With God, it's not an even battle! And if God is for us, who can be against us? Remember the words from Joshua 1:9, “Be strong and courageous. Center Point United Methodist Church

APRIL 2016

A youth advances slowly across the narrow fl at valley towards his opponent. On the other side stands a giant of a man bellowing insults, but David doesn't seem afraid.

The giant comes with state-of-the-art military equipment: scale body armor, helmet, and greaves to protect his legs. He carries a spear and a sword, with a javelin slung across his back. Goliath towers over the soldier who bears his shield.

The teenager, on the other hand, is clad in the simple garb of a shepherd. He carries a staff for close quarter fi ghting and a crude sling he has woven.

The boy pauses and kneels at the stony stream bed as the giant keeps up a steady barrage of foul boasts. The lad patiently examines the river rocks made smooth by the tumbling of winter rains. He is seeking stones just a bit larger than a golf ball that will fi t into his simple sling. He seems in no hurry. When he has selected fi ve, he slips them into his pouch and stands up.

The massive warrior seems insulted that his opponent is just a lad. "Come here, boy," he yells. "When I'm done with you, the vultures and the coyotes can eat what's left!" Goliath has worked himself into a rage.

But the boy is not intimidated.

"You come against me with sword and spear and javelin," he shouts, "but I come against you in the name

of Yahweh Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defi ed. Yahweh doesn't need a sword or spear to save. For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you and the entire Philistine army into our hands!"

The giant Philistine is trusting in his size, his weaponry, and his long battle experience. But David is relying on the Lord. And in that faith he begins to run towards the slow-moving giant.

When he has come within range, he stops, places a stone into his sling, and begins to swing it round and round, faster and faster. The whirring, buzzing sound increases until the boy, trained by years of practice in the sheep-fi elds, lets it fl y. The hefty stone speeds at nearly 100 miles an hour and strikes Goliath square in the forehead. Its force topples the giant who is dead before his massive body crashes to the ground.

It's easy to misunderstand this famous story. The young boy against the warrior-giant. David's puny sling vs. Goliath's state-of-the-art weaponry. The weak against the strong. But that's not the point. The sling is a lethal military weapon in skilled hands and David has practiced long hours in the sheep-fi elds to perfect his technique against the predators that threaten his fl ock.

The point is that the Giant trusts in his strength and power, while David's boldness comes from his

absolute faith in the Lord his God -- that God will help him. And so David overcomes his natural fear to face the giant because he knows that his God is bigger than the giant.

What are you facing? Have your fears have immobilized you? Do you imagine that it's you alone against your giants? Do you fear that you cannot overcome what lies before you?

Learn from David! He understood the key element: "The battle is the Lord's."

Your battles are not your own if you belong to Jesus. He will help you no matter how lopsided the odds seem to be. For this is not you against the giant. Your giant is puny compared to Almighty God. With God, it's not an even battle! And if God is for us, who can be against us?

Remember the words from Joshua 1:9, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Chrysalis Flight #46What Happens on a Chrysalis Flight?

You’ll spend three days with other people your age in

worship, prayer, fellowship, creative expression, recreation,

singing and discussion. You’ll experience the love of God

through prayers and the acts of service from a loving support

community. Think of it as three days for you to discover or

re-discover your spiritual self, to analyze and realize

who you are in Christ.

You’ll hear talks that focus on the needs of maturing

youth or young adults, offering the message of the gospel

and the friendship and example of Jesus Christ.

Each day speakers present topics with life examples,

followed by discussion, refl ection and creative expression of

how these messages can encourage your personal faith.

The point is to inspire, challenge and equip you for a closer

friendship with Christ and for Christian action

at home, church, school and community.

Chrysalis lifts up a way for you to enjoy

Christ’s friendship and love and to be

Christ’s friend and partner in the world.

Walk to EmmausThe Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program

intended to strengthen the local church through the

development of Christian disciples and leaders.

The program’s approach seriously considers the model of

Christ’s servanthood and encourages Christ’s disciples to act in

ways appropriate to being “a servant of all.”

The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72-hour

short course in Christianity, comprised of fi fteen talks

by lay and clergy on the themes of God’s grace, disciplines

of Christian discipleship, and what it

means to be the church.

The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special times

of worship and daily celebration of Holy Communion.

LOOK FOR GOD’S PROMISE TO MOVE FORWARD IN FAITH

From the Daring Faith by Rick Warren # 29

“I have banked your promises in the vault of my heart.” Ps. 119:11

When you tell God that you want to be used for His purposes, He promises you three

things that are all found in Joshua Chapter One.

God promises to give you strength, Joshua 1:5, “No one will be able to stand

against you”

God promises to give you success, Joshua 1:7-8, “You will be successful”

God promises to support you, Joshua 1:9, “I will go with you wherever

you go”

There are over seven thousand promises in the Bible for you, but you have to

discover them.

“Always remember what is written in [this book]. Study it day and night to be sure to

obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in

everything” Joshua 1:8

Seeking HIS Face Prayer MinistrySeeking His Face was birthed by the Lord to focus prayer for our nation. We are asking

the church body to pray with us. Every Sunday the bulletin will spotlight a specifi c prayer

request focused on our nation. We are asking that you include these prayers in your

personal prayer time. Thank you for lifting up our nation!

Week of April 3- Dear Lord, We pray you will help Christians to use love to encourage each other to turn back to Your Word. How else will we possibly measure right and wrong or good and evil unless we KNOW Your Word? Help us Lord.

Help us not to be silent about what Your Word says due to fear of social acceptance. Help us to have courage to teach others. Sanctify them by the truth; Your Word is truth.”

Help us not to be distracted by busyness. Help us to set aside time in Your Word regularly. Read Psalm 1:1-3

Help us not to be deceived that Your Word is too hard to understand, confusing or too old to be relevant. Your Word is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Help us not to be complacent when life in America or rural Iowa is going well. There are countries very close to ours who are no longer able to quote portions of Your Word because laws have been made while citizens were too content to care.

We know these are the enemy’s method of operation.

We pray Lord, you will open our eyes that we might behold wondrous things out of Your Law! Psalm 119:18

Week of April 10 – Dear Lord, we know that you have already won ~ we know the victor at the end of this war! It is YOU! Thank you! The enemy can only taunt us in the mean time. We ask you to give us wisdom to discern how we specifi cally should maneuver through uncertain times.

Help us to process the world today according to your measuring stick with courage and wisdom. Help us to protect religious freedom because we love You and Your Word. We are living in a country that is creating laws that do not align to Your Word.

Lord, please give us wisdom, courage and faith to know how to fi ght for our religious freedom and to live by Your Word in all that we do.

Week of April 17 - Dear Lord, help Christians refrain from talking evil and love each other! Your Word says in James 4:11-12a “Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not judge whether it applies to you. God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge.”

Your Word teaches us to Love and Forgive! In Galations 5: 14-15 Your Word says “For the whole law can be summed up

in this one command, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ But if you are always biting and devouring one another watch out! Beware of destroying one another.”

Help us to forgive each other as Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:15 “But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Jesus said in John 13:35 “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

Lord we thank you in advance, for giving us wisdom to lovingly teach Your Word, forgive each other and unify Christians in America.

Week of April 24 - Dear Lord, Jesus says in Mark 3:24 “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom can not stand.” Help us Lord to unite as a country of Christian believers! Help us to not be divided against ourselves and recognize the enemy’s schemes.

Decision American Tour.com (Franklin Graham) advice for action to restore America to one nation under God:

- Set a regular time each day or week to ask God to heal our land. - Join your state’s prayer teams. - Form a prayer group in your neighborhood and meet regularly. - Get your church involved in praying for the nation. - Ask God for wisdom on which candidates to vote for. - Pray about running for offi ce yourself (for local school board, county leadership or state/national positions). - Ask the Lord for boldness in living out your faith.

Look for how you can be involved in the May 5, 2016 National Day of Prayer with Dr. Tony Evans!

2 Chronicles 7:14 “IF my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, THEN will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Team VisionAPRIL 2016 CENTER POINT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Disciple

Team Vision has continued to work with Building God’s Way and Story Construction on the design of Phase 1 & 2 of our building. Below is a summary of our progress:

1. Team Vision received and reviewed the 90% design from Building God’s Way. We provided some additional feedback and have received our 95% design.

2. We have continued to collect information from the church family on sub-contractors who might be interested in working on our project. We anticipate meetings with subcontractors will occur the week of March 21st.

3. We also continue to collect information from the church family on skills and areas of volunteer labor that we are willing to provide to the project. These areas have included skills like painting, drywall, cleanup, manual labor, “go for”, fl ooring, sheet metal, plumbing, electrical, trimming.

4. Story Construction has identifi ed a tentative start date for our building project of May 2, 2016.

Team Vision would like to thank everyone for the subcontractors names, as well as, a willingness to volunteer your skills and gifts for God’s kingdom.

Team Vision ask that you pray for wisdom and discernment from God in our decision making and for our partners Building God’s Way and Story Construction. We also ask that you pray for our subcontractors; that they are interested in learning about our project, our ministries and the opportunity to be part of building God’s Kingdom. May the Holy Spirit be present and active during those conversations!

Mission TripAPRIL 2016 CENTER POINT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Disciple

Mission Trip 2015 to Pennsylvania, PAJune 18th - June 25th

Tucked in a valley between the Appalachian Mountains, the mining community of Johnstown, PA struggles to survive. Throughout its history, tragic fl oods have repeatedly devastated the valley, killing thousands and driving residents and employers alike to higher ground. Recent economic growth has hinted at a recovery in Johnstown, but this area faces an uphill climb. Almost 20 percent of families live below the poverty line. Many people face these circumstances without the hope of Jesus. Western Pennsylvania is fi ghting to recover.

Will you be the one to bring promise to this ravaged valley?

Are you being called? Pray about it!

We are looking for 8th graders to Adults to join us!

Cost: $720 per person with opportunities for fundraising!
