The Sievert Gardens. Dale Sievert began his garden after buy-ing a bare, one acre lot in 1969. Every year since then he has added new gar-dens and features,

and the end does not appear in sight. The most significant change occurred in 2005 with the beginning of a Japanese-style garden after vis-iting Foxfire Gardens near Marshfield, WI. Dale grows over 50 species of moss, most on the ground, but also in over 300 containers and on over 600 rocks. Recently, the gardens have ap-peared in various books and magazines, and Dale now gives lectures on moss gardening. www.sievertgardens.blogspot.comSanger House Gardens – Steve Bialk & Angela Duckert. Sanger House Gardens were started 25 years ago. They were designed to comple-ment the home on the site built by Casper Sanger in 1872. The home is a cream-colored city brick Italianate style house located in his-toric Brewers Hill neighborhood in Milwaukee. The gardens were designed and built by Steve Bialk and Angela Duckert over the past 25 years. The gardens, along with the house, are on about 2/3 of an acre and have over 400 dif-ferent plant varieties of trees, shrubs, conifers, perennials, annuals, tropicals, and grasses. They consider themselves “texture gardeners.” Sanger House Gardens have been featured on the gardening show Great Lakes Gardener, in Fine Gardening magazine, The Milwaukee Jour-nal and many other gardening sources. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA1rRDAqjaM

Lynden Sculpture Garden. The Lynden Sculp-ture Garden offers a unique experience of art in nature through its collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures sited across 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. The Lynden Sculpture Garden is committed to promoting the enjoyment, understanding, and appre-ciation of art, sculpture, and the environment through the exhibition of art and sculpture, educational experiences, and connections

with the community. www.lyndensculpturegarden.orgGlenn & Terry Herold Private Garden. This is a young garden – established just six years ago. Since 2011, almost 900 different plants have been added. Most notable are the collections of hostas (over 170 varieties), coral bells (over 80), numerous small maples, and a prairie garden in the front yard. A petite vegetable and fruit garden supplies salad ingredients in the summer. Dwarf coni-fers throughout the garden help to enhance the numerous perennials and shrubs.Having taught horticulture at the college level for 32 years, Glenn has become a collector of plants. He developed a master plan for the almost one-acre yard prior to moving in and has followed that concept with the plantings. Trees have been planted in the back yard to form additional shade beds, and taller conifers were established in the sunny northeast cor-ner of the yard. To enhance the garden view-ing experience, all plants in the garden are labeled. Mayfield Nursery. Mayfield Nursery Inc., which originally began as an apple orchard over 40 years ago, evolved in the last four decades into the growing of perennial flowering plants for the wholesale and retail marketplace. May-field Nursery Inc. is rapidly becoming one of Wisconsin’s premier perennial growers, and in-cludes over 80 greenhouses producing more than three quarters of a million plants a year servicing independent garden centers, nurser-ies, landscapers, golf courses and municipali-ties from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Northern Illinois and west to southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa. Mayfield’s inventory includes the latest introductions to please even the most discriminating gardener, along with durable, time-proven performers that assure success for the beginner and in low-maintenance landscape applications. www.greenselectperennials.com

The Chicago Botanic Garden consists of over thirty gardens and natural areas including the dwarf conifer garden, English garden, Japa-nese garden, native plant garden, and water-fall garden. You can explore the wonders of the Garden by walking or by taking a tram. Tram tours include a panoramic overview or the intimate view of the gardens of the main island. www.chicagobotanic.org

There are many layers of design, and every detail is attended to. The Garden has followed strong master-site plans developed since the 1960s by the former firm of Environmental Planning and Design (EPD) in Pittsburgh. This has served to organize and integrate the vari-ous landscape experiences throughout the Chicago Botanic Garden. EPD also designed many of the Garden’s earliest gardens, includ-ing the Landscape Garden, Fruit & Vegetable Garden, Heritage Garden, and Waterfall Gar-den.

The Fall Bulb Festival features over 225 vari-eties of daffodils, tulips, crocus, and specialty bulbs to tempt gardeners at this annual event, presented by the Woman’s Board of the Chi-cago Horticultural Society. Buy mums, asters,

peonies, potted amaryllis, paperwhite narcis-sus, and “Bulb Boost,” too. Roving staff will be on hand to answer questions and offer tips.

The Woman’s Board is in its fourth year of “Growing the Future,” a $1 million pledge to the Garden. Proceeds from the Fall Bulb Fes-tival ensure that the Chicago Botanic Garden continues to protect biodiversity, connect people with plants, and move forward with thriving research and programs that cultivate the power of plants to sustain and enrich life.

There’s also live music, a harvest market, ci-der, wine, and beer to purchase, and the awe-some gourd mountain for selfies! More than 20 local vendors offer fresh herbs and vegeta-bles, mouthwatering jams and honeys, gour-met baked goods, and CHOCOLATE! Learn to cook with garden-fresh ingredients at the Gar-den Chef Series. Noted chefs prepare recipes in the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden’s open-air amphitheater. Seating is first-come, first-served for these free demonstrations at 1:30 and 2:30 pm.

ton. Normandale Community College’s Japa-nese Garden is a two-acre oasis on its Bloom-ington campus. The beauty and serenity of the garden make it ideal for contemplation and renewal of the spirit. More than 300 plants, shrubs, and trees have been placed here but, because of climate differences, they are not plants that would be used in gardens in Japan. The architect and gardeners chose Minnesota-hardy plants that can survive extremely cold winters. The garden does, however, exemplify the restrained use of flowering plants that is traditional in Japan. Variations in tones and textures of green predominate, and woody plant materials are trimmed or pruned to spe-cific aesthetic goals. www.normandale.edu/community/japanese-gardenTangletown Gardens Nursery. This is an oasis that is tranquil, yet intoxicating – a place of in-spiration every day of the year.
