Celtic fan earrings
Suspend colorful bits of glass, crystal, or gemstone from this easy chain mail weave. The dainty ring sizes make for earrings that are neither heavy nor bulky.

editor’s note If you use dangles in multiple sizes, experiment with their placement to find the most pleasing arrangement.
designer’s tipsUse a short length of pre-made chain if desired instead of linking 2.5 mm jump rings in step 7.
If desired, add the dangles directly to the earring body with wrapped or plain loops.
stepbystep
Earring body1 On a head pin, string a 3–6 mm accent bead, and make a wrapped loop (Basics, p. 8). If you are working with top-drilled beads, as in the silver earrings with the aqua briolettes, make a set of wraps above the bead (Basics) before making the wrapped loop. Repeat to make a total of six dangles. Close all of the 4 mm jump rings (Basics), and open all of the remaining rings. Slide a 4.5 mm ring through eight 4 mm rings, and close it (1). Slide a second 4.5 mm ring through the same eight 4 mm rings, and close it. This is called doubling.
2 Slide a 4.5 mm ring through a pair of 4 mm rings from step 1, and close it. Repeat this step to make four pairs (2).
3 Position two of the pairs next to each other. Slide a 4.5 mm ring through the two inner 4 mm rings, and close it (3a). Flip your work over, slide a 4.5 mm ring through the same two inner 4 mm rings, and close it. Note how the two outer rings of the pairs are sandwiched between the two rings just added. These connected pairs will be called a set. Repeat this step with the remain-ing pairs to create a second set (3b).
4 Position the two sets next to each other. Slide a 4.5 mm ring through the two adjacent 4 mm rings in the sets, and close it (4). Flip your work over, slide a 4.5 mm ring through the same two rings, and close it.
5 On one end of your work, slide a 3 mm ring through the “eye” created by the first three overlapping 4.5 mm rings, and close it (5a). Repeat to attach five more 3 mm rings through the corresponding eyes in your work (5b).
6 Slide a 2.5 mm ring through a wrapped loop from a dangle and the first pair of 3 mm rings added in step 5. Close the ring (6). Repeat this step to add a dangle to the remaining pairs of 3 mm rings from step 5. Use two more 3 mm rings to attach a dangle on either side of the center dangle.

Assembly7 Attach five 2.5 mm rings in a 1+1 chain (7). Repeat to make a second chain.
8 Slide a 2.5 mm ring through an end 4.5 mm ring in the earring body and an end 2.5 mm ring in a chain from step 7. Close the ring. Repeat this step on the other side of the earring body (8).
9 Slide a 2.5 mm ring through an end ring in one of the chains, the wrapped loop of the remaining dangle, and the end ring in the other chain. Close the ring (9). Open the loop of an ear wire, and attach it to the 2.5 mm ring just added.
10 Make a second earring.
Colin Mahler was introduced to the joys of beading at the age of 13. She has studied metalsmithing and glass-bead making, and after teaching herself to wire wrap, she became fascinated with all things wire. She is the chain mail instructor for www.beaducation.com, which offers her classes for viewing. Colin sells finished jewelry
and kits in her online store, www.etsy.com/shop/wolfstonejewelry. Contact her at [email protected].
