An ageless love story, captured in wood

Page 3: Century Furniture- Consulate

Century’s new Consulate Collectionreflects the power and the passion of twoof the greatest lovers of all time…Napoleon & Josephine.

Power and passion. They’re two sides ofa rare and splendid coin. When theycome together in just the right way, amazing things are born. And sometimes, the power and passion that defined anempire can traverse the ages and wendtheir way into homes some 200 yearsafter the fact.

Consulate is inspired by the furnituredesigns following the French Revolution.Broadly speaking, this was the age ofNapoleon Bonaparte, who came topower in 1790 and was finally defeatedin 1815. And, just as Josephine’s loveinspired Napoleon, the romance of theFrench Empire inspires Century’s newcollection.

This was an unusually robust period forart and furniture. The resurgence ofclassic Greek, Roman and Egyptianforms from Napoleon’s conquests. Theoverall effect was a “paring down” ofexcess. Almost militaristic in its precision, the furniture of the time nonethelessconveyed a certain “softness” with itscurved forms and opulent finishes.

It’s hard to imagine a more rich andcolorful time in history. On one handyou have a larger-than-life figure whosename has become synonymous withmilitary might and strategy. On theother, you have a man who was broughtto his knees by the woman he adored. This is an epic of almost Shakespeareanproportions.

Century classifies Consulate asNeoclassical, incorporating elements ofEmpire, Charles X, Louis XVI,Directoire and Biedermeier design.

If the history behind Consulate is atapestry of power and passion, so too arethe collection’s textures and colors.Crafted mostly in walnut, this furniturefeatures intricate veneering, carveddetails, and a mix of such contrastingmaterials as marble, cast stone, iron andleather. And the finishes—fromshimmering gold to vibrant crimson—speak volumes about the glories ofthe crown.

Emperor – The collection’s primaryfinish, Emperor is a rich, clear, burnished chestnut glowing with goldundertones.

Empress – This pale golden-brownfinish is achieved through Century’sexclusive technique for lightening thecolor of walnut veneers.

Coronation Black – This soft ebonymatte paint is rubbed away in areas toexpose hints of wood; an “old world”gold leaf highlights mouldingsand carvings.

Directoire Gold – An elegant texturedgold leaf, this finish has a worn, layeredsurface.

Regency Gold – A hand-applied goldleaf, complete with underlyingred tones.

Celadon – This pale green texturedpaint, speckled with undertones of ivory, features burnished edges and hints ofgold leaf.

Aged Celadon – Similar to Celadon yetreflects an aged and weathered lookwithout gold highlights. Available onselect pieces.

Several tables and chests featureexquisite marble tops imported fromItaly. Perhaps most stunning is FossileNero, a smoky charcoal-colored stonequarried from the ancient hills ofMorocco. It’s enhanced with the fossilsof 600-million-year-old mollusks thatwere upthrust in a cataclysmic explosionfrom the sea’s floor.

But make no mistake: this furniture isas relevant today as it was in the time ofNapoleon and Josephine. It creates asense of order and harmony, which isvery reassuring in a chaotic world. It’squite chameleon-like. It goes withanything, whether it’s a nineteenthcentury room or a very modern one. Yetthe designs in this collection are not shyor retiring in any way. They are powerful, passionate “statement pieces.” Andpower and passion never go out ofvogue…for those who make thema priority.

CARE OF FINE FINISHESFine Century finishes are resistant to minor everyday hazards;

however, some precautions are necessary to maintain the beauty

of your wood furniture:

• The signature finishes require regular dusting with a soft clean

cloth, slightly moistened with water. Dry completely with another

clean cloth, always rubbing with the grain.

• Every two to four months, apply a furniture polish made by a

reputable manufacturer. Follow package directions.

• Avoid contact with cigarettes, hot dishes, harsh solvents, such as

nail polish, alcohol, and moisture.

• Use pads beneath accessories and when writing or eating.

• Remove spills and smudges immediately.

• Do not leave pliable plastic or rubber materials on a wood surface;

they can damage the finish.

• Do not place furniture near heat outlets, windows, or

in direct sunlight.

CARE OF DECORATIVE HARDWAREThe decorative hardware on this furniture has been protected with a

clear lacquer coat. Use of harsh detergents or brass polish in an attempt

to obtain high luster will result in the removal of the protective lacquer

and will damage the finish of the hardware. Do not use harsh detergents

or brass polish.

• Use a soft, damp cloth to remove dust.

• Do not use harsh detergents or brass polish.

The Consulate Collection will maintain its beauty if treated with

reasonable care. These simple procedures will keep Century’s

Consulate Collection looking its best, year after year.
