1 Introduction

This manual describes how to install SAF CFIP PhoeniX series microwave radio link consisting of Indoor Units (IDUs) and Outdoor Units (ODUs).

1.1 List of Abbreviations

1.2 Safety Precautions

– Installation and service must be done by personnel having appropriate technical training and experience necessary to be aware of hazards during installation and/or service. The installation and/or service must be done under measures to minimize any danger to the involved person or any other person.

– Use the necessary safety devices when working on or around the mast. Be aware of the risk of falling objects. Consider the safety catch when hoisting the antenna and radio.

– Do not use any components (screws, nuts, etc.) other than those delivered together with the SAF Tehnika JSC microwave radio equipment or recommended by SAF Tehnika JSC.

1.2.1 Electrical Safety

– The equipment meets the requirements for class I EN 60950 (protection against electric shock).

– All external circuits are TNV-1 (as defined in EN 60950). – All equipment must be grounded before the power cable is connected. – For electrical safety the DC power supply shall have reinforced insulation to the mains

supply.

1.2.2 Microwave Radiation

– The transmitter should be switched off before disassembling the equipment to avoid microwave radiation.

There is no dangerous radiation during operation while antenna is connected to the radio part. In case radio waveguide output is open and radio transmitter is turned on, any part of your body should not be exposed to radiation in the restricted area of 20cm shown in figure 1.

2 Getting Started

2.1 Unpacking and Inventory There are two types of packages, - the box for transportation and the commercial

package. CFIP PhoeniX IDUs and ODUs are packed in commercial packages whereas commercial boxes are packed in transportation boxes.

Transportation package for two CFIP PhoeniX IDUs and ODUs contains two trading packages for IDU and two trading packages for ODU.

2.1.1 Contents of transportation package for CFIP PhoeniX link

– CFIP PhoeniX Indoor Unit, 2 pcs.; – CFIP PhoeniX Outdoor Unit, 2 pcs.; – CFIP PhoeniX ODU mounting wrench, 2 pcs.; – Documentation and software CD (optional); – Power connector for IDU, 1 pcs.; – N-type coax cable connectors, 4pcs. – Factory test report, 1 pcs. (in progress)

2.2 Required Installation Tools

2.2.1 CFIP PhoeniX IDU Installation Tools

– Power supplies and power cables, – Posidrive screwdriver PZ2 or PH2, – Necessary tools for assembling cables and connectors.

2.2.2 CFIP PhoeniX ODU Installation Tools

– ODU mounting wrench (included); – Necessary tools for assembling cables and connectors.

2.2.3 Antenna Installation Tools

– Voltmeter/multimeter with corresponding BNC adapter (not included); – Mounting bracket and necessary wrenches, nuts, screws and clamps; – Binoculars and compass for clear sight installation (not included).

2.3 Labels

2.3.1 CFIP PhoeniX Labels

The label can be found on the front side of the unit. The label contains the following information (see samples in the picture below):

- Model name. The model name example is: - CFIP-IDU-PhoeniX for CFIP PhoeniX Indoor Unit (IDU), - CFIP-13-PhoeniX for 13GHz Outdoor Unit (ODU), etc

- Product Number (S0GIPK01, S13RFK01LA): product number contains information of product version (01), in case of ODU - in which frequency band (13) and band side (L, H) the ODU operates. Letters A, B, C or D indicate specific subband.

- Unit Serial Number (3205001 00011); the serial number uniquely identifies the unit.

3 Installing CFIP PhoeniX IDU/ODU radio link

The installation of CFIP PhoeniX IDU/ODU link involves the following steps:

3.1 Initial equipment setup at the customer’s premises – Unpack all equipment;

– Prepare necessary cables; – Interconnect CFIP PhoeniX IDUs with CFIP PhoeniX ODUs using IDU-ODU coaxial

cable with N-Type connectors; – Interconnect CFIP PhoeniX ODUs with use of test suite (coaxial cable, attenuator,

waveguide-to-coaxial adaptors). Although testing suite is highly recommended, if it is not available, establish the link by turning CFIP PhoeniX ODUs of one hop against ceiling (with flanges facing upward) and set minimum Tx power available.

– Provide power to CFIP PhoeniX IDU using appropriate power supply – 48VDC, at least 80W of load power. Plus polarity should be grounded.

3.2 Connecting to management interfaces

3.3.1. Web GUI

• The connected laptop should have an IP address from the same subnet as manageable CFIP units in order to monitor them with your laptop. Therefore set your laptop Ethernet port settings as follows: (in ‘Microsoft Windows’ go to Control panel Network Connections Local Area Connection Properties Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties):

– IP address 192.168.205.1;

(!) Do NOT remove protective sticker on circular flange specifically for CFIP PhoeniX 24GHz ODU. For other frequency bands sticker must be removed.

– netmask 255.255.255.0; – everything else is blank.

• CFIP PhoeniX requires power source with the minimum of 80W to connect the laptop to the CFIP PhoeniX. Dedicated power supply can be purchased from SAF Tehnika JSC as optional accessory. Plus polarity should be grounded.

• Default IP address is 192.168.205.10, thus IP address of one IDU should be changed. • Connect to CFIP PhoeniX by entering IP address in the browser address line.

It is recommended to use the following or later versions of web-browsers: – IE v. 6.0 (SVG plugin must be installed) – Mozilla Firefox v. 2.0.0.11 – Safari v. 3.0 – Opera v. 9.50

3.3.2. Serial connection

Use serial cable with DB9 connector to connect ASCII console to interface termination device, using ‘Hyper Terminal’ or similar application with the following settings: - Bits per second: 19200; - Data bits: 8; - Parity: None; - Stop bits: 1; - Flow control: None; use Ethernet patch cable to connect Web GUI or Telnet terminal to Ethernet management port;

3.4. Initial configuration

3.4.1. Initial configuration with Web GUI

STEP 1 To start basic configuration process, you must proceed with the configuration wizard.

• Go to ‘Configuration Configuration wizard’; • Enter system name (CFIP PhoeniX identification name), change password for ‘admin’ account and

specify password for ‘guest’ account. By default, the password for ‘admin’ account is ‘changeme’ and there is no password specified for ‘guest’ account;

• Press ‘Next step >>’. STEP 2

• Enter IP address, IP mask and default gateway. Please note that IP address of one IDU should be changed since both IDUs have the same default IP address.

• Press ‘Next step >>’.

STEP 3 • Enter preferable bandwidth, modulation type, number of E1 channels; • Enter preferable Tx power and Tx frequency;

• Press ‘Next step >>’.

(!) Default username for Web, Telnet and FTP access is admin and password is changeme.

(!) In the table below please see interdependence between antenna used and allowed Tx output power range (EIRP ≤ 20 dBm) specifically for CFIP PhoeniX 24GHz. This does not relate to other frequency bands.

STEP 4 • Check the settings; • Press ‘Execute configuration’ to confirm your choice.

STEP 5

• Repeat STEP 1-4 for the second CFIP PhoeniX; • Go to ‘Status’ screen to check link operation.

If everything is connected correct, you will see a screen as in Figure 4 (without alarm indications):

3.4.2. Initial configuration with command prompt

Command prompt is available using serial connection (DB9) or Ethernet management port – using Telnet or command prompt in Web interface – for further details see the “CFIP PhoeniX Series TDM/IP Split Mount System Technical Description and Configuration Guide”.

Configuration steps using command prompt are the following:

(!) Note that CFIP PhoeniX 24GHz utilizes both polarizations, and radios must be installed with 90 degrees offset regarding remote side. This, as well as position of cables can be verified in Main status Tx polarization row.

• Check the system settings with command ‘status’ • Configuration required parameters:

– Tx power with the command ‘radio txpower [<power dBm>]’; – Tx frequency with the command ‘radio freq [<freq KHz>]’; – Channel bandwidth and modulation type with the command ‘modem set <bandwidth>

<modulation min> <modulation max> {StrongFEC|WeakFEC}’;

– Name of the CFIP PhoeniX with the command ‘system name <name>’. Default name is ‘SAF’;

– IP address with the command ‘net ip addr <addr>’; – IP mask with the command ‘net ip mask <mask>’; – IP default gateway with the command ‘net ip gw <gw>’.

• Save settings with the command ‘cfg write’; • Check the settings made, modem and radio status with the commands ‘status’, ‘modem status’

and ‘radio status’ respectively. CFIP PhoeniX ODU and antenna mechanical installation is discussed in chapter 4.

4 CFIP PhoeniX ODU and Antenna Installation

4.1 Polarization Considerations The position of the CFIP PhoeniX ODU determines the polarization of the radio signal. The

waveguide flange can be used as the indicator, see picture in the next chapter. When attaching CFIP PhoeniX ODU to the antenna, the antenna waveguide transition

polarization must match with the CFIP PhoeniX ODU polarization.

(!) Polarizations must meet as perfect as possible at both ends of the link, otherwise you will be experiencing low RSL value.

In case of CFIP PhoeniX 24GHz ODU the polarizations at both ends of the link must be opposite.

(!) Before you set above mentioned parameters, you must know what frequency and bandwidth you may use and at what power you may transmit.

4.2 Attaching CFIP PhoeniX Outdoor Unit to Antenna

Fig. 5(1). You need only one tool to attach CFIP PhoeniX ODU to the antenna.

Fig. 5(2). Check antenna polarization and match it with CFIP PhoeniX ODU polarization.

Note, that antenna feed sticker must be removed before use.

Fig. 5(4). Use two guidance pins or 4 side lockings to choose preferable way of attachment. Lockings should be tightened diagonally in sequence as shown.

Fig. 5(5, 6). Attaching tool allows tightening lockings in two different ways. Twist the tool clockwise.

(!) Mounting locks may differ from the ones shown in the image.

(!) CFIP PhoeniX 24GHz ODU utilizes both polarizations, and radios must be installed with 90 degrees polarization offset regarding each other. This, as well as position of cables, can be verified in Main status Tx polarization row.

Other frequency bands use same polarization for both ends of the link.

4.3 Grounding the Outdoor Unit Attach the site ground to the CFIP PhoeniX ODU using the grounding screw provided on

the CFIP PhoeniX ODU housing, the location of the grounding screw is depicted in Figure 7.

4.4 Antenna Alignment

4.4.1 Calculating Expected Received Signal Level (RSL)

The expected RSL (receive signal level) can be calculated using “path calculator” provided by SAF Tehnika JSC.

4.4.2 Alignment Procedure

The antenna alignment procedure can be made easier by placing one person at each antenna location during alignment process. However, alignment should be performed on one antenna at a time, each person alternatively turns antenna until the RSL is optimized.

The following steps are required to properly align the antennas: 1. Start at one end of the link, connect a voltmeter to the RSSI port on the CFIP PhoeniX

ODU. Ensure the voltmeter is set to DC voltage and set on a range 0 – 2 volts. 2. Loosen the antenna hardware that is used for securing the antenna movement in the

azimuth directions. 3. Roughly aim the antenna directing the main lobe to the far-end antenna. 4. Slowly sweep the antenna while observing the readings on the voltmeter. The higher

is the voltage, the higher is the RSL. 5. Secure the azimuth adjustment hardware once main lobe is found and the highest

signal level is achieved. 6. Loosen the antenna hardware that is used for securing the antenna movement in the

elevation direction. Slowly sweep the antenna while observing the voltmeter. Once the signal is peaked, the elevation adjustment hardware can be secured.

7. Perform steps 1 through 6 on the opposite end of the link until the signal level is peaked for both azimuth and elevation.

After the AGC voltages have been peaked on both ends of the link, observe the RSL indicated in Web management window. Ensure that the RSL is within +/- 5dB of calculated RSL.

4.4.3 RSSI Readings

To aid in the antenna alignment process, the following chart and table shows typical relationship of the RSL (Rx level) vs. RSSI port output voltage (RSSI – Received Signal Strength Indicator). The evaluated Rx level has the error +/-2 dBm.
