HAWTHORNE CAT® located in Rancho Bernardo just recently completed a Caterpillar Certified Powertrain Rebuild on one of Otay Landfill’s 836H landfill compactors. The project was awarded with rigid time constraints resulting in several personnel from various shops involved simultaneously throughout the project. Although Caterpillar offers several types of rebuild choices, the Certified Powertrain was chosen for the harsh operating environment of landfill operations.

Restoring the powertrain to like-new performance consists of dismantling the machine and performing a detailed inspection of each component prior to the replacement of approximately 3,000 parts throughout the machine from cooling systems, engine, transmission, final drives and axles. While in the assembly phase, each component received critical engineering updates to keep this powertrain more in line with current production. Each major component prior to installation underwent dynamometer testing to ensure correct operation. The rebuild doesn’t stop at gaskets, seals and wear items. All machine electronic control modules are updated with the most current software package.

Although outside of normal Certified Powertrain Rebuild guidelines, Otay Landfill chose to replace all high pressure hydraulic hoses, reseal all steering and blade hoist cylinders and rebuild hydraulic pumps to specification.

This seven week certified rebuild project began on November 17, 2011 and ended on January 6, 2012. After a fresh coat of paiting, this unit was delivered back to the Otay Landfill with a certified 3 year, 6,000 hour warranty. Congraulations on a job well done.
