The playground is fully equipped with wheelchair ramps and surrounded by lush ForeverLawn playground grass, but this wasn’t always the case. Prior to the new community play area, there was a small outdated playstructure that couldn’t accommodate all 300 of Glenmerry’s school children, nor was it universally accessible. With Glenmerry being the only public school in Trail, something needed to change before this small playground became obsolete. Sheryl Moon, a Glenmerry PAC member, the PAC team and the principal Patrick Audet, decided it was time to start fundraising for a new playground. This was done through several traditional school events, such as spell-a-thons, garage sales, flower sales and school lunches. Glenmerry had to think creatively about the different ways they could raise funds for a new play area. Since this was going to be the first universally accessible playground in West Kootenay, asking the community to donate seemed logical. Letters were sent out to businesses and groups in the area asking for donations in exchange for their name placed on a sponsorship plaque. It was communicated to everyone that this playground was a necessity, as it served as not only a play place for children, but an extension of the classroom. Presentations were also given to get supporters on board, this included one to the City of Trail, who became a major sponsor. Other major contributors included School District #20, Teck and Columbia Basin Trust. Once fundraising had begun, the PAC decided it was time to contact three different suppliers and ask them to send back various design ideas for the new play area. The PAC committee chose to work with Rob Ladan from Habitat Systems. “It really was a ‘no brainer’ to choose to work with Rob. AN ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND FOR EVERYONE!

If you drive by Glenmerry Elementary school in Trail, BC on any given day, you will see an array of people of all ages playing on the large Landscape Structures PlayBooster playstructure. HABITAT IS GREEN

Did you know Habitat is an eco-friendly company? Going Green with your project is easier than you think.

Together we can design a space that leaves a positive impact on the community both, socially and environmentally. Purchase a playground structure from Habitat and through our Global ReLeaf Program, we will donate trees (based on the size of your structure) to offset the carbon footprint of your structure to an area in need. Our playground manufacturer, Landscape Structures, is ISO Certifi ed – meaning they are in compliance with the ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standard. They also use a kaizen process aimed at eliminating waste known as “lean manufacturing”, which allows them to create the most environmentally-conscious playground products available.

Our Permalene panels are made up of 73% post-consumer recycled materials and our Evos and Weevos playstructures were designed to minimize the manufacturing impact on the environment on an overall level. Evos has a 30% smaller carbon footprint than traditional play structures on the market and Weevos has a 17% smaller carbon footprint. When you choose to work with Habitat, you are working with an environmentally responsible company who represents equally responsible suppliers.

Together, we all can work green, play green and live green!

Recycled Permalene panels

You have the choice to use RECYCLED panels when building your new playstructure! Available in the 11 colour combinations shown above, the distinctive black core results from combining and recycling coloured plastic household containers - waste that would otherwise end up in landfi lls. The panels offer a post-consumer recycled content of 73%. The recycled colour choices can be selected for ANY Permalene panel currently available as either a one-colour or a two-colour option.

An Accessible Playground for Everyone! continued...

Testing out the equipment was one of the most important stages of the project for the PAC committee. They took many fi eld trips with children of all ages playing on various pieces of equipment throughout the city. Taking note of the children’s reactions, the PAC committee wanted to ensure that there was something for everyone to enjoy on the new playground. People all over the community were sending in playground ideas and the PAC did their best to make sure they listened to anyone who was interested in contributing to the design.

The new playground is a complete circuit; a child can navigate the entire playground without touching the ground. It was important that the new play space be universally accessible so “wheelchair friends won’t get left behind”, to quote Glenmerry students. The new play area has plenty of room for wheelchairs to navigate and the ramps are wide enough for a wheelchair to turn 360 degrees. This ensures that children of all abilities can be included. Glenmerry also worked with an occupational therapist who pointed out the sensory benefi ts a playground can provide. This included adding play items such as the Landscape Structures spinning Gyro Twister, Bongo Reach and Ring-a-Bell panels.

The playground was installed by community volunteers and was supervised by Habitat. “The crew of volunteers were so effi cient that they built the entire playground in one day”, Moon shared. Moon also shared the benefi ts of working with Habitat on the playground project. “We appreciate the large amount of support materials Habitat provided, such as the informative Community Build Binder, which guided our whole installation process. As well as, the grant information and the 3D posters of the playground that helped the kids to envision the end goal.”
