Southern African Women in Aviation & Aerospace Industry Girl Fly Programme in Africa 2016 Aviation & Space Camp Proposal

About Southern African Women in Aviation & Aerospace Industry (SAWIA)

Founded in 2009 and endorsed by the Civil Aviation Authority of South Africa, Southern African Women in Aviation & Aerospace Industry (SAWIA) is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) and public benefit organisation (PBO) dedicated to the empowerment of women in the aviation and aerospace industry in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Research of the demographics in the SADC region’s aviation and aerospace industries revealed a lack of equitable representation of women at every level in the sector. This gave rise to the need for an organisation such as SAWIA to provide both aspiring and established female aviators, technicians, professionals and executives with a representative body, a support structure and an easily accessible network.

By establishing a forum that creates access to more experienced industry professionals, affording aspiring aviatrix the chance to exchange ideas, network and develop relationships crucial to career success, SAWIA aspires to be the primary network for established and aspiring female aviation professionals in the SADC region.

SAWIA’s Girl Fly Programme in Africa (GFPA) is an information and skills development STEM education programme for high school learners who have an interest in the aviation and aerospace industry. The education programme is designed to expose young women (and the public) to a world of opportunities, while highlighting the achievements of women in aviation and aerospace.

Joint Aviation Awareness Programme (JAAP)

Since its inception in 2009, SAWIA has received the support of the Joint Aviation Awareness Programme (JAAP).

JAAP is a state-initiated entity that brings together aviation role players to pursue and achieve transformation of the aviation industry by ensuring that previously disadvantaged youth have access and play a part in initiatives aimed at education, awareness and career development.

Organisations that form part of JAAP are: Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), Air Traffic & Navigation Services (ATNS),

the Department of Transport, the South African Air Force, South African Airways, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), and the South African Police Services Air Wing.

Vision

To ensure aviation is a viable and accessible career choice for women. Objectives • To establish an industry-wide networking platform to connect

women in aviation and aerospace.• To mentor, educate and provide support to girls and women in

aviation and aerospace.• To facilitate access to funding for skills development.• To establish sponsorships and partnerships with strategic

stakeholders.

Strategy

Inform. Connect. Motivate. Inspire.

SAWIA Group Structure

Although the primary objective of SAWIA is the advancement of women in aviation, we acknowledge the importance of reaching and connecting women and men to ensure we work together toward a common a goal: a better aviation industry for all.

There are five divisions of SAWIA:

Our members have also been coming up with innovative ideas to give back. Of note is the ladybird

scholarship fund that was started by Amanda Kandawire. We hope that the scholarship can change

someone’s live

Thank you

To the board, thank you for your continued support to the organisation. Your contribution is

acknowledged and valued. To the donors and supporters. I would like to express my sincere e

gratitude for your continued financial support.

Lastly I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the SAWIA team for giving their time and

outstanding delivery of the programmes. To the team, I will leave you with Emerson’s quote “To

know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” ~ Ralph

1. Creating an awareness of aviation and aerospace careers.2. Shaping and developing aspirant aviatrix and future leaders

in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics spheres.

3. Encouraging an excellence work ethic, ambition, goal-setting, drive and focus in our girls.

Existing projects include:

• Aviation Camp.• Adopt-a-Pilot Day.• Soweto Aviation Day.• KZN Aviation Day.• Limpopo Aviation Day.• Youth Day.• Airshows: Rand and Virginia.

3 Strategic Pillars

1. Personal Development• Identity.• Goal-setting.• Excellence work ethic.• Life-coaching.• Career development.• Character development.

2. Leadership• Career Workshops. Throughout the year, we host a series

of career workshops that expose girls in high school to the aviation and aerospace industries, and the career paths available for them to pursue.

• Mentorship. We expose our girls to inspirational women in the aviation and aerospace sector through the annual aviation and space camp, and other projects such as Adopt-a-Pilot Day, and Youth Day celebrations such as the KZN Aviation Day.

• Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. We encourage an ethic of excellence among our girls by igniting their passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

• Airshows. We promote a passion for the aviation and aerospace sectors by arranging fun trips to the Rand and Virginia Airshows.

3. Community & FriendshipThe annual aviation and space camp, particularly, provides a platform for girls of like-mind to connect and make new friends, and through the camp they experience community-building and volunteerism in a multi-cultural environment.

Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farmworkers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another... Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa

GFPA 2016 Aviation & Space Camp

Objectives of the aviation and space camp

• To create an environment where learners from diverse backgrounds, with a common interest in aviation and aerospace, can meet and engage.

• To provide a fun, yet educational programme, giving the learners an opportunity to discover more about aviation and aerospace opportunities.

• To encourage learners to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related careers.

What sets the GFPA Aviation and Space Camp apart from other educational and development initiatives?

• We form relationships and engage with our community of girls throughout the year, not just at the aviation and space camp.

• We are active on social media platforms such as Facebook, where to-date, we have 4973 friends with whom we share career opportunities, scholarship information, available jobs, and actively live our strategy by informing, motivating, connecting and inspiring our friends to pursue their dreams and follow their passions.

• We believe in sustainable development, and have formed long-lasting relationships with our sponsors, key stakeholders and volunteers whose commitment and generosity ensures our camp is a success.

• We have built solid relationships with various businesses in the corporate sector, universities and education institutes, aviation and aersopace organisations and government departments such as: A’Dare Women Wellness Centre, AeroClub Training & Development, the Aerospace Leadership Academy (AERLA), African Pilot Magazine, Air Traffic & Navigation Services (ATNS), Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), Autopax, Campaign for Girls, Denel Dynamics, the Department of Transport, Eurocopter, ExecuJet Aviation Group (Africa), Global Load Control, Comair (Kalula.com), Konka Soul Adventures, MTN Foundation, Mango Airlines, mantaray: communication, design & marketing studio, Mashabela, National Aerospace Centre (Wits University), Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) Foundation, SANLAM, SA Express Airways, SRS Aviation, the South African National Space Agency, and the South African State Information Technology Agency (SITA).

Girls face major challenges in school, at home and in the wider society that adversely affect their experience of schooling. The rise in gender-based violence in and around schools; threats of sexual exploitation and bullying; social norms that have a negative impact on girls; harmful sociocultural practices; gender-restrictive regulations and other forms of gender discrimination – all these add to the many factors that are already known to impede the enrolment and completion of quality basic education by girls...
