1. Unsafe Drinking Water

• Because of our love for and dependence on the water, many Filipinos are settling down on estuaries.

• Estuaries concentrate pollution may caused by waste waters from urban areas or dumping of toxic waste containing agricultural pesticides and fertilizers.

2. Loss of Economic Resources

• The economy of many coastal areas relies on the natural beauty and bounty of estuaries. When those natural resources are imperiled, so are the livelihoods of the many people who live and work along the coast.

3. Harmful Algal Bloom

• "Red tide" is a common name for events where certain algae containing reddish pigments "bloom" so that the water appears to be red.

• Effects of Algal Bloom on Human Health

Red tide in Xiamen, in China’s Fujian Province, April 21, 2007.Red tides are nutrient-fueled blooms of phytoplankton that discolor water with their pigments. Several species are known tohave toxic effects on marine life and pose a risk to human health through the consumption of exposed fish.

4. Reduction of Fisheries

• Upstream water diversions and damming (for irrigation, hydropower, flood protection, etc.) have resulted in changes in the quantity, rate, and timing of freshwater flow and the reduction of sediment and nutrient discharge into estuaries. Overall effects can range from increased coastal erosion because of reduced sediment input to reductions in commercial fishery species because of increases in estuarine salinity.

5. Loss of Habitat and Wildlife dueto Development• Wetland loss and degradation have limited

the amount of habitat available to support healthy populations of wildlife and marine organisms. The clearing of land to obtain timber, the construction of homes and roads, and other development projects completed without properly vegetating the area can lead to excessive sediments being washed into the estuarine environment.
