The Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Industry

RAC systems are employed in many aspects of ourlifes, normally in the background.

In fact it has been calculated that 20% of the total

electricity produced in the UK is used for

    refrigeration processes.

The following is a brief overview of the main users ofRAC systems:

    The Food Industry

The largest of the RAC sectors

    Food & Drink Manufacturing

There is a heavy reliance on RAC systems both for production

processes and storage, covering the whole sphere of equipment

    types and sizes

    Retail Food & Drink

Distribution warehouses with large cold & chill storesRetail outlets ranging from hyper markets through to small

convenience stores, with food display cases ranging in charge

size of 1kg to up to 300 kg

Restaurants & Bars using cold & chill rooms to store foods displaycabinets to drink coolers

Air Conditioning systems used in the public areas to maintain ideal

conditions both for shopping & leisure

    Manufacturing Industry

    Chemical

This industry sector possesses some very complex RAC systems.

Processes include operating at below ambient temperature, removing heat from exothermic reactions, gas liquefaction and

maintaining reaction temperatures are some examples

    Electronics

Producing electronic components require very specific temperature& humidity conditions usually by large air Conditioning systems

    Engineering

Refrigeration is used in various engineering applications, such as

mould cooling, machine cooling. Generally used where theprocess temperature required cannot be obtained from water or

    forced air

    BuildingsDomestic housing

A fridge or freezer is now seen as a basic necessity and every

dwelling will have one or both. There is a growing market for RAC systems to be used to provide

heating for houses, as heat pumps are now cost effective and are

providing high enough water temperatures for human comfort.

Office air conditioningSystems adopted range from simple split systems through complex

VRF systems to large water chillers, like above heat pumps are

    becoming more popular.

    Hospitals & Universities

Are important users of RAC systems due to their size and some of

the functions they need to perform. Examples being specialist

AC for theatres equipment cooling requirements and

    environmental storage facilities

Mobile Air conditioning & Transport Refrigeration

    Vehicle Air conditioning

There is wide spread use of AC systems in cars & vans. This is

covered by The MAC Directive (EC 40/200) which places similarrestrictions to EC 842. From the 2011 refrigerants used in

vehicles will be required to have a GWP below150.

Some larger vehicles, such as coaches & trains use HFC based

system that are not explicitly covered by EC40 or EC842

    Refrigerated transport

Is in wide spread use, i.e. lorries containers, rail wagons. These all

use HFC or HCFC refrigerants again not covered by EC directive.

All these systems containing either an F gas or ODS refrigerant

have to recovered by qualified personnel
