Motivate• Why should they do it, other than the grade?• How do the topics help them beyond the course?
– Encourage them to make connections with their personal experiences to support learning
– Make them feel successful ….. Give them an assignment where they can self-assess their achievements
Identify a product that you had trouble using. Suggest changes to the product. In the painting industry, tape dispensers are used to tape off edges along walls and leave clean paint lines. These dispensers, however, do not dispense tape very straight because the roller has a fair degree of wobble.
Understanding the Design Process – Building bridges

Challenge their Creativity• Students need to be challenged to use their creativity to solve
something “authentic” to them.– Ask them to define a problem– Make assumptions – Determine a reasonable solution– Ask them to justify why they think their solution is reasonable or
unreasonable
The working prototype and demonstration are only 12% of the grade (combined)
The course is on design process, assignments related to steps of the design process and related reports are 80% of the grade.

Set High Expectations …. But Provide Scaffolding
•What is your expectation? •What will the students get from going through the course? • Share your expectations with them?• Give them responsibilities – not just solving problems
Expectation: Life-long LearningTeach yourself basics of CFD – choose your own software- Students are provided with CFD
basics- Students are provided with what
not to do and what to look for- They need it for their project- As a professional they will need to
learn many things on their own

Use the Power of the Class
• Encourage the students to work with each other in and out of class - but set some ground rules (if needed)
• Share good practice and bad practice - overall feedback to class
• Competitions (small/large)• Learning can be fun when in groups
