CHAIRMAN’S LETTERDear Donors and Friends,

It is a time of reflection for many reasons. As 2019 comes to an end, I look back fondly on the accomplishments of Johnston Health Foundation. One huge milestone for our organization is the establishment of two named endowments: the Kay S. Wallace Endowment for Cancer Patient Support and the Kenneth A. Talton Endowment for Patient Assistance. These two endowments will provide a permanent and sustaining source of annual support for the Foundation, allowing interested and concerned citizens, organizations, and businesses to direct their charitable dollars to make a long-term impact. I am grateful to M. Durwood and Vickie Stephenson and Kenneth A. Talton for their generous contributions to establish these endowments. As you will see in the pages that follow, 2019 has been the “A Year of Tributes.” We recognize that many give because it is a way to honor or remember a loved one. We made every effort to honor those fighting battles, remember ones we’ve lost, and thank those who have contributed to the success of this organization. This isn’t only the end of the 2019 calendar year, but the end of an entire decade. And my, what a decade it has been for the Foundation! Highlights include capital campaigns for the Smithfield emergency department renovations, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center, and two 3D mammography systems. All of this was

made possible thanks to a community of donors and volunteers who tirelessly work with our Board of Directors and Foundation staff to help bridge the gap to provide quality health care close to home. This also marks the end of my service as the Chairman of the Johnston Health Foundation Board of Directors. It has been a great honor and a most rewarding experience to serve as Chairman. I have made numerous new friends and strengthened relationships with old friends. The best part about serving as Chairman is seeing the fruits of our labors pay tremendous dividends. Because of the hard work of the Foundation board and staff, the health and well being of our community is improved. I am proud of the progress we’ve made and I’m excited to see what the future holds. My last request as Chairman is for your help to finish this decade strong by making a contribution for the continued enhancement of patient care at Johnston Health.

Sincerely yours,

Foundation Board

Tribute gifts are a meaningful way to memorialize a loved one, commemorate special occasions, or honor a special individual. Johnston Health Foundation expanded its tribute to provide our donors with a personal connection to our programs. Memorial bricks are laid at the SECU Hospice House Memorial Garden and Veteran’s Memorial for families to memorialize their loved ones. Families and friends are also invited to take part in the Annual Tree of Light ceremony each December, which is a moving ceremony where memorial luminaires and a special tree are lit in remembrance. A highlight of each year is the Johnston Health Foundation Annual Social event where an honoree is recognized for lifelong service to the organization, Johnston Health, and community. In 2018, we cel-ebrated Ramona Cash of Clayton, a retired school teacher, volunteer and community leader, and the life of her husband, James Cash, a former county commissioner and Foundation board member. In 2019, we honored John Hobart, the founding board chair of the Johnston Health Foundation, for his significant contributions to the community through

volunteerism with Meals on Wheels and the Central Johnston Rotary Club, just to name a few. The Champions 5K/10K and Gobble Waddle 5K/10K support participants honored loved ones who have been touched by heart disease by writing their name on the Heart Wall and/or on their participant bib, which said “I’m A Champion for…” At the 2nd Annual Portofino Derby Classic, a fundraising event for the Angel Fund, participants were invited to celebrate cancer survivors, support cancer fighters, and remember those we’ve lost by making a donation in their name. Names were creatively displayed on a wall of horseshoes during the event. Some sponsors attached a tribute to their contribution. These names were displayed on televisions throughout the event venue. We are grateful for all contributions received from the community in 2018, 80% of which were tribute gifts. This resulted in more shared tribute stories that place faces behind our causes, helping us fulfill our purpose of bridging the gap to provide quality health care close to home.
