DATO’ VINCENT LIM

Dear Readers,

It has been an eventful first half of the year for MACEOS and we are definitely

on the right road towards bringing the business events industry to a whole new level.

Last month, we had our Annual General Meeting where there was a historical signing of an MOU between SACEOS and MACEOS. The MOU was a collaboration to conduct the Train the Trainer programme that is part of the association’s plan to provide training and education to enhance the skills of the Malaysian business events industry. This programme has received positive feedback from the industry and we hope to have more programmes of this nature to encourage skill upgrading within the industry.

I attended the UFI Open Seminar in Hong Kong with 14 of our members and we enjoyed networking and exchanging industry knowledge and ideas with our counterparts across the region. I was honoured to be publically mentioned for being the only delegate to attend each and every seminar for the last ten years without fail. Through that mention there was recognition given to MACEOS and our association bringing our Malaysian business events industry into the spotlight.

President, MACEOS

PRESIDENT’S NOTE

The BE Magazine is now in its third issue and in this issue, the President of AFECA is featured as one of our main stories. Mr Walter Yeh describes Malaysia as one of the most important MICE destinations in ASEAN. Therefore, there is no surprise that Malaysia was picked to host the inaugural AEC+EXPO 2015. MACEOS is very pleased to be a part of this journey that will aim to change the course of the Malaysian Business Events industry for the better. Also in this issue, you can read about the industry dialogue with a focus on exhibitions that I recently chaired to discuss the different challenges faced by members. It proved to be a fruitful platform to hear experiences and issues faced in the industry and MACEOS will make a concerted effort to address and iron out issues faced with the relevant parties.

Once again, like to thank the editorial team for a job well done. I would also like to thank all the advertisers and members who have been supporting this publication from the start. The success of this magazine could not have been achieved without your continued encouragement and support.

Here’s to the onward success of the Malaysian business events industry!

Happy Reading!

The last few months since issue two of BE Magazine have been a busy

time for all of us in MACEOS.

The education committee has been making real progress on the targets set in May, 2014. Already the trainers for the Train the Trainer programme have been through the necessary training to allow them to deliver the Professional Exhibition Management (PEM) and the Professional Conference Management (PCM) which we plan to start rolling out later this year. Thanks to Kenneth Fong the Chairman of the Education Committee for making this a reality, at last. Moreover, the education committee has also finalised the template for the NOSS course in Exhibition Management with JPK and so things are really moving along.

This month’s edition also gives a platform for some of the key exhibition organisers in Malaysia to voice out their concerns for the industry moving forward, you can read what they have to say on page 14. Clearly, engagement with the Government via our key partner The Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MYCEB) is a common thread within this dialogue and MACEOS will of course take this on board and continue to work hand in hand with MYCEB for the betterment of the Business Events industry in general.

Later this year Malaysia will be proud to play host to the inaugural ACE+ Exhibition and Conference which will run at KLCC from 11-13 November. Jointly organised by The Asian Federation Of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA) and MACEOS, this inaugural exhibition and

In conjunction with AEC+EXPO, The Malaysian RAWR awards will be back for its second edition and also the AFECA awards dinner. MACEOS also plan to debut the PEM course during that week so those few days in November are going to be action packed for the Business Events industry!

We would also like to introduce in the third issue of BE magazine a feature on our new members. As you know, our mandate is to continue to grow the membership in our association and so this special feature, which will now become a regular feature in our quarterly magazine, aims to highlight the new additions to the MACEOS family.

So I hope you enjoy the read and Selamat Hari Raya to you all.

Getting to know AFECAA chat with Walter Yeh, President , The Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA).

The Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations, AFECA was

officially registered with the Singapore Registry of Societies on 25 January 2005. Prior to its registration, an assembly meeting was held in Singapore on 21 September 2004. The assembly was attended by association representatives from China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. Today, the association is headed by Walter Yeh from TAITRA, Taiwan. He spearheads the association while staying true to AFECA’s long term vision to be a strategic partner in the creation of a world federation representing the exhibition and convention industry in Asia.

Walter Teh sits down with BE Magazine to outline how AFECA plans to act as a vehicle to shape the destiny of the business events industry in Asia.

Can you share with the BE Magazine readers some history of AFECA and what do you consider its primary role in the MICE industry? The Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA) was established in Singapore in 2005, with a mission to promote and enhance the MICE industry in Asia. AFECA is currently the leading MICE association in Asia and with access to other global MICE associations, AFECA is the gateway for Asia to reach out to the rest of the world.

How has AFECA changed and evolved over the last ten years? From its establishment in 2005, AFECA had a total of seven founding members, covering East and Southeast Asia. Over the past decade, we have expanded to over 120 members in 17 nations/regions over all of Asia. Our membership

Mandarin Oriental, KUALA LUMPUR, AN EXQUISITE CHOICEOffering a prestigious business events location in the heart of the capital, BE Magazine speaks to Frank Stocek, General Manager of Mandarin Oriental.

Operating at the highest possible standards is the only way General

Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, Frank Stocek knows how to function. Staying true to Mandarin Oriental’s guiding standards, Stocek has been living and breathing the hotel industry for over 31 years now. “You could say I was born into the industry. We had a family restaurant in Canada for many years and I learnt the ropes there.” Although born in Austria, Stocek spent most of his growing up years in Canada. He joined the Mandarin Oriental Group in 1983 and the rest, as they say is history. “Since then, I have lived and worked in

Jakarta, Hong Kong, Surabaya, Macau, Bermuda and Kuala Lumpur.”

When asked what was so special about the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, the General Manager of three years smiled and gestured towards the magnificent view of the Petronas Twin Towers and the city down below. “You can’t do better than this,” says Stocek. Indeed, guests can enjoy a front row seat of the magnificent towers from the club lounge as well as from the guest rooms. However, above all, it is the exquisite service that the brand is based on that makes this hotel stand out above their competition.

“We definitely offerthe most distinctive meeting address inthe capital.”

Business Events at Mandarin Oriental“Business events make up 15%-20% of our business,” explains Stocek. He also describes Mandarin Oriental as a purpose-built building accommodating 3500 square meters of space to hold various functions, conferences and exhibitions. “Our banqueting centre is fully capable of handling a large number of guests at any one point and our F&B quality is never compromised even with the large numbers.” Events contribute to 40% of the hotel’s F&B revenue, thus the hotel has a keen focus on its F&B outlets and catering services. “Not only are the business events facilities we offer at par with the best, you can be rest assured you will be served a cuisine prepared by our award winning F&B crew.

Stocek explains that Mandarin Oriental prides itself with the fact that they are efficient, modern and able to cope with any request offering unmatched business services. “We definitely offer the most distinctive meeting address in the capital,” he confirms. Apart from its strategic and commanding location, the venue offers logistics and service at its best. “One of the most convenient and

distinct features is the large loading bay and lift that connects directly to our ballroom.

The hotel has played host to various Royal functions, exhibitions and conferences. “We have miles of red carpet and our team are well versed in Royalty protocol.” Stocek is quick to admit that the business events success of the hotel is very much dependent on their dedicated team. “Our have proven themselves time and time again and they are passionate about the brand and what we stand for,” admits Stocek.

“When you choose Mandarin Oriental to hold your business events, you can rest assured that every detail will be taken care of from start to finish.”

Malaysia, A Business Events Destination Political stability, ease of communication, wide internet connectivity, safety, cultural diversity, abundant tourist attractions and friendly people are only some of the various reasons that Malaysia is fast becoming a business events hub in the region.

“Malaysia has so much to offer as a business events hub.” Stocek feels that Malaysia should be proud of themselves and should embrace the role as a leader in business events here in the region in line with its competitors like Thailand and Singapore. That said, he agrees that there is always room for improvement, for example the availability of more space for business events. He also expresses his concern over some of the off-site locations that are in need of refurbishment. “Some of the areas of improvement include upgrading off-site historical and cultural locations.” explains Stocek. “I hope the relevant parties will restore locations that make Kuala Lumpur such a special location.”

Receiving constant rave reviews on Tripadvisor, Mandarin Oriental is most definitely an icon in Kuala Lumpur. It is therefore no surprise that the hotel and the brand is a popular choice for business events and more, never ceasing to satisfy anyone that walk through their doors.

A thriving industry, with a huge potential for further growth, the business

events industry is a keen contributor to the Malaysian GDP.

Chaired by the President of MACEOS, Dato’ Vincent Lim and held at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, the industry round table dialogue proved to be a productive platform to exchange ideas as well as concerns between exhibition organisers’ industry leaders. The Malaysian Business Events industry is not without its challenges and those who know this best are the industry professionals themselves. During the first industry dialogue initiated by MACEOS, various challenges were addressed and there were interesting debates and

Themed, Innovations - The Way Forward, this highly anticipated expo

will be the first trade initiative by way of exhibition to integrate the public and private sectors within the region and globally to form strategic partnerships between businesses to contribute to the development of the ASEAN economy and to accelerate opportunities available. Malaysia is identified as the ideal host of the inaugural installation of AEC Expo, taking into consideration its strategic location in the heart of Southeast Asia as well as ease of communication and doing business. Apart from Malaysia being the Chairman of AEC 2015 and the host of The ASEAN Summit for 2015, The Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) has been identified as the local organiser as an affiliate member of AFECA as well as the local leading exhibition industry association.

MACEOS is delighted to be the official organiser of the expo in Malaysia and hopes that all industries concerned will come out to support the event in full force. According to Jonathan Kan from Fairs and Events Management, this expo is an important turning point for Malaysia, helping local

“It will be the first time we will host this type of gathering and local industries will be exposed to leading professionals who will be present to give talks and exchange ideas.” Kan also explains that the three day expo will include simultaneous events that will end with the coveted RawR Awards. Part of the activities lined up also include, AEC + Forum, Inter universities competition – 60 universities from Asia, Golf Tournament – The AFECA Cup and Hosted Buyer Business Matching. There is no doubt that the expo is a golden opportunity for the local MICE industry to secure more foreign buyers.

Strategic Acquisitions In the Asian Region

The level of M&A activity over the last few months involving Private Equity firms is unprecedented. Since my last column there have been more PE backed deals and we wonder who will be next…

Firstly, we have the sale of UK based CloserStill Media to Inflexion Private

Equity in a deal valued at £127 Million which represented a multiple of 18x 2014 Earnings before Interest and Tax – the highest multiple paid for any exhibition business in recent year. The sale process, with DC Advisory and Mayfield Media as co-advisors, was very competitive. CloserStill, focusing on content-driven Healthcare and Technology events, is one

of the biggest recent success stories in the UK exhibition market and has seen the company expand into France, Germany and Asia through both event replication and acquisition.

We will also have another new entrant into the world of exhibitions as Charterhouse Private Equity Partners move into exclusivity for the acquisition of a 50% stake in leading French exhibitions group, Comexposium. Their co-owner, commercial property investment company Unibail Radamco will exit, leaving the French Chamber of Commerce as the 50% partner in a deal that values Comexposium at 550 Million Euros.

Given that the common premise of all Private Equity firms is investment, growth and then exit, it is self evident that we will see a lot of acquisition activity over the

Recent Acquisitions and Partnerships

next couple of years as the fastest way to add portfolio value and this will add to the general M&A momentum, which is currently surging both in terms of the number of deals and the multiples being paid.

Each organisation will have a different strategy. Comexposium will be focusing on developing business outside France initially in markets where they already have established business such as China but also a number of new markets in South East Asia. CloserStill Media are specifically focused on healthcare (linked to Continuing Professional Development requirements) and technology and their acquisitions will reflect this.

In recent months M&A activity has been focused primarily on the UK and USA but I expect Asia to feature more in coming months.

In line with the MACEOS education blueprint a group of like- minded

volunteers from both the conference and exhibition industries have put themselves forward to take up the challenge of delivering the Professional Exhibition Management (PEM) and Professional Conference Management (PCM) to the Malaysian industry.

These courses that were developed painstakingly by their sister association in Singapore, the Singapore Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers

Maceos trainers Take Up The ChallengeIn a bid to upskill the business events industry, select MACEOS members have taken on the role of being professional trainers delivering the Professional Exhibition Management (PEM) and Professional Conference Management (PCM) to the industry

and Suppliers(SACEOS) will now be adapted for the Malaysian industry and rolled out later this year.

Kenneth Fong, Chairman of the MACEOS Education Committee explains, “It has been one of our primary objectives since the new executive committee took up office in May 2014. As the voice of the industry we must take the lead in raising proficiency levels and providing affordable and credible training to ensure that standards in this country continue to rise so that we can meet the challenges

“At the moment there is nothing much in the market available in terms of professional exhibition management and professional conference management and this is the primary motivation behind this MACEOS drive. Hence it is vital for us that we can offer these credible training options to people entering into

Breathing Life into WASTE MATERIALS

Eric Ho, Director, PICO International (M) Sdn Bhd

PICO International Sdn Bhd works with MACEOS in an initiative to recycle waste materials from exhibitions and events.

FEATURE

Conventions, exhibitions and expositions have always drawn

the interest of Malaysians at large, with attractive posters, booths, stands, banners and all other imaginable ways of advertising one’s products or services. In fact, these paraphernalia are must haves and are the lifeline of these events. But what happens to them when the ‘party’ is over? Disposed, stacked up somewhere or just destroyed – a total waste of good money spent producing them.

Realising the great potential of recycling these items for the common good of society and to fuel a healthy community and environment, the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) stepped into the picture to work their magic on these discarded items. Established in 1990, MACEOS was formed with the objective of developing

and raising the standards within the MICE industry nationwide. Since then, MACEOS has grown steadily to include a membership of over 60 companies, comprising exhibition organisers, conference organisers, suppliers, freight forwarders and contractors, among others.

In line with its objectives, MACEOS has organised various initiatives to train, nurture and spur the MICE industry. However, realising the enormous quantities of waste accumulated from events, MACEOS has initiated an innovative green initiative in collaboration with a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Biji Biji. Identified as an excellent initiative to encourage corporate social responsibility (CSR) amongst MICE organisers and exhibitors, MACEOS, together with PICO International (M) Sdn Bhd, is spearheading the collection of waste

“The exhibition industry is one of the highest waste producers, therefore, we feel that it is time for us to address this issue and make a commitment towards sustainable initiatives.”

For over 12 years, HOMEDEC is regarded as the leading source of

inspiration and ideas for homeowners seeking guidance in home renovation, refurbishment and redecoration. Today, not only is HOMEDEC held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur, but also in major cities like Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. The huge demand from exhibitors and homeowners alike has led to the exhibition being staged twice a year in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

In 2015, HOMEDEC has expanded to the bustling, populous Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Surabaya.

The move marks a major step in plans to enable Malaysian companies and brands to seize the massive opportunities available in the region, particularly with the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The AEC comprises 10 Southeast Asian nations with a singular goal of transforming this vibrant region into a single market and production base to provide a competitive advantage for emerging economies. With a name synonymous with home and interior design covering all segments, HOMEDEC has become

a trusted, recognised exhibition among homeowners and design professionals alike. It is the best platform for professionals and brands to connect directly within the domestic markets, and is also an ideal gateway for foreign brands entering the vibrant AEC region.

Many Malaysian brands have credited HOMEDEC for their growth and successful market penetration. HOMEDEC is more than an exhibition, but offers a wide variety of talks featuring design experts and also business events such as forums, meetings and networking opportunities, which foster a close community with lively exchanges of ideas and opportunities.

To spur creativity and continuous improvement for the industry and thousands of their loyal exhibitors, HOMEDEC gives out a series of recognitions. One of it is the HOMEDEC Awards which was initiated to recognise outstanding homegrown designers and is now known as the REKA Awards. Another is the PAM-HOMEDEC Award for Residential Renovations, in partnership with Malaysian Institute of Architects (Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia –PAM), to recognise the works of young architects and emerging architectural firms.

Messe Frankfurt organises bigger AND BETTER AUTOMECHANIKA

Automechanika Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s leading regional trade

fair for the automotive industry targeting trade visitors from ASEAN, attracted a record number of exhibitors and visitors when it was held 19 – 21 March 2015 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. It is organised by Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and co-organised by Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) and strongly supported by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE). The additional support provided by the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB)’s promotional and related services together with various other local and overseas industry associations also contributed to the success of Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2015.

Opening the biennial show was YB Datuk Ir HJ Hamim bin Samuri, Deputy Minister of the Malaysia Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), who said: “Automechanika Kuala Lumpur provides an excellent platform to help educate and inform industry practitioners, as well as attendees about the latest in technology and public offering. The implementation of NAP 2014 last year was designed to further transform the Malaysian automotive sector as the nation’s engine for economic growth. The automotive sector is expected to contribute even more towards the national GDP with a target set at 10 percent by 2020.”

Reflecting that strength of the Malaysian automotive industry, 2015 produced the

largest Automechanika Kuala Lumpur to date and attracted 243 exhibitors from 21 countries and regions – an increase of 28 percent from 2013 – who presented their latest products and technologies in 7,465 sqm of exhibition space. Overseas exhibitors equalled 71 percent and were from the countries and regions of Brazil, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the USA. There were new exhibitors from Bulgaria, Poland and Spain.

Part of the European Pavilion, Polish automotive refinishing and vehicle waxing exhibitor Troton Sp. z o.o. was very pleased to make its debut at the show. Ms Katarzyna Najda-Bartczak, Coordinator of Foreign Markets Development said: “We’ve gotten really huge support with being a part of the EU pavilion. Visitors have been really interested in us and we have meetings all the time with clients. This has been a successful experience and we will come back in the next edition.”

First-time American exhibitor California Scents, was showcasing its automotive air fresheners and looking for a local distributor for their products. Mr Dave Slingsby, the Executive Vice President, was optimistic about the show and the market and said: “The organisation of this show was great and visitors I

met are decision makers. Kuala Lumpur is absolutely the ideal spot. Malaysia’s economy is one of the most competitive in Asia as it is growing and the currency is stable. We know the market is right for our brand. Once we find the right distributor it will grow quickly and we’re confident about it.”

Visitors numbered 5,440 with a 25 percent increase from 2013. Among the 65 visiting countries and regions, the top 10 visiting countries excluding Malaysia were: Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand.

The next edition of the show will be held in March 2017. More details about Automechanika Kuala Lumpur can be obtained by visiting www.automechanika-kl.com or by emailing [email protected].

June 2015 marks a milestone in CAC’s management of MATRADE Exhibition

& Convention Centre (MECC). It is an achievement of sorts for the centre, with a 30% increase in exhibition and events compared to previous years. The number of exhibitions organised here at the Centre since July 2014 has doubled in amount compared to previous years.

According to Nor Azmi Sulong, CEO of MECC-CAC the Centre’s excellent performance is attributed to their commitment to provide their best service to a diverse range of clients. MECC essentially caters more government base events but CAC has strived to bring in more corporate clients and in turn a larger consumer audience.

Other than the annual returning exhibitions at the centre, new events brought to MECC includes Vendeur Festival, a consumer exhibition of online lifestyle products; PERDASAMA’s Exhibition and Congress on Malay Heritage; Asia Flood

Café Malaysia exhibition saw over 8,000 visitors and holds one of the largest gathering of coffee industry players in South East Asia. PIECE2015 is a convention and exhibition for personnel and bodies involve in the management and operations of Expressways in the country.

For the coming year ahead, the Centre will leverage on the knowledge and experience gain through the year in venue management and continue their efforts to secure more shows and reach a larger consumer audience for the centre’s clients. Plans are also in place to intensify their marketing efforts to attract more events to be organised there and make their Centre known to both local and international arena.

Nestled within the 240-acre green commercial hub of Setia City

in the heart of Shah Alam, lies Setia City Convention Centre (the Centre). Modern, slick, elegant and absolutely striking in architecture and interior, the Centre has plenty to offer. After being in the market for almost 3 years since its operation in November 2012, the Centre has become a popular venue; hosting events such as weddings, corporate banquet, product launches, exhibitions and outdoor events.

The Centre has been receiving numerous enquiries on events which require a spacious venue to accommodate their guests that are growing on a yearly basis. Particularly, with the current merger of companies such as the financial industry which requires a bigger venue to house their employee’s events.

Besides the merger of companies, trending now, more people these days are joining multi-level marketing companies to supplement their income. These companies that enquire with the Centre are requesting for bigger venues for their ever expanding members.

More Space, More OpportunitiesDue to this market trends, the management of S P Setia Berhad has decided to build an extension of the Centre which will be connected via a covered walkway. The new 6000sqm² hall is a column less hall with a height of 8m to 15m and it is also divisible into 2 halls enabling organisers to create a different form of space to house their events.

The extension of the Centre is designed to be flexible, functional and facilitate free-flowing traffic to

cater to all types of MICE events. In addition to this, the car park at the Centre will increase up to 2,000 parking lots dedicated solely for event participants. Besides the parking lots at the Centre, Setia City Mall that is adjacent has additional parking lots of 2,400 for a bigger capacity event.

The brand new hall will encompass individual drop-off areas, VIP holding rooms, registration counter, organisers office for each hall and 3 meeting rooms. The hall would be able to accommodate up to 350 booths for exhibitions, 4,000 people in banquet style seating and up to 7,500 people in theatre style arrangement.

Construction is expected to commence 3rd quarter of 2015 and to be completed by the last quarter of 2016. Booking for events at the new hall will open at the last quarter of this year.

The business events industry can look forward to more space that will be available soon at the Centre in Setia Alam.
