The processing of materials into functional goods forms the fundamental basis of the manufacturing industry. In view of a growing resource scarcity in an ever more connected world and the advent of digital technologies with an unparalleled impact on how products are fabricated in the future, the sustainable success of manufacturing companies ever more depends on the two factors, skilled peo-ple and innovation.

With the launch of the CAS AMaP programme, the ETH Zurich Competence Center for Mate-rials and Processes (MaP) aims at offering a novel opportunity for technical professionals to stay competitive in the job market, and at the same time, to enhance bidirectional knowledge transfer as an attempt to exploit the academic as well as industrial innovation potential.

Industry Focus: Meeting Interests and Needs of Specialist ProfessionalsIn collaboration with industry partners of ETH Zurich, we have developed a novel expert track further education targeted at profes-sionals with an engineering or natural scienc-es Master’s degree and extensive industrial experience in materials, process engineering or production technologies. The programme is fully customisable, building on the exper-

tise of the technical specialists and taking into account the interests of their employers. And also, the duration of the programme is varia-ble: on a full-time basis, the sabbatical is com-pleted over the course of minimum 2 months, or part-time during a maximum of 12 months.

Tailored Study Plan and Individual Focus AreaParticipants are offered a MaP professor as a mentor together with whom they design their own study plan along an individually-specified focus area. Depending on the individual inter-ests and needs, the study plan may consist of the following elements:

Research ProjectParticipants conduct a research project in the

mentor’s group and train their skills at the fron-

tiers of the current state of research. The the-

matic focus is aligned with the core expertise

of the mentor and can address fundamental,

development or applied problems, considering

theoretical and/or experimental aspects. In

line with the project focus, participants receive

access to latest ETH research infrastructure.

Together with the mentor, the project topic may

be chosen as such with an immediate link to the

participant’s company or might touch upon a to-

tally new area of interest.

Courses and LecturesTo deepen their technical know-how with state-

of-the-art knowledge, participants can follow an

individual course schedule put together from a

wide range of lectures, seminars and intensive

courses offered at ETH Zurich. MaP lecturers

are dedicated to innovative teaching, linking re-

search and education, as e.g. offered in practical

classes and in project-based learning following

a human-centered approach.

Knowledge TransferBuilding on their practical industry expertise,

participants are invited to share their know-how

in seminars and interactive formats, thereby sup-

porting bidirectional knowledge transfer between

industry and ETH. By contributing their senior ex-

perience in the ideation phases of research and

education projects, as, e.g. by consulting teams

in the Innovationsprojekt addressing real-life

engineering and design challenges, the industry

perspective is transferred most effectively, with

most value added.

Access to the ETH Zurich ’Materials and Processes’ Research NetworkNew materials and processes are key to every single technology used by modern society, and innovations that tackle pressing global-scale challenges ranging from health care to cy-ber-phyiscal systems, food security, energy efficiency and sustainable construction re-quire a multi-disciplinary approach involving expertise from several fields of knowledge.

At ETH Zurich, the Competence Center for Ma-terials and Processes (MaP) unifies over 70 research groups from 8 departments in this interdisciplinary area, thereby leveraging the vast and substantial expertise in materials science, engineering, processing, and man-ufacturing from the nano- and micro- to the

macro-scale level. By covering aspects from the fundamental understanding of molecular and atomic principles to the development of technical solutions, the inspirational science hub of ETH Zurich drives future innovations and creates disruptive advances for the ben-efit of society.

Within the framework of the ETH Sabbatical | CAS AMaP programme, participants are of-fered a MaP professor as a mentor to advise them on the design of the tailored study plan and act as a host for conducting the research project. The MaP office as the central coordi-nation hub of this multi-disciplinary research community, supports the programme partic-ipants in the search and selection of mentors.

Research in ’Materials and Processes’ enables key innovations for technological advances ranging from health care to energy, construction and cyber-physical systems. The MaP wordcloud highlights some of the major research as-pects studied at ETH Zurich.
