Challenges in Convergence
Delivering multimedia services across fixed and mobile accesses.
Augmenting multimedia services – including voice, pictures, text and video - to existing services.
Utilizing and reusing a common core and control, to the fixed, mobile and cable communities.
Preserve quality and interoperability of telecoms with the quick and innovative development of the Internet.
Mixing-and-matching equipment and applications from multiple vendors
Handle non-standardized services in a standardized way – ensuring the interoperability, access awareness, policy support, charging, security and quality of service functionality
Interworking with existing networks
Enabling users to enjoy converged multiple services regardless of access network and device (access-independent)
Enabling mobile users to access their personal set of services wherever they roam, whichever operator network they are connected to.
The Magic Potion…
IMIMSS
IMS in a Nutshell
The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) standard defines a generic architecture for offering Voice over IP and multimedia services.
International standard specified by the 3GPP/3GPP2 being embraced ETSI/TISPAN.
Supports multiple access typesGSM, WCDMA, CDMA2000, Wireline broadband access and WLAN.
For UsersEnable person-to-person and person-to-content communications – including voice, text, pictures and video.
For OperatorsDefines a horizontal architecture - service enablers and common functions can be reused for multiple applications.
Specifies interoperability and roaming, and provides bearer control, charging and security.
Well integrated with existing voice and data networks - makes IMS a key enabler for fixed-mobile convergence.
IMS in a Nutshell
Enables services to be delivered in a standardized, well-structured way.Provides a future-proof architecture
Simplifies and speeds up the service creation and provisioning process…while enabling legacy interworking.
For fixed and mobile operators there are benefits of introducing the IMS architecture today
On longer term, IMS enables a secure migration path to an all-IP architecture that will meet end-user demands for new enriched services.IMS becomes a preferred
solution for fixed and mobile operators’
multimedia business.

IMS Layers
The Application/Service layer Comprises application and content servers to execute services for the user. Generic service enablers are implemented as services in a SIP Application Server (AS).
The Control layerComprises network control servers for managing call or session set-up, modification and release. The most important – the CSCF (Call Session Control Function), also known as a SIP server.Contains a full suite of support functions - provisioning, charging and operation & management (O&M).Interworking with other operators’ networks and or other types of networks is handled by border gateways.Media Resource Function (MRF) – Control and Process Media Stream
The Access/Trasport layerComprises routers and switches, both for the backbone and the access network

The API – V2XML over HTTP
The Interactive Video Platform behaves like a browser – it issues a HTTP GET request and fetches a V2XML page
Pages can be static, or dynamic - written with standard web technologies such as cgi, asp, jsp, php etc.
Caller ID & other parameters are passed in the HTTP request – application can use it for database access, personalization etc.
