Many of you were likely impacted either with flooded basements or disrupted travel plans. On the way back, the highway traffic was very heavy and – being a North Shore boy most of my life – I decided to take the back roads I knew oh-so-well. Or so I thought... Not long after I started on my new route, I came to a police car blocking the road with a large sign “ROAD FLOODED” and directions for my detour. Not worried, I fol- lowed the signs. But before long I came to a similar scene and was once again directed in a new direction (and not the one I wanted to go in either!). Four more times this happened. I was beginning to think I was part of that old Maine joke, “You can’t get there from here!” Emergency preparedness and disaster planning is something that we hear about a lot. But beyond our immediate response to these unfortunate circum-stances comes a critical piece which we cannot ignore, and that isthe idea of business continuity. Often people confuse disasterresponse with business continuity. They are not the same, butthey are dependent on each other. Failure to plan for a “disaster”may put a business under for good. Failure to have a continuityplan for ongoing business operations during the course of a dis-aster may have the same effect. What does this mean for security professionals? Just like most ofour other jobs, it means that we must take a holistic view of ourrole in the preservation of the business. We need to think likebusiness people and act like business people. We have a disci-pline...an expertise, if you will....that is called security. But that’sall it is – a discipline. To be the most effective security profession-al you can be, understand your company’s business model.Understand how you can help them stay profitable when the daysare warm and sunny AND when the river is pouring into the basement.ASIS International has a great toolkit with guidelines and stan-dards for Business Continuity, Emergency Preparedness andmany other topics. It is rare in our industry that individuals have all three of the ASIS certifications, butChristopher J. Dorr, CPP, PSP, PCI of our Boston chapter does. We caught upwith him for a few moments to get his feedback and experiences around the educa-tional credentials.

When we asked what Chris’s primary motivation was for seeking all three heresponded “I take my job seriously, and acquiring additional knowledge and skills tohelp me do it better is very important to me. The certifications are ‘nice to have’ butto me the truly valuable thing is what they represent – and that is how criticallyimportant it is in the work I do to be curious and keep learning.”

We asked what support he received from management when pursuing this educa-tional goals and he replied “My boss is a vocal proponent for board certification and

other opportunities for training and development. The ASIS program is very highly regarded, and I have beenfortunate to have a great deal of support and encouragement as I pursued these goals.

Chris Dorr is currently Security Manager at Wyeth Biotech in Andover and is responsible for the administra-tion of the overall security program at his site. His duties include selection and deployment of electronicsecurity solutions, crisis management and emergency response, investigations, maintenance of law enforce-ment and industry peer liaison and management of guard force operations. Mr. Dorr supervises 38 on thisteam.

We extend congratulations to Chris Dorr for his most recent accomplishment of the CPP certificatio, receivedin October 2009. We praise him for his prior achievements in 2007 for the other two certifications. Chrishas been a Boston Chapter member since 2003.

John Tello, Assistant Director of Security for the PrudentialTower in Boston was our guest speaker at the March meet-ing. John's experience and special training made a greatpresentation on crisis management.

In August 2009 the Prudential Tower experienced a waterleak into the front lobby which within one hour rendered allpassenger elevators, two freight elevators and one egressstairwell unusable. Due to safety concerns the buildingbegan an evacuation procedure using the remaining stair-well which required a mastery of teamwork, good communi-cation and cooperation.

The building occupants, totaling over 3,000 were safely evacuated including many mobility impaired whorequired special assistance as the stairs posed challenges for their crutches, wheel-chairs and such.

John's re-enactment of this crisis incorporated visuals including playback feeds from the property's many sur-veillance cameras. His summary of the lessons learned will be helpful to all who attended.

ANSI Standard for Security

The following is extracted from the ASIS publication: Organizational Resilience: Security, Preparedness, andContinuity Management Systems-Requirements with Guidance for Use. It provides an excellent overview ofthe full Organizational Resilience Standard ASIS SPC.1-2009. The full document can be found on the ASISInternational web site (under the library Tab).

Organizational Resilience: Security, Preparedness, and ContinuityManagement Systems Requirements with Guidance for Use

This Standard specifies requirements for an organizational resilience (OR) management system toenable an organization to develop and implement policies, objectives, and programs taking into accountlegal requirements and other requirements to which the organization subscribes, information about sig-nificant hazards and threats that may have an impact on it (and its stakeholders’), and protection of crit -ical assets (physical, intangible, environmental, and human). This Standard applies to risks and/or theirimpacts that the organization identifies as those it can control, influence, or reduce. It does not itselfstate specific performance criteria. This Standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to:

a) Establish, implement, maintain, and improve an OR management system; b) Assure itself of its conformity with its stated OR management policy; c) Demonstrate conformity with this Standard by:

i. Making a self-determination and self-declaration; or ii. Seeking confirmation of its conformance by parties having an interest in the

organization (such as customers); or iii. Seeking confirmation of its self-declaration by a party external to the organization; or iv. Seeking certification/registration of its OR management system by an external

organization.

All the requirements in this Standard are intended to be incorporated into any type of organization’s OR man-agement system. It provides all the elements required to integrate management, technology, facilities, process-es, and people into the resilience culture, risk management, and OR management system of an organization. The extent of the application will depend on factors such as the risk tolerance and policy of the organization;the nature of its activities, products, and services; and the location where, and the conditions in which, it func-tions. This Standard provides generic requirements as a framework, applicable to all types of organizations (or partsthereof) regardless of size and nature of operation. It provides guidance for organizations to develop their ownspecific performance criteria, enabling the organization to tailor and implement an OR management systemappropriate to its needs and those of its stakeholders.

13ASIS

ANSI Standard for Security

The Standard emphasizes resilience, the adaptive capacity of an organization in a complex and changing envi-ronment, as well as protection of critical assets. Applying this Standard positions an organization to more read-ily prepare for and respond to all manner of intentional, unintentional, and/or naturally-caused disruptive events- which, if unmanaged, could escalate into an emergency, crisis, or disaster. It covers all phases of incidentmanagement before, during, and after a disruptive event.

This Standard enables an organization to: Develop a prevention, preparedness, and response/continuity/recovery policy; Establish objectives, procedures, and processes to achieve the policy commitments; Assure competency, awareness, and training; Set metrics to measure performance and demonstrate success; Take action as needed to improve performance; Demonstrate conformity of the system to the requirements of this Standard; and Establish and apply a process for continual improvement.

Annex A provides informative guidance on system planning, implementation, testing, maintenance, andimprovement.
