Breaking down boundaries between classic rock and classical music, conductor and arranger Brent Havens takes to the podium to present The Music of Queen: A Rock Symphony featuring the Houston Symphony April 20. Expanding the listening experience of Queen’s ex-ceptional anthems, Havens combines Queen’s dis-tinct yet familiar sound with the new musical colors of a live symphony. Amplified with stage lighting and a full rock band, Havens and his Windborne en-semble deliver both the classics, including “Bohemi-an Rhapsody,” “We Are the Champions” and “An-other One Bites the Dust,” and the essential rarities.

“We’ve successfully merged four different groups with the orchestra and it seemed to me the next logical step in selecting a group was Queen. As always, we wanted to keep the foundation of the music as close to the originals as we could and then add additional colors to enhance what Queen had done,” said Havens. “The wonderful thing with

an orchestra is that you have an entire palette of sounds to call upon.”

This major league event features the best music from the ball-park including “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “National Game March.” To keep the baseball theme going, the program also includes Main Theme from “Batman,” referring to a person who steps up to the plate to hit a grand slam, “Across the Stars:

Attack of the Clones,” referring to the famous Houston Astrodome, “Orange Blossom Special” and “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” relating to Minute Maid Park, and Borodin’s Symphony No. 2, Finale, referring to teamwork. The “Voice of the Houston Astros” and Hall of Famer Milo Hamilton joins the symphony to narrate “Casey at the Bat.”

During the concert, a special live art performance takes place with CISD art students and OR-WALL baseball players creating a one-of-a-kind painting relating to the evening’s program. This art performance is in conjunction with BAM! (Because Art Matters!) and The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., kids are invited to join the fun at the Hats Off to Read-ing Celebration in The Pavilion’s House of Blues Hospitality Tent. Hats Off to Reading is a free event sponsored by the Reading Odyssey Committee, a community coalition that encourages students to develop a lifelong love of reading. Children can take home a free book courtesy of CISD and Scholastic Books, and participate in activities kids love such as a book walk, hat-making, face painting, fishing for prizes and a coloring contest with prizes provided by Chick-fil-A and Scholastic.

cian, capable of playing several instruments, with a particular knack for capturing the voices and mannerisms of classic characters from music, TV and movies. With a longing to perform the music of the many rock bands that inspired him, Dolyniuk as-sembled Yellow Brick Road, unquestionably Las Ve-gas’ most successful classic rock band. Since 1997, YBR has been reshaping the casino entertainment scene by bringing a rock concert atmosphere to showrooms previously reserved for Top 40-style lounge acts. In 2007, he lent his vocal talents by singing several tracks on the mega-hit video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and has already done several more for the new Konami game Rock Revolution. As a devout classic rock/Queen fan, Dolyniuk’s enthusiasm, vocal ability and on-stage energy were the perfect fit for The Music of Queen.

Houston Ballet brings Giselle, one of the most widely performed works of the Romantic era, to The Pavilion’s stage May 4. Giselle is a journey into a beautiful world of love, ghosts and mystery. Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of George P. Mitchell and The Wortham Foundation. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.

Giselle, a moving new staging by celebrated Russian ballerina Ai-Gul Gaisina and artistic director Stanton Welch, was choreographed by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli to a commis-sioned score by Adolphe Adam. The work originally premiered in Paris on June 28, 1841.

The story is about a peasant girl deceived by Count Albrecht, her transformation into a Wili (the ghosts of women betrayed on their wedding day) and her forgiveness of her errant lover which results in his salvation. This new staging by Gaisina harkens back to the Russian pro-ductions of her childhood. Before the full-length performance of Giselle with live orchestra accompaniment, enjoy a presentation of the famous lakeside scene from “Swan Lake,” one of the most beautiful passages in all of classical ballet, and the spectacular classical show-piece, “Le Corsaire” (“The Pirate”).

“I hope that the lyrical, delicate, and grave beauty of Giselle will stir the emotions of audi-ences of all ages,” said Gaisina. “If there is one story ballet that will be a benchmark for ballet lover’s knowledge, it will always be Giselle. I hope my contribution to this important piece of art will be a meaningful one.”

Welcome to the 23rd season of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Our very first performance at The Pavilion was the Houston Symphony on April 27, 1990. The following evening featured “The Chairman of the Board” Frank Sinatra performing with his orchestra. We have come a long way since 1990 and are now known as the Summer Home of the Houston Symphony and Home Away from Home of Houston Ballet.

Since our opening, almost every major touring artist has performed on The Pavilion’s stage. More than 8.8 million guests have visited The Pavilion since we opened, and we have hosted more than 1,400 events.

In 2011, The Pavilion was ranked No. 5 in the world for number of tickets sold at amphitheatres by industry publication, Pollstar.

Our 2012 season opens April 20 with the Houston Symphony performing The Music of Queen. The following day, Buzzfest 28 performs to a sold out audi-ence. This is the 28th performance of Buzzfest at The Pavilion and is the largest concert we play each year.

We have a wonderful lineup of events this year including the opening night of the Dave Matthews Band’s 2012 World Tour May 18. This will be the 19th

concert performance by the Dave Matthews Band at The Pavilion, the most by any single artist. Jimmy Buffett comes in second, having performed 18 times on The Pavilion’s stage.

Country music is back in a big way in 2012. We have announced Dierks Bentley on June 16, Rascal Flatts on July 14, Toby Keith on Sept. 8 and Jason Aldean on Oct. 26. Jason Aldean won Artist of the Year from the American Country Awards in 2011 and is nominated for Entertainer of the Year in 2012 by the Academy of Country Music.

We welcome back KSBJ this year and its presentation of the GRAMMY® Award-winning Casting Crowns May 5. And don’t miss the return of The Beach Boys with their 50th Anniversary Tour June 8.

Also, we are very pleased to present Houston Ballet’s full-length production of Giselle on May 4, accompanied by a full orchestra. This will be the largest ballet production we have presented in several years. I hope you will join us for it.

Hats Off to Reading! Celebrate reading at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for the FREE Hats Off to Reading Celebration April 25 from 5:30-6:45 p.m. in The Pavilion’s House of Blues Hospitality Tent. The event takes place prior to The Art of Baseball with the Houston Symphony.

At this FREE family literacy event, children can take home a free book, courtesy of CISD and Scholastic Book Fairs, and participate in activities kids love such as a book walk, hat-making, face painting, fishing for prizes and a coloring con-test with prizes provided by Chick-fil-A and Scholastic.

Under the white-hot baton of Michael Krajewski, the temper-ature soars as Tiempo Libre, one of the hottest young Latin bands today, performs the dance-inducing Mambo, Bolero and Cha-Cha-Cha medleys plus “Santana Suite,” “Tico Tico,” “Tu Conga Bach” and more.

Tiempo Libre, a three-time GRAMMY®-nominated group, creates a giant Cuban dance party with its infectious tropi-cal rhythms. The group’s most recent album, “My Secret Radio,” was released in 2011. It pays homage to Tiempo Li-bre’s teenage years in Cuba, features guest performances by jazz singer Rachelle Fleming, and reunites Tiempo Libre

The Pavilion Ranks Fifth in the World

According to the Jan. 16 edition of Pollstar magazine, the concert industry’s leading trade publication, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion ranked fifth in its listing of the top 100 am-phitheaters in the world based on the number of tickets sold in 2011. The Pavilion’s ticket sales totaled 277,099 for shows played between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011.

The Pavilion had eight sold-out concerts in 2011 including Arcade Fire May 4, Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefer Band May 5, Stevie Nicks Aug. 13, 94.5 The Buzz/Bud Light Weenie Roast Aug. 28, Kid Rock with Sheryl Crow Sept. 3, Maroon 5 and Train Sept. 24, Journey with For-eigner and Night Ranger Sept. 25, and Buzzfest XXVII Oct. 22.

In addition to its lineup of contemporary entertainment in 2011, The Pavilion presented its performing arts series that included nine Houston Symphony concerts, performances by Houston Ballet and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra, the 16th Annual Children’s Festival and several educational outreach programs.

My first encounter with dance was the summer

between first and second grade. School was out

for three months and in the back storage room of

the local VFW hall, a neighborhood mom set up a

makeshift dance studio, Miss Deanna’s School of

Dance. On the walls, Miss Deanna taped up pic-

tures of herself from years gone by when she was

a ballerina. We practiced for weeks in old canvas

ballet shoes, I learned the “five positions,” and our

big finale came at the end of the summer when we

held a recital for anyone who wanted to come. A

tape player started playing “Swan Lake” and out

came Miss Deanna in the most beautiful sparkling

dress that we had ever seen. She floated across the floor on the tips of her toes wear-

ing pink silk pointe shoes. We all thought she was amazing. It was the first time I ever

saw a real ballerina.

A child’s introduction to dance is a wonderful thing. This year, I hope you will bring your

children, your grandchildren, or maybe even the neighborhood kids to Houston Bal-

let’s “Giselle.” The story is not only told through dance, but is enhanced by elaborate

costumes, theatrical sets and lighting, and music played live by a symphony orchestra.

I encourage you to come early for pre-performance activities including The Pavilion

Partners Arts & Crafts booth.

This will be a memorable evening for the whole family, whether you are an avid ballet

enthusiast or someone new to the world of ballet.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

The Pavilion Partners Commits to the Arts and Community Year After Year

The Pavilion Partners recently launched its 14th year of serving as the official volunteer orga-nization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Partners members are looking forward to continuing their mission of bringing people and the arts together!

What is The Pavilion Partners? It is a dedicated group of volunteers who share a love for the performing arts. This dynamic group offers opportuni-ties to volunteer, support the fine arts and network with others who have similar interests.

How can you be involved? Partners is currently seeking interested volun-teers for The Pavilion’s 2012 season. Members of Partners can assist in a variety of areas including being event and performing arts volunteers, help-ing plan Partners fundraisers, promoting Partners scholarship program, networking or simply making a donation. JoAnne and Randy Lowry were recently honored at the Interfaith “Five Who Share” lun-cheon with the Service of Excellence Award in the area of Fine Arts.

The Lowrys have been active members of The Pavilion Partners for 11 years. They are patrons of the arts as demonstrated through their support of The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs and Partners’ Fine Arts Scholarship Program. They began volunteering at The Pavilion as ushers for symphony performances and continued as event volunteers for 10 years. JoAnne enjoys serving on the Children’s Festival Committee, an event that brings thousands of children and families to The Pavilion each year. Both JoAnne and Randy have served on planning committees for Partners’ annual Wine Dinner & Auction, Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser and “Swing for the Arts” golf tournament that raise funds for educational programming at The Pavilion as well as fine arts scholarships.

Randy, a past president of The Pavilion Partners, has served on the organization’s Board of Directors since 2004. He has served as committee co-chairman of the Wine Dinner & Auction for eight years and the Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser on five different occasions. He also is a member of The Pavilion’s Board of Directors and serves as chairman of the Trustee Committee.

Want to be part of the fun at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival and help The Pavilion Partners at the same time? The Partners organization is one of five charity partners of the

festival. By volunteering to work the fes-tival, you can choose to “donate” your hours to Partners, which in turn helps us raise money for the arts at The Pavilion.

The charity partners play an integral partin providing volunteer support for the festival, which takes place April 14 and 15 along the Waterway and in Town Green Park. Nearly 600 volunteers are needed to produce the event each year. A portion of the proceeds from the festival is donated back to each charity partner based on the hours worked by that organization.

Consider volunteering by going to www.woodlandsartsfestival.com and signing up. Just check that you want your vol-unteer hours to benefit The Pavilion Part-ners. Anyone over the age of 17 can volunteer. If you are an event volunteer with Partners, you get one event credit for each festival shift worked. However, you do not have to be a member of Part-ners to volunteer for the festival and to donate your hours back to Partners.

The Pavilion Partners is extremely proud to honor Leslie Williams as its 2012 Woman of Distinction.

Williams’ passion for volunteerism began years ago working in community relations for several volunteer programs, such as H-E-B’s Helping Heroes. She has been involved with Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement and Rebuilding Houston Together, among others. Williams enjoyed serving on the United Way Fund Distribution Committee, Native American Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Governor’s Volunteer Leadership Planning Committee.

Williams worked as a corporate liaison with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for many years before deciding to officially join Partners in 2007. Since joining, she has served consecutive years on the Partners board of directors, as well as many committees, and currently serves as chair-woman of Partners’ social committee.

Born and raised in Texas, Williams enjoys spending most of her time with her daughter, Maice. Together, they volunteer at their church café serving coffee and donuts. Thank you, Leslie, for your dedication and service to Partners and the community.

This summer, more than 100 gifted musicians from around the world are showcased with the Texas Music Festival Orchestra, a FREE summer concert extraordinaire June 22. These amazing young art-ists perform Richard Strauss’ “Death and Transfig-uration,” Op. 24, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 3.

Then ignite your patriotic spirit at the FREE Star-Spangled Salute July 3 featuring the Houston Symphony and all your patriotic favorites includ-ing Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with cannons blasting from the top of the hill. Joining the sym-phony are AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle to perform their remarkable tribute to Simon & Garfunkel. It’s Americana at its finest!
