The Centre for Professional Legal
Education (CPLE) was launched in
January 2016. The Centre brings
together legal educators, researchers
and practitioners from within and
beyond Bond Law to collaborate in
defining, engaging in and promoting
best practice in professional legal
education.
The activities of the CPLE include
supporting its members to engage in
major projects, produce scholarly
publications, and apply for funding;
publishing academic journals;
administering legal clinics; and
designing and delivering professional
legal training, professional short
courses, innovative online programs
and continuing professional
development.
The CPLE presently has three PhD
students engaged in research related
to legal education, and there were six
books, 18 journal articles and seven
book chapters published by members
in 2016.
Membership of the CPLE presently
includes 30 academic members from
within Bond Law and four members
from the legal profession.
The CPLE’s Founding Advisory Board
includes internationally renowned
legal education scholars Professor
Sally Kift (JCU), ProfessorJeff Giddings
(Griffith), Professor Caroline Strevens
(Portsmouth, UK); and industry
member Mr John Cooper (Jones Day).
The CPLE held a one day conference
during Research Week in October
2016. The first part of the conference
showcased the latest research and
professional practice regarding the
physical and psychological wellbeing
of legal practitioners, law students and
legal scholars in ‘Zen and the Art of
Law’. This was followed by a panel
focussing on legal training and
education for global practice in ‘The
Global Legal Professional’. The
successful conference concluded with
a cocktail event to formally launch the
new Centre.
In 2017 the CPLE will continue
to support its members to
produce high quality research
into professional legal
education; commence a major
research project regarding
digital disruption of legal
education; launch a third
academic journal; launch two
new clinics; and develop
innovative new programs and
short courses in technology
and legal practice, global
sports law, dispute resolution,
and legal education.
