CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY HONORS DAY 2017

About Central State University Central State University’s history begins with our parent institution Wilberforce University, named in honor of the great abolitionist William Wilberforce. Established at Tawawa Springs, Ohio in 1856, it is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church and is one of the oldest Black-administered institutions of higher education in the nation.

In 1887, the Ohio General Assembly enacted legislation that created a Combined Normal and Industrial Department at Wilberforce University. The objectives of this new state-sponsored department were to provide teacher training and vocational education, and to stabilize these programs by assuring a financial base similar to that of other state-supported institutions.

The statute establishing the Combined Normal and Industrial Department declared that the institution was “open to all applicants of good and moral character” thereby indicating no limitations as to race, color, sex, or creed. It was clear, however, that the Department and its successors were designed to serve the educational needs of African-American students.

Although this Department operated as part of Wilberforce University in most respects, a separate board of trustees was appointed to govern the state-financed operations. In 1941, the Department expanded from a two- to a four-year program, and in 1947, it legally split from Wilberforce, becoming the College of Education and Industrial Arts at Wilberforce. The name was changed in 1951 to Central State College, and in 1965, the institution achieved university status.

The University has grown steadily since its founding and has four Colleges: Education; Science and Engineering; Business; and Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Additionally, new academic programs have been added along with a new School of Agricultural Education and Food Science, a new academic building and four new residence halls. In fall 2015, the University celebrated the hub of student activity, with the opening of the new 85,000 sq. ft. University Student Center.

In July 2012, Central State welcomed its eighth president, Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond. Under this administration, six compelling priorities for the University have been established: a quality academic experience; targeted student enrollment; improved retention rates; reduced time to degree; production of graduates with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for advanced studies and careers; and efficient and effective institutional operations.

New initiatives are in progress which include aggressive efforts to increase student retention; enhancing the University’s image internally and externally through the embodiment of the tenets, Service...Protocol...Civility®; diversification of the student body through focused recruitment of local and international students; development of more fluid articulation agreements with community colleges and cooperative agreements with area universities; improved communications with students, staff, and alumni; implementation of the University’s 2014-2020 Strategic Plan; and the ongoing integration of CSU’s mission with the Land-Grant mission resulting from the University’s federal designation in February 2014.

Today, as an 1890 Land-Grant Institution, Central State University is expanding Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Agriculture (STEM-Ag) academic programming, research and education; developing partnerships within Ohio’s agricultural industry; enhancing facilities; and engaging the local communities, all for the future growth and sustainability of the University.

Central State University embraces change; but one thing that has not changed is its continuing commitment to providing an excellent, affordable education to residents of Ohio and beyond. Our future is bright!

Honors Day Convocation Honors Day is a special time to recognize full-time students who have attained high scholastic standing.

The Class Scholar award goes to the highest ranking student in each class. When more than one student shares the highest grade point average, the award is presented to the student who has earned the greatest number of quality points. The graduating senior with the highest grade point average is designated as the Senior Class Scholar.

Gold Cord Honors are awarded to graduating seniors with cumulative grade point averages of

3.50 and above, with “C” or better grades.

College Honors are awarded to students with cumulative grade point averages of 3.50 and above.

Class Honors are awarded to students with cumulative grade point averages of 3.20 to 3.49.

The Central State University Board of Trustees awards a Certificate of Congratulations to every senior graduating with a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and above.

Transfer Students are eligible for honors if they have earned at least 24 semester hours at Central State University and if their transfer credits also meet the required standards.

Central State University’s Inaugural Honors DayThe Inaugural Honors Day celebration at Central State University (then Central State College) was held on April 14, 1954, in the Galloway Auditorium. Dr. Frank Snowden of the Department of Classics at Howard University gave the keynote speech on “General Education in America.”

Four seniors received Gold Cord Honors for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.55 or above, six students received certificates of merit (College Honors) for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.55 or above, and 78 students received public recognition for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 to 3.54.

The Honors Day ceremony was followed by two special events: an illustrated lecture by Dr. Snowden on “The Negro in the Greco-Roman World” and a special honorary luncheon for students and faculty. The Honors Committee consisted of Lenora Lane, Arvella Payne, E. Oscar Woolfolk, Wilhelmina S. Robinson, and Vernell M. Oliver, Chair.

Delta Mu DeltaDr. Saima Bashir and Dr. Fred Aikens, Advisers

Delta Mu Delta was founded on November 18, 1913. Five professors from Harvard, Yale, and New York University, who believed that exceptional students in the field of business should be given recognition similar to that by Phi Beta Kappa in the field of liberal arts, founded our Society. Delta Mu Delta was incorporated in 1952 and in 1963 was admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS). In 1992, the Society established an affiliation with ACBSP whereby future chapter establishment occurs only at colleges and universities with business programs accredited by the ACBSP at the baccalaureate/graduate level.

The purpose of Delta Mu Delta is to promote higher scholarship in training for business and to recognize and reward scholastic attainment in business subjects.

Delta Mu Delta is a business honor society that recognizes and encourages the academic excellence of students at qualifying colleges and universities to create a DMD community that fosters the well-being of its individual members and the business community through life-time membership.

Lyrics by Dr. Charles H. WesleyMusic by Mrs. Annye R. Dawson ‘47

–I–O Central dear, we sing of thee,

Maker of Men who’re free. We build in deeds thy greater name,

We spread thy lasting fame.

–Chorus–O Central mine, we’ll sing of thee, Truth and Right our song shall be.

Our Alma Mater guides us and it’s great For God, For Central, For State!

–II–O Alma Mater, Hail to thee,

Builder of Women to be. We build for thee in heart and mind.

We seek thy grace divine.

–Chorus–

–III–O speak to us and we shall hear

Thy voice so near, so clear. And as we sail the future’s sea,

Through the years we’ll sing of thee.

–Chorus–
