Teachable Moments

Autumn. It’s the time of transition- both physical and spiritual. We see our children beginning new schools and enrichment pro-grams, the leaves are changing on the trees, and the weather gets abit nippier.

The Jewish calendar reflects these changes—as we move fromthe heart-stirring melodies of theHigh Holiday liturgy, to the physicalaspects of building a Sukkah (a tem-porary structure, often translated as a“hut”), and eating and sleeping in it,while celebrating a holiday thatreflects seasonal change.

And we are constantly reminded—change is uncomfortable. New shoesare uncomfortable. New environmentsare uncomfortable. Changing familydynamics are uncomfortable. And weall suffer just a little bit as we gothrough it. The important thing tokeep in mind is the age-old saying “Thistoo, shall pass.”

The Family Programs Department understands change, too. Asthe new Director of Family Programs, I know how it feels to be abit anxious for change to end and routine to settle in. In this issueof Chailights, you will see some new faces, and thankfully, somefamiliar ones. Our team is geared up and ready to help you sur-vive your autumnal transitions.

One of the best gifts you can offer your children, and your entirefamily, is a rhythm they can anticipate — a daily, weekly, month-ly routine. Our kids want to know-- what happened, what is yet tohappen, and where are we going? We are driven by Jewish, academic and secular calendars. How do we bring this kind of reg-ularity into our homes?

The Department of Family Programsis offering the tried and true—JewishBaby University, Move and Learnclasses (for children from 0 to 3),Bagels and Blocks for new parents,Talk n’ Tumble for veteran parentswith newborns, Warm Welcome vis-its for new babies in our community, and, of course, our premierefundraising event, Chai Chairs.

This year’s Chai Chairs BenefitConcert will be on November 7, fea-turing the fun and funky music byShira Kline and ShirLaLa…. Please

make a point to save the date, and join us to help support the pro-grams which have supported you on your Jewish parenting journey!

We are expanding our communal Sukkah, by further developingprogram offerings in the South suburbs. From move and learnclasses, to holiday celebrations, the JCC presence in the South issure to be noticed!

At Denver Jewish Day School (formerly Herzl/RMHA) our talented, dedicated teachers are an integral part of the

school experience. Our teachers don’t just pass on information. They foster a love of learning and build a stronger

community by engaging with each student. Our students describe many of their teachers, like Mrs. Otto, as “family.”

CARLA KUTNICK, originallyfrom St. Louis, met her hus-band Jay at JCC Camp Sabrawhen they were 19 years old. When they moved to Denverand became pregnant, the JCCwas one of their first stops, attending Jewish Baby University. “The JCCand Shalom Family are valuable assets to ourcommunity because they provide a one-stop shopfor meaningful and diverse programming.Anyone can find a sense of belonging here,” saidCarla. Carla and Jay now have 2 children,

Hannah (3) and Noah (7 months), and shelooks at co-chairing this event as an opportu-nity to help put a program together that is funand meaningful for other families and evokes a

feeling of connection betweenfamilies and the JCC.“Supporting Chai Chairs is anopportunity for people (includ-ing myself) to reflect on whatthey have received from ShalomBaby and Shalom Family andto show their continued supportand appreciation for thesetremendous programs.”

JAMIE RESNIK and her hus-band Andrew participated in

JBU in the fall of 2007. Through this program,Move and Learn classes and holiday events,Jamie, Andrew, Max (2 1/2) and Julia (4months), have made some of their closestfriends. “It is so important to Andrew and I thatour children have a strong Jewish foundationand a connection to our Jewish community – abig part of that is spending time and forgingmeaningful relationships with other Jewish fam-ilies.” What motivates Jamie to help plan ChaiChairs and fundraise for the Family Programs

Department are these per-sonal experiences.

DANIWYNN has been par-ticipating in the JCC FamilyPrograms Departmentsince before her childrenwere born—starting withJewish Baby University, when she was pregnantwith her daughter, Emma.Since then, Dani has takenan active role in move andlearn classes and holidaycelebrations such as

Passport to Purim. She has put her creativeleadership to work by helping to create hav-dalah and Shabbat programs, and currentlyserves on the committee todevelop programs in theSouth suburbs of Denver.

Dani embodies the mission and vision of theFamily Programs department, as she has ledthe popular Celebrate Family! Committeesince its inception. Dani, her husband, Jasonand children Emma (8) and Sam (5) have builtlifelong friendship through the FamilyPrograms Dept.

“Shalom Family is important to me because ithas created friendships, connections and Jewishexperiences for my family. I have been a part ofCelebrate Family since the beginning- when itwas called ‘Celebrate Baby’, seven years ago,”said Dani.

According to Jamie, the committee is very excit-ed for this year’s event coming off the success oflast year’s Chai Chairs benefit concert. “A familyconcert is the perfect way to fundraise for a depart-ment which provides somuch enjoyment for youngJewish families in the Denver community.”
