and EVC, I am the campus's chief academic and operating officer. In this challenging economy, my goal is to continue developing the resources necessary to maintain and further UC Davis' national and international standing in research, teaching, and public service. This involves all aspects of our campus: the academic foundation, physical environment, and administrative infrastructure.

The heart of our university is its staff, faculty and students. I sincerely believe that the combined efforts of these groups create an optimal environment in which to work, teach, and learn. A walk (or a bike ride) around our campuses - Sacramento and Davis - confirms this, and I encourage you to fully explore all quadrants of both. In Davis you may wish to take in the beauty of the seasonally changing Arboretum, explore the just-completed addition to King Hall, which houses our School of

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter

Law, or view the construction activity on the site of our new Student Community Center. In Sacramento, you will find that the UC Davis Health System campus is a vibrant hub of learning, research, and healing that is home to the School of Medicine, the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, and the UC Davis Medical Center. Everywhere you look, you see evidence of the commitment and Aggie spirit that defines our campus community and our efforts to better the world around us.

A future of promise and change lies ahead, and, as we move forward, I hope to hear from you, pledging to listen closely, speak honestly, and lead with both heart and mind.

Sincerely, Ralph Hexter - Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
