IntroductionWelcome, and thanks for buying GRID MACHINE// CHAIN. We hope you have lots of fun and get lots of cool new re-sults from using it.

Product ContentsGRID MACHINE // CHAIN features 5 different instruments all using the GRID MACHINE // CHAIN interface. Plus you can use GRID MACHINE // CHAIN with your own sound modeules and synths, see the section of this manual called “Using External Sounds” for how to set this up.

Quick startOK, no time like the present, assuming you’ve downloaded and uninstalled everything OK, fire up Kontakt instand-alone mode and then select and load the instrument:

-[CHAIN]-[01]-.nki

..wait ‘till its loaded and press the red(pink really) key on the far right of the virtual keyboard.GRID MACHINE // CHAIN should start playing a pattern.Select another sound from the Sounds menu, or change the Octave, Tempo, Key, or Scale, anything really……So go wild, GRID MACHINE // CHAIN is really easy to play around with, careful tho’ you could loose a few hours in here pretty easily…Once you’ve had a play around try the rest of this manual for more in-depth discussion of how things work.

Starting and StoppingThere are a number of ways to control start and stop in GRID MACHINE instruments and there are two places you can use GRID MACHINE // CHAIN; in your DAW or stand-alone.

In Your DAW

GM:ControlAll GRIDMACHINE instruments feature GM Control, which you can use in your DAW to tell the instrumentwhen to start and stop. GM:Control can be accessed by clicking on the edit button and selecting the Script Editor. The first slot is labelled “GM Control” and looks like this:

Here the single drop-down menu labelled “DAW start position:” has the following options:

Bar: GRID MACHINE // CHAIN starts playing on the next bar start point, and will stop when you press the stop button in your DAW’s transport controls or when it receives the midi control note(see below).Beat: GRID MACHINE // CHAIN starts playing on the next beat and will stop when you press the stop button in your DAW’s trans-port controls or when it receives the midi control note(see below).

MIDI note: GRID MACHINE // CHAIN will respond to MIDI note C7 (note number 108). When GRID MACHINE // SLICE receives C7 it starts immediately and on the next C7 stops immediately, so in your DAW you can add a MIDI track that uses this note to stop and start GRID MACHINE // CHAINin different places in your song.

Note: Even if you select “Bar” or “Beat” above GRID MACHINE // CHAIN will still respond to MIDI note C7, so you can combine dif-ferent start stop methods.

Stand Alone

GM:ControlIn stand-alone mode Kontakt does not issue bar or beat informa-tion, so the bar and beat settings in GM:Control are ignored.MIDI Note: In the same way as in your DAW, GRID MACHINE // CHAIN will respond to MIDI note C7 (note number 108). When GRID MACHINE // CHAIN receives C7 it starts immediately and on the next C7 stops immediately.

You can send this note from any other device you have set up to interface with Kontakt, or you can manually start and stop GRID MACHINE // CHAIN with the C7 key-switch (see the key-switch section later).

There’s also the “Stop!” button which (fairly obviously) stops GRID MACHINE // CHAIN.

LayoutGRID MACHINE // CHAIN is divided into 4 areas, two control areas (on the left and right sides), the Pads (in the centre) and the FX area (at the bottom.

Left Side Controls

SoundsThere are 10 different sounds in each instrument, available in this drop-down.The sounds will change at the end of a completed sequence.

Pitch - Root NoteGRID//MACHINE CHAIN assigns notes to each pad, and does so based on the key root note you select here.

Pitch - ScaleGRID//MACHINE CHAIN assigns notes to each pad, and does so based on the scale you select here.

Pitch - OctaveGRID//MACHINE CHAIN can play petterns across 4 different octaves, select them here.

Utilities - TempoThe first drop-down manages tempo, so you cans et GM//C at x2, x1, 1/2, or 1/4 speed.

Utilities - QuantiseSets the point at which GM//C makes changesto the sounds or the tempo

LearnGRID MACHINE//CHAIN will learn each MIDI note entered and assign each note in turn to pads in order. So youcan create your own notes for each pad.

Right Side Controls

StopStops GRID MACHINE//CHAIN

Mediate VolumeDynamically reduces each pads volumebasedon the number of pads playiing

Load/Save: Loads and saves presetsPresets are in the folder “CHAIN Presets” and named MXX<name>, where XX is the machine number 01 to 05.

Flow - Limit: Sets the maximum number of times any pad will play before the sequence is restarted.

Flow- RandomSets the number a random connectoruse to see if it passes along the tirgger -1/n times on average where n is the number set here.Pads

Click on a pad to set or “un-set” a pad...

Pad ButtonsPads can have different ways of operating:

Trigger Mode: will force a pad to play(when running)and send out triggers to its neighbours.

Emphasis Mode: When played notes will have additional velocity added.

Long Mode: When played notes will be double the normal length

Random Mode: when played the pad note usedwill be a random note in the relevant keyand scale

Repeat: When played notes will repeat a number of times as defined by the Rpt menu

Link ButtonsLinks can have different ways of operating:

Normal Mode: The link will pass the triggers itreceives along in the direction(s) of the link

Mute Mode: Will pass the link along but will instruct the receiving pad NOT to play.

Filter Mode: Filters triggers according to the Filter Value

Random Mode: randomly sends triggers along according to the Random Value

FX

There are eleven FX tabs. Select a tab to see the controls for that FX. On ten of the tabs there is an on/off button, selecting this will enable or bypass this FX.

FX RoutingEQ, Filter, Distort(ion), Skrm(Skreamer) and Lo-Fi are effects assigned to each loop, GRID MACHINE // CHAIN will keep in-dependent settings for these effects for each of the 10 sounds in the instrument. The actual order in which these are applied to the sound is:Dist -> Skrm->LoFi->Filter->EQ

Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Delay and Reverb are Send Effects so their settings are common across all sounds, with the exception of the send level, which is again set independently for each sound.VPT(Volume, Pan, Tuning) are settings that are set for each soundindependently. It’s not possible to turn these on and off.

FX controlsEach FX has a set of controls to manage its configuration. On the left side of the tab are a set of sliders. Click-holding the mouse

down and sliding left-to-right will change their values.

FX ModulatorsOn the right side of the tab each FX has a single modulator table and above it a button to turn modulation on or off. The table has 32 steps and if the modulator is turned on the table values will change (modulate) the value of the named parameter.

Using External SoundsWhilst GRID MACHINE // CHAIN contains a range of sounds that demonstrate the capabilities of the instrument you may want to use an extenal sound source in your DAW with its sequencing capa-bilities, in fact we think this is one of the best ways to utilise GRID MACHINE // CHAIN.

Set up KontaktFirst you need to make sure Kontakt is sending MIDI notes on wards to your synth or sound source. Select Options from the Kon-takt menu:

This will open the Options page, select the “engine” tab:

Here you need to make sure that the option called “Send MIDI to outside world” has the “script generated notes” selected (a black toggle is present). Once this is done Kontakt will send MIDI notes onwards to your sound source.

Returning to the GRID MACHINE // CHAIN interface simply select the sound called “Ext. Sound...” from the Sound menu. This will configure GRID MACHINE // CHAIN to make no sound of its oown. OK thats it your good to go, have fun....

Key SwitchesBelow the instrument is the virtual keyboard, with keys set to different colours, these are the key-switches. When GRID MACHINE // CHAIN is running they will change settings in GRID MACHINE // CHAIN.
