WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?
An Apprenticeship is a way for young people and
adult learners to earn while they learn in a real job,
gaining a real qualification and a real future. Hiring
apprentices helps businesses to grow their own
talent by developing a motivated, skilled and qualified
workforce. Quality is key to Apprenticeships – NECC

apprentices and employers.
Apprenticeships deliver for businesses and help
them grow by:

workforce

- Providing financial return on investment.
More than 100,000 employers, in over 160,000
workplaces, currently use Apprenticeships to
attract new talent, re-skill existing staff and tackle
skill shortages. Apprenticeships are available
to businesses of all sizes and from all sectors in
England. Employment is a fundamental part of an
Apprenticeship. An apprentice must be employed in
a job role with a productive purpose.

Preparing young people for the world of work
TRAINEESHIPS:
What are Traineeships?
Traineeship programmes* support young people to develop skills that will enable
them to progress onto Apprenticeships or other forms of sustainable employment.
What are the aims and objectives of the programme?
Traineeships are flexible programmes designed to help address skills gaps that may
prevent young people from accessing an Apprenticeship or moving into mainstream
employment. Traineeship programmes run for a maximum of 6 months, NECC are
looking for local employers to support this initiative by offering real work experience.
There is no requirement to offer a job at the end of the programme - although that
would be a fantastic outcome! NECC will seek employment opportunities for these
young people during the course of the programme and the anticipation is that many
participants will move into our mainstream apprenticeship provision as a result of
both parties support and guidance.
What are the main elements of the programme?
Learners will focus on 3 main areas throughout the duration of their programme;
www.necc.co.uk0300 303 6322 NECC Training Prospectus 9
Work placements
The duration of work placements should be at least 6 weeks
and no more than 5 months, but exact durations will depend
on individual learner needs and the employers we work with.
Work placements will be identified before learners start the
programme.
Employers will be required to provide a reference and carry out a
mock interview at the end of the programme.
Employability Skills Training
The content of this training is flexible and should address
individual learner needs. NECC have a wide range of accredited
units and modules available for the learners to work towards
and achieve.
Our training programmes will include:
- Interpersonal skills – personal and social development
- CV writing
- Interview preparation, a mock interview and feedback
with NECC
- Job-search skills
- Vocational skills in a particular sector
English and Maths
Learners without at least a grade C in GCSE English and Maths
will be required to undertake an English and Maths qualification.
How will the programme be delivered?
Each learner will attend one day release session with NECC
on a weekly basis where we will deliver English, Maths and
Employability Skills sessions.
Learners will then attend a further 3 days’ work placement
with an employer and the employer will provide them with the
work experience required for their sector.
What is the employers’ role in this?
Employers are required to provide learners with a range of
tasks and duties that will help provide an insight to their sector.
Employers will offer support to the learners during their time
in the workplace and they will be required to pay each learner
£10 per day which will reimburse lunch and travel costs.
We would suggest the hours of work are 9am to 4.30pm.
How can employers get involved?
NECC are looking for employers to help provide real work
experience opportunities to our learners. NECC can provide
you with advice and guidance on how you can get involved.
*locations for the Traineeships Programme are subject to
employer demand.
