    Ber Tpes

    As explained in detail in the ERP Systems Buyers Guide, Focus has identifed three basic Buyer Types or such solutions.

    B BaSIC BuyERS

    Basic Buyers are typically smaller companies

    (50 to 250 employees) in search o simple

    solutions that support core eatures such

    as accounting, CRM, fnance, HR, payroll

    management and basic resource planning.

    Basic Buyers tend to have limited IT resources

    and expertise and oten do not require support

    or comprehensive manuacturing operations.

    Focus believes that solutions appropriate

    or Basic Buyers must interoperate with

    incumbent CRM and HR solutions and other

    unctions that aect or are aected by ERP

    activities. Vendors o such solutions mustalso oer a hosted solution or an edition

    specifcally designed or easy installation

    and confguration, as well as integration

    and consulting services, directly or through

    partners.

    I InTERMEDIaTE BuyERS

    Intermediate Buyers are those in search

    o relatively more complex solutions with

    richer and deeper eature sets. Intermediate

    Buyers are typically ound at companies with

    approximately 250 to 1,000 employees. Such

    users tend to seek the eatures desired by

    Basic Buyers, plus additional unctionality such

    as support or compliance or perormance

    management or Web-based electronic

    storeronts. Intermediate Buyers tend to have

    some IT resources and expertise and may

    have experience with ERP solutions as well.

    Focus believes that solutions or IntermediateBuyers must support included or optional

    integration with more business applications

    than Basic Buyer solutions, such as those or

    sales and marketing automation and inventory

    management. Solutions or Intermediate

    Buyers must also support at least limited

    customer-driven customization.

    A aDvanCED BuyER S

    Advanced Buyers are most oten ound

    at larger companies (more than 1,000

    employees) and are typically in search o a

    complex solutions that add more sophistica

    unctions to those sought by Basic and

    Intermediate Buyers. Examples include asse

    partner, procurement, supplier, supply chain

    and warehouse management, business

    intelligence (BI) and tools or engineering o

    product confguration. Advanced Buyers als

    tend to have airly signifcant IT resources,

    expertise and experience. Focus believes

    that solutions or Advanced Buyers mustsupport distributed/multi-site deployments,

    consolidated management and customer-

    driven customization via APIs (application

    programming interaces) and/or an included

    SDK (sotware development kit). Vendors o

    such solutions must also have at least two

    years o experience supporting advanced

    environments.

    In addition, Microsot, Oracle, SAP, Salesorce.com and other leading

    CRM and ERP vendors are likely to introduce new oerings, options

    and alliances as more ERP unctionality becomes available via SaaS

    and cloud-based delivery. Focus believes this trend will accelerate and

    continue indefnitely. Users pursuing or considering ERP deployments

    should question candidates closely about their SaaS/cloud plans. They

    should then compare those plans careully with their own business

    needs and goals.

    Several other vendors, notably Agresso, Deltek and Quicken, all

    Business Intelligence: 5 Things to Watch for in 2010

    Introduction

    BI (business intelligence) solutions will continue to multiply in 2010. Smaller, newer vendors will merge with or be

    acquired by larger sotware companies. And users will continue to try to fgure out how best to leverage BI to turn their

    organization into truly intelligent, agile and more eective businesses. Below are some specifc areas o ocus and

    recommendations intended to help those users to achieve their goals.

    Analysis

    1. BI will become more pervasive and more visible and more invisible.

    CRM, SFA and other applications ocused on sales, service and support will increasingly act as eeders into core BI

    applications and unctions. This increasing integration oers the prospect more complete and comprehensive views

    o business operations, in part by hiding BI unctions behind other applications and interaces amiliar to users.

    What you should do: Ensure that all o your current and potential solutions or CRM, SFA, help-desk management,

    contact-center management and other business-critical unctions can talk to your BI solutions and processes. Also,

    work to drive adoption o those eeder applications to as close to 100 percent as possible. This will help to ensure

    that, to paraphrase a recent U.S. president, no BI inormation is let behind.

    2. BI unctions will increasingly live in the cloud(s).

    As more collaboration, CRM and sales/marketing automation unctionality is delivered as cloud-based services, BI

    unctions will ollow suit. This should give you more options or expanding the reach and adoption o BI and relatedapplications, in many cases more aordably and with lower management overhead than possible with previous

    alternatives.

    What you should do: I youre already using cloud-based solutions or CRM, SFA or related unctions, work with

    your vendor(s) and/or reseller(s) to make sure those solutions interoperate with incumbent or planned BI solutions. I

    your organization is not yet in the cloud, educate yoursel and your colleagues about whats available; what works with

    what; and what makes the most sense given your organizations specifc needs, goals and resources.

    3. BI and business collaboration will grow closer.

    During 2010, numerous innovative collaboration-centric solutions will likely appear, built upon platorms such as

    Googles Wave, Salesorce.coms Chatter and SAPs 12 Sprints/Constellation project, now in beta testing. SAPs

    alternative is particularly interesting, given the companys long leadership in ERP and BI. Also, early reports indicate

    that SAP plans at least some integration with Google Wave, and to support real-time collaboration with inormation

    aggregated rom multiple sources, presumably including those within and outside o an organization. Given SAPs

    legacy, the company will likely enable users to employ a hybrid approach combining cloud- and premises-based

    resources. All o these emerging platorms oer the promise o enhancing real-time collaboration with real-time and

    near-real-time BI and business analytics.

    What you should do: Keep an eye on developments related to these and other such platorms. Pay specifc

    attention to how and whether the providers o your most business-critical applications adopt and/or respond to those

    developments. And make sure those responsible or those business-critical applications at your organization sign

    up or access to the emerging platorms, so your organization has as much practical inormation as possible about

    potential specifc BI-collaboration integrations.

    4. BI will gain a larger voice.

    The growing use o IP telephony creates new opportunities to gather and leverage inormation about who calls

    whom and what happens beore, during and ater each call. This inormation can be a very valuable addition to BI

    and analytics eorts but only i a companys phone system and that systems vendor, reseller and/or integrator are

    sufciently strategically ocused on the companys business needs and goals.

    What you should do: Take a strategic approach to VoIP, and make sure that your chosen and candidate solutions

    and their vendors understand your business needs and goals. You want to make absolutely sure that all relevant

    inormation about voice trafc at your organization is as accessible to your BI- and analytics-related solutions and

    eorts as is inormation about e-mail and other data.

    5. BI will continue to challenge business decision makers to take ull advantage o its benefts.

    While growing numbers o companies will achieve success with BI in 2010, many wil l fnd their eorts stymied.

    Impediments will include disjoint solutions, inconsistent integrations with other key applications and inormation

    sources, lack o complete solution adoption, lack o managerial support or some combination o these actors.

    What you should do: Stay the course and remain ocused on your business goals. Evangelize the business value

    o eective, comprehensive, enterprise-wide BI and analytics to all key constituencies at your organization, rom

    senior management to sales and support teams. Strive to ocus on solutions and vendors that support and encourage

    interoperability, ease o use and management, and eective integration. And keep at least one eye on technologicaland business developments among BI solution providers.
