One year has passed since the Chamber board offered and I accepted this position
as Executive Director. There has been a lot of learning experiences in the last yearas well as some very good times. We started the fiscal year with the GolfTournament; we also experienced a couple of new events, Blues Brews and BBQand the Sage Festival as well as finishing off the year with the Membership dinner.
Along the way, we enjoyed the Black History Celebration, The Farmers
Appreciation Dinner and First Responders Banquet. Smaller events like ribbon-cuttings, business after hours and coffee & donuts with the Town of Windsor filled
in the space between events. It has been an enjoyable first twelve months.
One of the items that has been slow to get up and running is the newsletter. Alas! The newsletter is
here. The chamber has entered into an agreement with the Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA) forthis summer to help us produce the newsletter and create a template to go by that will allow us to
continue to produce a newsletter in a quarterly fashion. So we are open to any and all suggestions andcomments on this newsletter and how we can make it better to serve our members. We would like to
thank both Karen Lea Branch and Tawanda Smallwood for their hard work and time.
On May 31st and June 1st, the first Sage Festival washeld in downtown Windsor. Approximately onethousand people attended on Friday night and a fewhundred came through on Saturday. Festivalattendees enjoyed the music of the Lees (Andy,Linda, and Bud), Johnny White and the Elite Band,and Nance Joyner and Early Station. Bertie CountyRescue Squad and numerous vendors served good
food. Avoca, Inc. did a great job of telling us aboutclary sage and how it is farmed and used in
everyday products such as laundry detergent andperfumes. If you did not catch a wagon ride throughtown pulled by horses, then you missed a greatopportunity. Antiques and new farm equipment
ere on display for the on-lookers. Special thanks
to all of the volunteers who helped make thisfestival a success.

Coffee and Donutswith the Town is
an event held six times per year at theTown Hall on King Street. This informal
gathering allows communication
amongst business leaders,
government officials andcitizens. Best
of all, this event is free to thegeneral
public.
Business After-Hours is an
event held many times per year
that allows members to
socialize at the host business
location.
The Golf Tournament is an annu
fundraiser sponsored by the
Chamber. Plans are still being
made for the event this year.

July 3rd Celebration
Fantastic Fireworks sponsored by the Town of Windsor.
Our July 3rd Celebration was a little wetand soggy but that did not stop the crowdfrom coming out. With only a few vendorscancelling because of the weather therewas some great food to eat. Chef MitchellSpivey of Hammerheads and his crewdelivered with their tasty treats. GaylonPope and Sweetwater entertained thecrowd until the fireworks lit up the sky.
The Membership Dinner was held at theBertie Senior Center on June 20, 2013.
Each member of the Chamber couldinvite one person and any additionalpeople were ten dollars per person. Theentertainment was provided by one ofour newest members, Heber Coltrain ofRoanoke Outdoor Adventures. The mealwas served by the Town House. The
Kenan Institute of UNC-Chapel Hill Schoolof Business presented the program for the
evening. They are working with BertieCounty to provide a strategic plan of
economic development for our area.

Ed Lipscomb

The winner of the Citizen of the Year awardwas Ed Lipscomb of Bertie AmbulanceService. Ed and Netta Lipscomb started thecompany locally and now operate in a
number of states. Ed has been a vital part ofthe community and enjoys helping people.
His business is located at 606 S King St inWindsor, North Carolina 27983. They canbe contacted via phone at (252) 794-9141 forhours and directions. His company is also asupporter of Relay for Life. Our communitygreatly appreciates the hard work anddedication of Ed Lipscomb.
The Chamber wishes to thank Bunns BBQ for 75 years of
service! The building dates back to the mid1800s. It was
originally a doctors office and later became a Texaco fillingstation from 1900 to 1920. In 1938, it became the home ofBunns BBQ. Wilber and Grace Russell purchased the
restaurant from Bunn Weathers in 1969. Brothers Randy andRuss Russell, the present owners, are still assisted from timeto time by their mother Grace Russell. Bunns has withstood
nine different floods dating back to 1971. In the late 80s a
dining room was added to accommodate more people. Whenasked why do you keep rebuilding, Randy simply stated thatthere are not too many places to go and there are patrons intheir 70s who remember their parents bringing them to
Bunns. Bunns motto is good food, good service and goodprices. Janice Dukes and Karen Barnes have been long timeemployees at Bunns. Bunns still cooks their barbeque on
site along with their homemade coleslaw and cornbread. OnTuesdays they offer barbeque chicken and Thursdays theyhave chicken and pastry. Bunns has had travelers from all
over the world including Australia, England, Russia, India,Philippines, and Japan to help them celebrate 75 years ofservice. Stop by 127 N King Street, Windsor Monday thruSaturday for your chance to enjoy a great meal and sign theirbirthday card.

The Chamber held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
for the Dr. Thomas E. Lee Center on May 22, 2013in Colerain. The center is a part of the Greater
Wynns Grove Baptist Church. It is capable ofholding up to 350 people for any event and isequipped with a commercial kitchen. The centeralso has a fitness and wellness center and aclothing store that also offers books, CDs, DVDs,and more to inspire you to live blessed andhealthy. The Wynns of Change is a community
program designed for youth of all ages and theGolden Wynns is designed for seniors 60 years
and older. Modeling Christian love is their mostcherished value.
