High School Athletes Successful After Graduation

Every year, schools are faced with defending expenditures for athletics and

other activity programs – particularly in the past few years with the downward

spiral in the economy. In some cases, these programs have been seen as a

“luxury” item in the overall educational offerings of a school.

Fortunately, however, success stories continue to unfold that document the

value of these programs in the nation’s high schools. While those students

currently involved in high school activity programs generally earn better grades,

have fewer discipline problems and learn the skills of teamwork, perhaps the

most significant benefit comes years later as productive citizens in successful

careers.

High school student athletes report that good competition teaches you to focus,

set goals and develop the courage to go after your dream. Without taking that

first step or having the courage to overcome your fears it’s not really possible to

grow into the person you want to become and accomplish your goals. From

another perspective high school sports teach students how to achieve success

through hard work, and how succeeding as a team often exceeds the feeling of

accomplishment obtained by succeeding as an individual.

It is well documented that in a time of life that can be very challenging for some

individuals as they’re learning about themselves and trying so hard to fit in with

peers, high school sports provide an opportunity to be involved. These student

athletes feel like they belong with a group of people. It is from this point that a

number of personnel interactive skills evolve that help individuals learn how to

make good choices and develop strong bonds and ties for strong friendships.

These skills translate well later in life to help student athletes become good

workers who make good choices and develop good relationships at work and

beyond.

In the end, high school sports teach students that consistency, having a plan and

outworking your competition equals success. This is a place where high school

athletes use their participation as a springboard so years later they can become

productive citizens in successful careers.

Why Is Coming To School On Time So Important?

Those early morning alarm clock sounds, or a smartphone alarm, can be one of the worst sounds a sleepy student hears. But as we all should know, being on time to school each day benefits students' academic performance and future professional habits. Students who arrive at school early have an advantage over classmates who stumble through the door after class has started. When children begin to have unexcused tardiness this can mean short-term penalties and lifelong consequences. Any age of students are well advised to learn not just the advantages of showing up early, but also the pitfalls of showing up late.

Students arriving to school with time to spare have the luxury of settling in, preparing their class materials and focusing their minds on the learning to come. This also gives the time any child needs to literally wake up. Showing up on time benefits the often hard time children have in getting ready to concentrate on the day’s first lessons. Students showing up in the middle of a lesson truly miss out on this natural transition period that all teachers begin their day with. Children may lose even more of the lesson as they frantically hustle settling into an academic day. This can contribute to possible lower grades and chronic tardiness.

Coming to school after classes have begun can cause students to miss more than just an introduction to a new lesson. While waiting for the bell to ring, teachers are sharing important informal details like: reminders of upcoming assignments, class projects, reviewing classroom rules and expectations, and other school related activities. Students who show up late may miss out on these details and as a result, be unprepared for some future class event. While a teacher will likely remind them of crucial information throughout the day, latecomers may miss out on courtesy reminders. Students who show up on time everyday can rest assured they have all the necessary information to help them succeed throughout the day.

Arriving late to school on a consistent basis could have long term academic effects. If showing up late to school becomes a habit, students may develop the notion that tardiness is acceptable behavior. This belief can negatively impact their future work ethic and employment opportunities. Prospective employers are in contact with schools concerning applications attendance and tardy habits during their high school years. Alternatively, showing up on time to school everyday can help students develop the habit of being punctual with important commitments. This habit can serve all students very well in their future lives and careers.

Centerville MBI/BPA/PTA Angel Tree This holiday season the Centerville MBI and BPA chapters are hosting an angel tree for students in our Centerville community. There will be two trees, located at the school in the commons area and by the gym to choose tags from. Should you take one, we ask that all gifts be wrapped and dropped back off at the school before December 19th. The angel tree is a positive reinforcement for the community. Anything helps and will help make someone’s holiday season brighter. Any questions, please contact Ms. McDaniel or Mrs. O’Brien at the school, 736-5123.

Counselor Corner Newsroom!

This year has been a busy one already! In September the Juniors took the ASVAB Inventory Test. The scores this year were the highest I have seen in the last four years. They received their results and learned about their interests and where they would best fit in career opportunities. They too were given information regarding the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. We had two recruiters come to the school and give information on serving and the benefits related. We have a few highly interested in the military. We will continue this each year for sure and add different military branches as the opportunity arises. The Juniors were administered the PSAT test. We will get the results on those later this year. This test is a practice test for ACT which we administer but also the SAT if a student would like to take it on their own. We administer the ACT due to the colleges and universities of Montana require the ACT score. The ACT will be administered on March 24th, 2020. We have a FAFSA Night that is in the process of being rescheduled. Due to weather it was cancelled last month. The FAFSA is the federal loan applied for to cover higher educational costs. It assists with the Pell Grants which is a free grant if applicable. This is all done online and easier than a long few years ago! You truly deserved a degree just on completing those back in the day! Hee hee! That’s the good news! When a date is set, I will make sure those signed up are aware. The testing schedule is below. One test new this year is the MSA. Montana Science Assessment is replacing the CRT paper test that was administered to all 3,5,8 and 10th grades. The MSA is administered to the 3,5 and 11 but the state is asking for acceptance of 11th grade being waived as they take the ACT. This test will be given between March 16-May 8th. Smarter Balance testing for the 3-8 grades will be starting on an earlier date than the previous years. These tests cover Math and ELA subject material. These are online tests and the results will be here in the fall of the coming year. The dates for SBAC are March 9th-May 15th. Along with these tests, the colony schools (3) will be administered the WiDA testing which begins December 4th-January 29th. The tests focus on the English language learners and meeting a proficiency requirement set by the state and federal guidelines. Seniors and Juniors were able to attend the College Fair to talk to schools they may be interested in or had never heard of in person at the UP gym. This is an annual event that brings in schools from other states, different military branches and specialized schools such as culinary arts. This is a big opportunity for the students to get information and ask questions regarding campus life, sports, etc that they may be interested in. The Juniors attended the LIFE Event which is a career fair. This is the first year we were able to attend due to the date was open and not during VB divisional tournaments. The class was able to talk to people in their field, experience giving shots, being fingerprinted, virtual reality lens and many other hands on opportunities. This was a big hit for them to discuss their future and learn of what other careers are available to them. The year has been busy already and we are only one quarter in! It shall be an awesome one!!

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS…..

On October 14th we had our first Student Council meeting to introduce our new members to the Council. The new officers include Shaylyn Dilley as President, Carson McGinness as Vice President, Kim Scott as Secretary, and Teigan Brooks as Historian. We also introduced the class representatives from each class. The Freshman representative is Laynie Drew, Sophomores is Cade Hutchins, Juniors is Rylee Cavill, and Seniors is Jadon Davis. So far we have completed Red Ribbon Week through the entire school. We presented the negative effects of drugs and alcohol and every class participated in an activity to help teach about peer pressure and false advertising. The elementary students were encouraged to wear red and the best dressed winners received prizes. We are currently working on the Thanksgiving Food Drive. We will be filling 20 food baskets complete with turkey, potatoes, stuffing and canned goods collected during the week of the drive. Leftover canned goods will be donated to the Centerville Food Pantry. Finally, we welcomed a new advisor to help Mrs. McCale with the Council activities. Mrs. Iverson, our Government teacher, will be a great addition to the organization. Thank you to all new members and officers and let’s make this year great.

Happy Holidays! Wow! What a great Arts and Entertainment Auction we had! The community support was amazing. It sure takes a village and you were there to support our kids and their afterschool program. Together, with the dinner, bake sale, raffle, silent auction and live auction we raised $8,000 for our program. That is just amazing!

A big thank you to all of our donors! It really means a lot to me that everyone pulls together to help me pull off this wonderful event. So thank you!!!!

Upcoming News:

In January, we will have Muffins with Mom and in February, we will have Donuts with Dad. Dates to be determined. Again, thank you for your support!! I love this community and school!

But they soon find that home improvement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Once the walls come down, all sorts of problems start to crop up. Rotten

make Greg and his family wonder if the renovations are worth the trouble.

Centerville Booster Club would like to congratulate all of our football, volleyball and cross country athletes on an amazing season. Thank you to our cheerleaders and pep band for your enthusiasm and support at the games. It was wonderful to see the fans and parents show up in full force (in sometimes less than ideal weather conditions) to encourage and cheer on our kids.

We would like to give an extra special congratulation to our girls cross country team and Coach Garber on a 3rd place finish at state!!! We also had several of our boys receive All-Conference honors for football which is no easy task in a district as tough as ours.

Something that we are very excited about is the large number of our kids who received academic all-state awards this fall! The students must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA during the season to earn this honor. In addition to their certificate, Booster Club gave each of the following award recipients a pair of customized sport socks that they can wear with pride, as this is quite the accomplishment!
